How it's Done | Wally & Calem

That was a close one… Calem smiled at the trainer and said, “Nice job, Wally.”

Hearing the question, he thought about the answer. “Well, Fury Cutter gains power every time it’s used successfully. It’s a weak move, but when used multiple times, it becomes very powerful. Next time check out the descriptions of your pokemon’s moves.”

Calem looked at the trainer’s confused stare. Oh no. He really is a newbie… “You do know how to check your pokemon’s moves right?”

Before Wally could answer, Calem opened up the menu for his team and made it visible to the trainer. “See, looking at all the descriptions for the moves gives you it’s typing, whether it’s physical, special, or a status move, and any secondary effects. It helps a lot when you’re planning out your team.”

He grinned over at the trainer. “I wouldn’t mind sticking around longer if you have anymore questions. I’m in no hurry. And I’d feel responsible if you didn’t have a proper teacher.”

Wally studied Calem’s navigation through his menus, then opened his own.

Fury cutter… pursuit… quick attack… confusion… growl…

"I didn’t know confusion could actually confuse a pokemon. I thought it was just a name!"

He finished looking through the moves, and swiped over to the stat screen. the graphs and numbers were a confusing mess in front of his eyes. Attack, special attack, level, exp. Why were there different attack stats?

"Hey Calem. What’s the difference between attack and special attack? Shouldn’t there just be one attack stat?" Wally asked.

“Think of it like this. Attack is a stat for physical attacks, like the ones that use the pokemon’s own body. Special attack is for attacks that are… long range moves. Some pokemon are more proficient in different stats. The same idea goes for defense and special defense.” Calem carefully worded his statement, hoping that he didn’t say anything that was misleading.

He chuckled, “I remember when I used to play the earlier versions of the game. I’d just fight without much thought to those stats. I’d like to think I still do sometimes here.”

Wanting to make sure that Wally got the idea, he suggested, “How about you look at your pokemon’s moves and show me which ones use the Attack stat and ones that use the Special Attack stat?”

He released his Chesnaught, much to Wally’s surprise. Smiling, he laughed joyfully, “Don’t worry. We won’t have a real battle… yet.” He winked. “Franky here is able to take quite a few hits.” Franky gave a prideful roar. “Just tell me when you’re ready.”

[Obtained the Old Rod!] - Gary & Calem

"I started out in the Kalos region. It’s pretty far from here. Took me a long time to get over here. Of course, I’m kind of just moving around right now." Looking again at the Eevee, he accessed his menu and offered it a pokepuff.

Just as he placed it on the ground near the small pokemon, he heard a small roar come from behind him. His Butterfree was chasing his Litleo, running towards both the trainers. Calem’s other two pokemon were no where in sight. Sighing, “I though I told Titanya to watch over you guys…” Calem reached down and picked up his Litleo.

She purred with delight and his Butterfree flew around his head in circles. “This little girl here is Dana, and the flying one is Chester. They’re little pranksters, but they’re a lot of fun to have around,” Calem smiled. Putting down Dana, she slowly walking over to the Eevee and watched it sniff the pokemon treat.

Looking at Gary’s rod, Calem noted, “If you want to catch anything more than just a bunch Magikarp, I think you’ll want to find a better rod.” Using the menu, he took out a Good Rod. “I’m not sure where you can find it in this region, but I got this one back in Kalos. There’s even a better one which can get you better pokemon!”

Seeing that he had his Rod out, Calem decided to use it in the river. “While swimming, I saw a Dratini… I’m not sure if I could catch it with this rod, but it would have been an awesome catch.” He let out a sigh of disappointment. Dana and Gary’s Eevee were both enjoying the pokepuff, while Franky floated around the water, eyeing the treat enviously.

Sitting at the edge of the river, Calem flicked back the rod and threw the lure into the water. Calem grinned, “So, have you got the mechanics to fishing down? Or did I interrupt your first catch?”

"Kalos… that is far.” Gary sat in silence for a minute, wondering how Calem had wound up here in the first place - and why? Unless he had already defeated the Champion, he couldn’t imagine why he’d be here? Whatever the case may be, his thought process was quickly interrupted by the arrival of his two Pokemon.

