Hey, if it's any help to you: while criticism of your favourite things IS a good thing, too much of a good thing can be hazardous. People are way too obsessed with criticism and cancel culture these days, and these things can ruin your enjoyment of something you love. You have to remember you can't always listen to the things random people say. It's up to you to decide what you enjoy and what you think can be better, but don't let it make you unhappy.
So this has been in my ask box awhile and I just want to say Thank You. Honestly half my enjoyment in fandom spaces comes from ignoring everyone else lol. Its difficult because I’ve been doing this since i was 13 and im 17 now, and the drama has probably had a profound effect on my mental health, but thankfully im better now. Fleeing back to Transformers has helped me take my mind off things. Sorry for rambling but thank you so much.
So it’s been a couple of months, but I don’t feel better about wof. If anything, I feel worse because fandom drama and discourse is kicking back up again on this and other sites. Some of you may know, this isn’t my main blog and its really weird that this blog has 4x the followers of my main. Call me a clout chaser, but I don’t want to lose everything here. I like other stuff than wof, and if people on instagram and twitter have to deal with everything on one account, so do you people.
I’m gonna be refurbishing my main account @miraclegemz and reblogging my art there so its all in one place. Ill make a pinned post later about the move when its finalized, but I would really appreciate a follow here and on my Insta with the same @. When I do come back to wof eventually, it will be on that blog.
Hi uh, I know I’ve been inactive recently for a number of reasons, one being finals and the other being that I’ve just not had ay creative juice for WoF for a number of reasons which I will be getting into under the cut.
TL:DR : The more critical view of wof (a good thing) has killed any creativity I have because I feel bad about it. Also in my other fandoms we have writing issues too but its more commonplace and has been known for years, plus there are multiple writers, so I guess I’m just not super used to it being forefront.
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts criticizing the writing of WoF and Tui WHICH IS GOOD. Issues and problems with the writing SHOULD be addressed. Tui has made mistakes while writing and these are not simple mistakes.
It’s these issues and a whole debacle that happened on Instagram about a zine that I ordered (and still haven’t open because of it) that just killed my motivation. Heavy schoolwork has also been a factor in my inactivity.
In my experience in other fandoms (Sonic and Transformers), there are also writing issues, (some which may be considered worse than wof). The key difference is that these are franchises with multiple writers, and are 30 and 40 years old respectively. That is a lot more time to retcon things or fire bad writers, but even that hasn’t happened. Because its more commonplace, the mentality I see is rewrite it/retcon it/ignore it and cuss out the writer. Also, there are multiple continuities/mediums, so if one absolutely sucks, it gets ignored in favor of a better one.
These are just my thoughts on it. I think the critical shift is something that needed to happen, and I’m glad it did. I’ve just never had that shift occur in my active experience in the fandom; it always happened before I joined.
I would just ignore it/rewrite it, but I’m not sure if it would do more harm, and I’m not sure if I could do better. The stuff that has happened on other platforms before this is exhausting, which has also dulled my interest. I’m not leaving the fandom, but I think I may just take an indefinite break. I’m trying to teach myself that I don't owe anyone my art, but this is the biggest platform I have (little less than 500).
Most of my other fandoms are at a lull right now, and my brain is craving the brrrrrrrr. I have a decent backlog of video games I need to finish, and I’ve been playing more minecraft, so I think i may just do that. If i do draw anything, its not gonna be wof, and it will probably go on my Instagram. If you wanna see, or see what else I’m into, my insta is the name of my main blog (In this blog’s description).
you don’t have to cancel everyone the second they misstep or do something dumb but you also DON’T have to defend everything that your fave does. you can say “hey this particular thing sucked” without getting into this all-or-nothing mentality. you are not an extension of the things you like. you can think freely and criticize the things (and people) that you like, and a criticism of something you like is not something that you should take personally or feel the need to correct/defend.
I mean to be fair that’s how I’ve always seen it. But, I have also subsiquently seen him with like abnormally large claws, like so large that they have started to curl.
Instead of wanting to kill Vigilance for the throne, Darkstalker planned to assassinate the royal chef because he wanted to be in charge of cooking for the royal family. This is based on the fact that Darkstalker took an after-school cooking class.
FYI: a MAP is the name p*dos came up with to sound more acceptable. It means ‘Minor Attracted Person.’ If you see a MAP, it’s okay to punch/castrate them
TO ALL YOUNGER PEOPLE IN THE WOF COMMUNITY THIS IS MY GOSPEL
LISTEN TO MINORITIES, ESPECIALLY BLACK, JEWISH AND NATIVE PEOPLE when they criticise the writing of these books. liking media with bigoted content does not inherently make you cruel but refusing to even acknowledge that it has flaws does. the author is not your friend and does not need you to defend them, and criticism is not only healthy but helps you develop the skills you need to detect these flaws in future content you enjoy without needing someone to inform you of it.
coming to terms with the fact that your favourite character (who you might relate to for reasons totally seperate from the bigoted parts of their character, if they are not unshakeably interlinked) is badly written is difficult and i understand but you cannot let your comfort be prioritised over the safety of the people who are negatively affected by the harmful ideas in wof
ESPECIALLY do not lash out, flame, or talk down to people who speak out about these things, PUBLICLY, i have seen this happen before and it is not only embarassing but immensely disrespectful. if their opinions confuse you nothing stops you from asking for an explanation, infact i assure you most will be happy to inform you! listen and learn
So i was thinking, instead of Dragonslayer, you know who we could have gotten a legends book on?
Queen Sequoia during the tree wars.
Here me out on this
We barely know anything about the poisonwings, and we know nothing about the Sapwings or the leafwings original culture, so i think a Queen Sequoia legends book could be kinda epic
Why are so many of the older people here such hypocrites and weirdos I fucking hate it here. Just found out one of my former Inpsos did something really shitty and I’m so fucking frustrated.
I wish I could talk with people my age in the fandom, but I don’t even know how to start. There are some people I really wanna be friends with to have some sort of positive experience because this is so exhausting.
It feels like the people my age (16-17) are the only people with sense here, and are turning things around. Grrrrrrrrr I hate being on the internet and caring about things.