"What Pokemon is that?" He asked, spotting the Litleo. He definitely recognized the Butterfree, but he’d never seen any Pokemon from the Kalos region.

Suddenly aware of how much like a noob he was coming across, Gary remember that he had a PokeDex that was designed for the sole purpose of tracking unknown Pokemon. But.. “Huh… will my PokeDex work on foreign Pokemon, though?”

And just as he expected, Gary aimed the device’s scanner right in front of Dana only to get an, “Unable to detect foreign Pokemon,” alert on his screen. “Great.”

Shifting his attention back over to the fishing rod, he nodded. “Sorta, but it’s cool. I already knew how to use a fishing rod. I was just hoping I’d find something a bit cooler than a Goldeen, though.”

Heaving a small sigh, Gary thought back to what Calem had just said about the Dratini, finally processing his words. “Wait, you saw a Dratini around here? Where??”

Looking at the trainer, he too sighed. "It was down the river over where I came from. It's a pretty rare pokemon, especially for these parts. It's long gone by now."

The lure caught onto something and he pulled, revealing a level 10 Magikarp. Dana, who was near Calem, growled, ready for a battle. Calem laughed and released the pokemon.

"Kalos is pretty far. It's a pretty area. Lots of flowers. Once you get the HM Fly, I recommend you travel over there. Soon, I plan to go back to beat the Gym Leaders. I'm on my 6th Badge." He grinned, revealing his trainer card.

"You're from Kanto, right? I like it here. It has a very... rural feel to it. Like the country side of Aizu..." Calem stared off into the distance as he began to recall his life outside the game. Another pull of the lure brought him back. He pulled it out and got another Magikarp.

He sighed, "And I thought this rod was better. I should find the Super Rod." Seeing Gary petting his Eevee, he said, "How far are you into beating this region?"

"Hey, would you mind sticking around for a battle or two? Just to make sure I do it right," Wally said. Calem looked over at him and grinned, "No problem. I’ve got some time on my hands."

Watching Wally as he moved through the grass with his Kirlia, he saw the Poochyena pop out. Oh crap… Just as he was about to yell out, Wally issued out the command, “Kirlia, use confusion!”

Calem saw the attack move towards the dog pokemon, and saw that nothing happened. Looking at Wally’s confused but determined face, Calem winced when he repeated his command. Again, it had no effect and Wally’s face look panicked.

Quickly, Calem said, “Wally, Poochyena are Dark-type pokemon. Psychic moves have no effect on them. Does Kirlia know any other types of moves other than Psychic-types?”

Damn it… I forgot to tell him that some pokemon are immune to certain moves depending on their types… Calem inwardly cursed himself at being such an awful teacher.

Seeing the Poochyena preparing for another attack, Calem exclaimed, “If you have another pokemon that isn’t Psychic or Ghost, send it out before it uses a dark type move!”

Wally, hearing Calem’s command took a deep breath to calm down, then fumbled with his menus to get to his party. In the time it took him to get to where Grovyle was, the poochyena had bitten Kirlia. He recalled her from the battlefield with a cry, and grovyle took her place.

"Grovyle, use fury cutter!" he yelled.

The poochyena was knocked back, but barely flinched at the new assault, quickly launching himself into a tackle. He was given hope by how much damage grovyle had dealt and how little he had taken.

"Grovyle, use fury cutter again! We’ve almost got this!" Wally cried.

Grovyle dodged a blow from poochyena, then leapt and spun, delivering a slash that sent the pokemon flying away, and bursting into shards.

"Good job Grovyle! You did it!"

Wally danced around in joy with his pokemon before recalling him. He turned to Calem with a slightly perplexed look on his face.

"Hey Calem, my first attack didn’t do nearly as much damage as the first one. Shouldn’t attacks do the same amount of damage every time?"

Calem had been playing through this game for a while now and he had studied a lot of different pokemon in order to make sure he could handle any situation.

"Uhhh… That’s a very good question," Calem made a face of deep thinking. "What I usually did was guess. You can tell by their appearance sometimes. But the sure way of knowing a pokemon’s type is by capturing it."

He felt like it was really bad advice, but that’s how he had played through the game. If he say a pokemon that looked a certain way or had appeared in a certain location, he guessed their type. “Oh! And also by looking at their moves, one can get a real good idea for their typing.” Calem tried his best to give him a good answer.

"And if you don’t have a move that isn’t super effective… Just use a move that’s neutral and has the highest amount of power. Or you could use a stat increasing move on your pokemon or a stat reducing move on the opponent to make a weak move powerful. And if you think you can’t defeat them like that, its best to switch out for a team member that can handle it."

Calem knew this was a lot to go over, and was getting a little worried that it went over Wally’s head. “Do you need me to repeat anything?”

"I don’t think so… I’m pretty sure I got it all…"

Type advantages… Boost stats if you’re weak…

"Hey, would you mind sticking around for a battle or two? Just to make sure I do it right."

Without waiting for an answer, Wally sent out Kirlia to follow him into the grass. When a poochyena popped out to attack him, he reviewed again what Calem had told him and called out his command.

"Kirlia, use confusion!"

He surprised himself with how little his voice shook. He was also surprised by the fact that his attack didn’t phase the poochyena at all, who flew in for a tackle.

Okay, it must have missed. I’ll just have to try again.

"Kirlia, try confusion again!" he called out.

When once again, his attack didn’t have any effect, Wally started to panic.

Standing by the river, dripping wet, Calem pointed to his pokemon, “This pokemon? Oh this is Franky, my Chesnaught.” Franky gave a small growl, still not trusting the stranger, who’s name was now known to Calem. “Be quiet and don’t be rude,” he playfully snapped at Franky, who looked at him with apologetic eyes.

Looking at how Gary stared at the giant grass pokemon, he chuckled opening the menu to access his pokedex, allowing for Gary to see it’s stats on the small screen, “He might look intimidating, but he’s actually a nice one. Loves to eat. He was adorable when he was a tiny Chespin. He was my first pokemon.” Calem smiled as he remembered the first time he met the pokemon, just before hearing the news of the reality of this virtual game..

His eyes caught sight of Gary’s own pokemon, a small Eevee. It looked like it was about to strike at any moment, but seemed a bit to stiff to actually do anything. “Hey little guy,” he kneeled down to get a better look. He put his hand outwards to see if the pokemon would greet him. But he just stared at him with a defensive glare. “Oh well… Guess he’s a shy one.”

Getting up, he stared out at the river, “So how long have you been fishing? Trying to get some dinner? Or maybe hoping to add to your party?”

Chesnaught.

Gary pondered over that Pokemon’s name, mentally going through his PokeDex and knowing that he’d never seen it before. Luckily for him, however, Calem seemed to know what was going through his mind and was already pulling out his very own PokeDex as well.

"Oh wow," he murmured, staring at the tiny screen with an intent look on his eyes. "Chespin… I’ve never heard of that Pokemon, either. I don’t think it’s available in the Kanto region."

Having done a fair amount of research prior to the in-game lock down, Gary knew for a fact that there were only 151 original Pokemon from the Kanto region. That number nearly doubled if you included the nearby Johto region, which he knew he was going to end up traveling to at some point in his Pokemon career. However, any additional Pokemon were just new evolutions introduced at a later point in the game’s making. And seeing as how there was no sight of a single Chespin anywhere in Kanto, the Pokemon had to be foreign.

"What region did you first spawn in…" Gary’s question faded out as he noticed Calem staring at Eevee, who was arguably just as defensive as Franky, if not more so given his small stature.

"This is Eeevee. Don’t mind him. It’s not often that we interact with other players, and so I guess his social skills haven’t exactly been refined, hehe." On that note, Gary also went down to his haunches to pet the little guy. "Relax. They’re not gonna hurt us." And, albeit skeptically, Eevee softened up. Just a little bit.

"Er, none of the above," he joked, his attention now turning to the Old Rod that was lying on the grass some several feet away. He must have thrown it in his scare. "I ran into the Fishing Guru NPC about an hour ago and got myself that rod over there. We were just now testing it out for the first time."

Calem felt uncomfortable at how gloomy the trainer seemed. He could tell that the trainer was having a hard time mastering the mechanic to training his pokemon. Although he did look like a weak trainer, he could become a competent one with some teaching. But who could…

"Say, Calem? Do you think you could help me with training?"

Calem was surprised at this request. “Uhh, I’m not sure if I am qualified to do that…” he trailed off as he looked at the trainer. Wally had a look of determination in his eyes, and it was slowly dissolving with the realization that Calem might decline on helping him. Not wanting to let him down, Calem smiled and said, “Sure, why not. I’ll help you.”

With that, he asked Wally to follow him around the area in the grass. “So, what you want to do is give yourself some time to think about the battle situation and your pokemon’s moves. Of course, it’d be best if you do it quickly, but you’re still in the beginners stage so don’t worry too much about it.” Finally encountering a pokemon, a cute Minun, Calem began again after releasing his Mudkip, “Look, this Minun is an electric type. That’s super effective against Nami. You’ve got to take their typings into consideration. Since Nami know’s a ground type move which is effective against electric types, I’ll command her to use it. Now Nami, use Mud-slap!”

The pokemon gave a small shout as it splashed the foe with a shot of mud. The battle continued on until the Minun was defeated.

"See, its simple really. Just know the stock of your pokemon’s moves and other pokemon’s typing and you’re good to go," he gave a reassuring look to Wally. Hopefully this wasn’t too much for him to grasp..

“Sure, why not. I’ll help you.”

"Really? THank you!" Wally exclaimed, following Calem into the grass.

Wally nodded as he watched Calem battle. He made it look so easy! It seemed like all he did was get close to the wild pokemon to get it to battle. Was he not getting close enough? And how did he know what types to use?

"How do you know what type the wild pokemon is? And what happens if my pokemon doesn’t know a type that’s super effective against it?"

Upon arriving in the Hoenn region, Calem looked around in search of pokemon. After catching a few, he caught the sight of a rare pokemon. Although it was only level 2, it was a Mudkip. Squinting several times, he finally came to believe his catch. Excited, he threw out his Butterfree, hoping that Chester wasn’t too high of a level to make the pokemon faint.

Commanding the use of a Stun Spore, the Mudkip could not move. Seeing its expression as it struggled broke Calem’s heart. Wanting to catch the pokemon as soon as possible, he quicky took out a great ball and threw it. The few seconds that it takes to complete the capture felt so slow as the ball nudged and moved. When the small stars streamed outward, confirming the catch, Calem gave a gleeful shout.

A small menu box appeared

Would you like to give your newly caught Mudkip a nickname?

Clicking yes, Calem thought carefully about a name he could give his new partner. It’s a female Mudkip… Water-type… Quickly he typed out her name and entered it.

He named her Nami. And quickly he went to the Pokemon Center to heal her. He couldn’t wait to introduce her to his other pokemon…

~Few hours later~

Training her was tough, slow, but rewarding. After learning Mud-slap, Nami could incapacitate the week electric-type pokemon that were in the forest. To Calem’s irritation, Nami had to be careful around the poison type pokemon, who could leave a status on her.

After tossing a pecha berry and healing her with a potion, Calem sought out for another pokemon. Seeing another Gulpin, he commanded Nami to chase it.

Upon catching up to his pokemon, he saw a startled trainer. He looked like a novice, so Calem wasn’t too worried. Looking at his attire, his jeans ripped and covered with mud, he thought he might look a little menacing. He smiled at the trainer and commanded Nami, “Use Water Gun!” It was a critical hit, and the Gulpin lost half of his HP.

Calem quickly finished the battle, glad that Nami wasn’t poisoned, as he didn’t want to buy more berries. Looking at the trainer, he said, “Hi there. Sorry if that was supposed to be your catch. My name’s Calem.”

"No no, it’s not a problem. I’m Wally. I was just… attempting to train."

He laughed at himself. It was pathetic really, and he knew it. In all of the time he had been trapped in the game, he still hadn’t figured out how to initiate a wild pokemon battle. This trainer could probably white him out should he choose to. Wally was too worn out and annoyed to care.

"I think I’m done here. I’ll just…"

His voice trailed off, as a thought came to him. He obviously wasn’t having much success with even battling wild pokemon on his own. Maybe this trainer could help him.

Interested in seeing if the trainer could catch the wild Goldeen, Calem watched intently. When the pokemon was pulled out of the water, the unknown trainer had a look of disappointment on his face. Calem chuckled. Turning back to see to his pokemon, heard the Goldeen shout and spray water at the trainer.

Seeing him drenched and angry, Calem started to laugh, covering his mouth as to not draw attention to himself. The unknown trainer shouted a command at this Eevee, who let loose a stream of stars. Watching the Goldeen try to dodge the attack, swimming towards his direction, Calem suddenly realized he was in the range of the attack.

Looking around, trying to see what he should do, Calem saw a giant shadow appear and protect him from the attack. His Chesnaught deflected the stream of stars that were heading towards Calem with a precise usage of Pin Missile. Giving a sigh of relief, Calem gave a pat to Franky, who growled affectionately.

Franky glared over at the fishing trainer and irritably roared at him for almost attacking his trainer. The roar scared away the hiding Goldeen, which quickly swam past Calem. Looking at the trainer, he gave him a look of sympathy, “Sorry about scaring away your catch. Next time, be a little more careful where you aim that attack,” he chuckled.

Swimming over to the trainer, Calem got out of the river and stuck out his hand, which was dripping, “Nice to meet you. The name’s Calem.”

Gary was ready to shit himself.

He had been so focused on attacking the Goldeen that he didn’t even notice the irritated Chesnaught until there was a Pin Missile attack firing back his way.

"WHAT THE-" Gary yelled out, his eyes widening as he tried to identify the giant grass-type. From where he was standing, it looked like an albino Cloyster floating it’s way towards him. And frankly, he wasn’t sure if he should stay and fight it or run.

He was only just a few seconds from bolting when Calem’s head popped out of the water, taking the trainer by complete surprise. “Uh, sorry about that,” he replied back hesitantly. “I didn’t think there was anyone else out here.”

Gary watched as Calem pulled himself out of the water, his confused expression never wavering. He was still dazed from everything that had just happened and had long since forgotten about the wild Goldeen. “I go by Gary - Gary Oak." Although skeptical, he finally decided in making an attempt to shake off what just happened and returned the handshake.

"Hey, quick question," he said, a weary glance now tracing over as he cautiously turned his attention to the giant grass-type several feet away.

"What Pokemon is that?"

Franky gave a small growl, still not trusting the stranger, who's name was now known to Calem. "Be quiet and don't be rude," he playfully snapped at Franky, who looked at him with apologetic eyes.

Looking at how Gary stared at the giant grass pokemon, he chuckled opening the menu to access his pokedex, allowing for Gary to see it's stats on the small screen, "He might look intimidating, but he's actually a nice one. Loves to eat. He was adorable when he was a tiny Chespin. He was my first pokemon." Calem smiled as he remembered the first time he met the pokemon, just before hearing the news of the reality of this virtual game..

His eyes caught sight of Gary's own pokemon, a small Eevee. It looked like it was about to strike at any moment, but seemed a bit to stiff to actually do anything. "Hey little guy," he kneeled down to get a better look. He put his hand outwards to see if the pokemon would greet him. But he just stared at him with a defensive glare. "Oh well... Guess he's a shy one."

Getting up, he stared out at the river, "So how long have you been fishing? Trying to get some dinner? Or maybe hoping to add to your party?"

How it's Done | Wally & Calem

"Kirlia, confuse ray! Wait, no. Confusion!"

Kirlia was the one getting confused at Wally’s jumbled commands. The gulpin he was attempting to battle made its careful way away from the site. Kirlia’s attack didn’t even come close to landing. It was only a couple of moments before it disappeared entirely into the woods.

"It’s not even supposed to be able to do that!" Wally cried in frustration.

He had been determined when he had gotten up that morning to start training. He knew his pokemon weren’t as highly leveled as most trainers, and at some point that could be deadly to him. He was also aware that it would take days, maybe weeks, before his pokemon would be battle worthy.

What he hadn’t counted on was how difficult it would be to engage in a battle with a wild pokemon. Out of five attempts, only the second of the pokemon he had found actually battled with him. And now he was tired and ready to give up.

A moment later, the gulpin flew back into the clearing, followed by a pokemon Wally did not recognize. The pokemon stood over its prey, waiting for further command. It was clearly a trainer’s pokemon.

"Wh-what?"

Commanding the use of a Stun Spore, the Mudkip could not move. Seeing its expression as it struggled broke Calem's heart. Wanting to catch the pokemon as soon as possible, he quicky took out a great ball and threw it. The few seconds that it takes to complete the capture felt so slow as the ball nudged and moved. When the small stars streamed outward, confirming the catch, Calem gave a gleeful shout.

Clicking yes, Calem thought carefully about a name he could give his new partner. It's a female Mudkip... Water-type... Quickly he typed out her name and entered it.

He named her Nami. And quickly he went to the Pokemon Center to heal her. He couldn't wait to introduce her to his other pokemon...

~Few hours later~

Training her was tough, slow, but rewarding. After learning Mud-slap, Nami could incapacitate the week electric-type pokemon that were in the forest. To Calem's irritation, Nami had to be careful around the poison type pokemon, who could leave a status on her.

After tossing a pecha berry and healing her with a potion, Calem sought out for another pokemon. Seeing another Gulpin, he commanded Nami to chase it.

Upon catching up to his pokemon, he saw a startled trainer. He looked like a novice, so Calem wasn't too worried. Looking at his attire, his jeans ripped and covered with mud, he thought he might look a little menacing. He smiled at the trainer and commanded Nami, "Use Water Gun!" It was a critical hit, and the Gulpin lost half of his HP.

Calem quickly finished the battle, glad that Nami wasn't poisoned, as he didn't want to buy more berries. Looking at the trainer, he said, "Hi there. Sorry if that was supposed to be your catch. My name's Calem."

[Obtained the Old Rod!] - Gary & Calem

Garuda cawed in protest just before reaching a rather wide river. Calem frowned and said, “C’mon, just a little longer and we will be at the next city. You can rest there.” This was no use. Suddenly, the pokemon widened its wings, jerking his trainer forward and began the descent. Annoyed, Calem jumped off his Pidgeotto and sent him off to find a tree to rest.

"I guess we can take a break for now…" The trainer sighed as he knew he wouldn’t make it to the next town by sunset. And I didn’t feel like camping out either… Releasing his pokemon, Calem went to the edge of the river and removed his shoes. Dipping his feet into the water, which was cool, he felt a little better. I do feel like going for a swim... He called out to his Gardevoir, “Watch over Chester and Dana, all right, Titanya?” The pokemon gave a nod as the Litleo went off chasing the Butterfree. Removing his clothing and putting on his swimming trucks, Calem prepared himself to get into the water.

Feeling a giant hand on his back push him forward, Calem shouted as he fell face first into the cold water. After gasping for air, the trainer glared at his pokemon. “Franky, you’re going to get it!” The Chesnaught laughed and dived into the water. After having splashing the pokemon for a few minutes, and being held underwater by it, Calem and Franky began to swim around.

The water was refreshing, especially in the heat. Floating on his back, he kept an eye on his pokemon, following them as they moved along the river’s edge. Calem decided to swim underwater, so he equipped his goggles and went in. Following the soft current of the water, he saw schools of Magikarp and Goldeen. He even saw a Dratini swim by and wished he had been ready to catch it. Continuing to swim downstream, he saw a Goldeen being attracted to a bobbing hook a dozen meters away.

Surfacing quietly as to not scare the pokemon, he watched at the unknown trainer sat and waited for the hook to be pulled by the fish pokemon

More focused than ever before, Gary stared at the pool of water, his eyes refusing to wander from the the fishing line. This was his first time fishing on VRO and it had been years since he’d even gone fishing in real life. That being said, he could only hope to have better luck in this would.

Eyes intent, several minutes went by until something tugged at the line. His rod began to quiver and before he even knew it, he found himself quickly reeling the critter in. “We got something! We got something!!! Eevee, get ready!!”

Suddenly springing to life, Eevee homed in on the line, his eyes growing fierce as he began to charge up a Swift attack. “On my command… 3… 2..”

And just before he reached one, Gary summoned summoned up all his strength and tugged back, the line racing up and a Pokemon jumping out!

What.

"A Goldeen!?" Gary stared at the fish Pokemon, not entirely sure of what to make of it. It wasn’t a terrible Pokemon - not at all - but from the way the Fishing Guru had explained things, Gary was certain that he’d be able to hook something more… interesting.

"Uhhhh…" Gary frowned, unsure if he should labor Eevee into battling it or if he should just let it go. But, not even getting the chance to make that decision, the angry Goldeen quickly popped off the hook and shot the trainer with a Water Gun attack.

"HEYYYYYY!!!!" Now drenched from head to toe, the trainer grew red in the face, determined to seek revenge. "SWIFT!! Don’t let it get away!!!"

And, without even getting a chance to finish laughing at his trainer’s misery, Eevee redirected his attention back to the wild Goldeen and shot forth an array of stars, unaware that there was another trainer swimming within firing distance.

Franky glared over at the fishing trainer and irritably roared at him for almost attacking his trainer. The roar scared away the hiding Goldeen, which quickly swam past Calem. Looking at the trainer, he gave him a look of sympathy, "Sorry about scaring away your catch. Next time, be a little more careful where you aim that attack," he chuckled.

Swimming over to the trainer, Calem got out of the river and stuck out his hand, which was dripping, "Nice to meet you. The name's Calem."

Siesta :: Chiko & Calem

The psychic shards glowed and moved quickly towards Franky. Not fast enough to give him a full command to block the attack, Calem had to hope that his pokemon’s defense would be enough to sustain the damage. Seeing his HP bar go down slightly, Calem decided to recover some of that HP.

"Franky, use Leech Seed!" Calem was tense with anticipation. Seeing small glowing seeds being shot out of the pokemon’s spikes, the seeds grew into vines that entangled the floating Miki. They seemed to pierce its membrane, draining some of its energy for Franky. As his health bar grew with a few more points, Calem was readily anticipating Chiko’s next move, set to give a prompt reaction.

Ugh, Leach Seed and similar moves were so annoying. The little tendrils didn’t cause much damage, Miki seemed to amusedly be viewing them as accessories at the moment, but the leeching effect would continue to take effect even if she knocked the pokémon that had played it out. At least it hadn’t done much damage for now. Chiko glanced over Franky, trying to think of an effective way to get around that chunky armor of his. Well, it would take a little time but- “Alright Miki, I suspect we’ll be at this for awhile, Future Sight!” Her black eyes opening wide, the little Solosis gazed towards the Quilladin and its trainer, almost seeming to peer through them. Bobbing gently from side to side in her gel, she hummed as she saw the attack to come, and Chiko smiled, it seemed that it would be a pretty solid hit.

Gritting his teeth, Calem knew that the attack would happen within two turns and cause a large amount of damage, probably causing Franky to faint. I guess I'm just gonna have to give my all and try to knock that Solosis out... Chiko gave him a smirk, confident about her command. The trainer stayed collected as he saw the gelatinous pokemon floating in small circles in the air. Thinking of his next move, Calem quickly calculated how much power Franky's next attack could have. C'mon Franky, give me at least 3 hits...

Pointing straight towards the Psychic pokemon, Calem commanded, "Use Pin Missile!" The Quilladin roared and his spikes glowed white. Five glowing pins shot out of his spikes, going straight towards the Solosis. Calem counted as each Pin striked the pokemon... 1... 2...

An old and beat-up fishing rod. Use it by any body of water to fish for wild Aquatic Pokemon.

"Interesting." Rotating the piece of equipment in his hands, Gary studied the small body of water in front of him, eagerly hoping to catch something of interest.

Flashbacking a few hours prior, Gary had run into an NPC inside a Pokemon Center that identified himself as “The Fishing Guru.” Although initially skeptical toward’s the man’s scripted offer, the young trainer was happy to receive the new Key Item and eagerly set out to find the closest body of water on route.

Now loaded with Net Balls by the dozen, Gary called out his trusty Eevee, readying himself to battle. “Okay, Eevee. You ready?” And just like that, the normal-type nodded, a confident grin on it’s face as it studied the pool of water before them, anxious to get started.

"Alrighty, here we go!!" And so, mustering up all the bravado from within him, Gary swung the rod forward and watched as the hook broke the water’s edge and began it’s slow descent down the lake. Silence.

And now the wait.

Siesta :: Chiko & Calem

The heat was still intense, but looking at the digital sun that shone in the sky, Calem knew it would soon cool off. Seeing the bothered look on Chiko’s face, Calem thought about calling off the battle until they were in the closest city, possibly at some battle facility or near a fresh forest, but decided he was itching for a battle. The battle would hopefully keep their minds off the heat.

“At the same time sounds fine with me,” he smirked, getting a pokeball from his belt and using the other hand to wipe at his forehead. Starting to count off from five, he took his stance and simultaneously threw a pokeball into the air as he shouted, “Five,” which released his Quilladin.

His pokemon flexed and stared down at the other trainer’s Solosis, who floated gracefully on the other side. He thought about recalling Franky, as he did not have any moves that were super effective against the other pokemon, but decided that he would command the pokemon to hit the other with its strongest moves. Giving a glance at the other trainer, who still looked slightly annoyed and smiled at her, he shouted, “Franky, use Needle Arm!”

Silently picking a pokémon, Chiko waited until Calem had counted to five before throwing out her arm. “Miki, you’re up!” As the pokémon moved forward, she smiled a little at Miki’s bubbling enthusiasm. “So it’s squishy green ball versus pokey green ball.” Well, while the solosis found the comparison amusing, she had to admit that pokey versus squishy was less favorable towards squishy. Chiko’s pokémon used her psychic abilities to keep her membrane from being pierced, but the blow still sent her flying back into the air. Thinking fast, she cried out to the pokémon, “Miki, use Psyshock!” Before she had so much as come down to her usual floating level from the strike, the solosis’ gel began to glow and she bubbled a “Soliiiiii” out. Psychic shards appeared all around the Quiladin, surrounding it from every angle before flying in to strike at once.

“Three definitely sounds fine with me. And anyways, I’ve got a few spare Revives I wouldn’t mind to share.” Now glancing at the trainer, he began a quick run through of his Pokémon’s moves and levels, hoping to find her team’s weakness. Seeing that she was close to her Pidgeotto, Calem assumed he would have to fight it. Having no moves that were weak against the flying type Pokémon and having a Pokémon that is four times as weak to its moves, he resolved to just hitting it hard with his most damaging attacks.

Now what could her other selections be… Houndour wasn’t too much of a problem, and Solosis could be hit hard if he timed it correctly. The Joltik would be difficult since it was speedy, but a good hit with a fire type move would incapacitate it quickly. Let’s just hope that their levels aren’t too high… Chiko looked like a capable trainer and might way stronger than he was, but he was ready to fight her.

“So how about it, you ready?” Getting up, he recalled all his Pokémon and mentally chose his combatants.

“Oh… already?” It was still too hot… Inclined to whine, Chiko groaned and forced herself to her feet anyway. Glancing down at herself, she almost pulled on her shirt again, but since she could still feel the heat reflecting in waves off the ground, she could not bring herself to care. It was just too hot. She would have turned down Caelm’s offer regarding the revives right away, but frankly her own inventory was so meager already that she was loathe to use anything so important as a revive. So she was sure to accept at least one, particularly if he ended up winning this battle. She only had the five pokémon anyway. Raising her hand palm upwards, she curled one finger in to beacon her three pokémon on the ground to her side, then sighed with a hand on her hip, half-heartedly nodding at Calem. “We’re ready. Should we throw at the same time..?”
