truly cannot overstate how important it is for everyone to do research into local insect species and just try to notice them when you go outside. there are beautiful metallic blue mud dauber wasps where i live and they’re common in the summer but i just never noticed them until this past year. there are so many dragonflies at the local park. in one walk this june i found ebony jewelwing damselflies and an enormous stinkbug and an emerald-coloured tiger beetle and there is honest to god so much beauty in the insect world if you are willing to look for it

SPOILERS FOR SPIDERMAN: BRAND NEW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom Holland is MY SPIDERMAN!!!!! I have always been a Tom defender and though Andrew Garfield is up there with him, Tom really outdid himself in Spiderman BND. I truly think Stan Lee would be beaming with pride at how the movie came out. I haven't read many comics, but I have devoted myself to Spiderman since watching my very first Spiderman movie, which just so happened to be Tom Holland's first rendition of Spidey. This movie hit me right in the chest and made me so proud to be a Spiderman fan. Peter finally embrace BOTH of his identities — a forgotten young man Peter Parker AND a beloved and glorified hero Spiderman — so that he could save a grieving young girl and a city of innocent bystanders is THE most in character act.

What struck me the most was the scene between Peter and Jean. Peter, who had been so deep in his grief that a telepath couldn't reach into his mind, laying his walls down to her to comfort her. Opening the most vulnerable parts of himself up to her. Using the love Aunt May gave him to reach her. THAT is Spiderman. He is a hero down to the most human parts of him. Letting Jean into his mind was a HUGE self-sacrificial risk. He was putting SO much on the line. But maybe—somehow, someway—if it could reach her? It would be worth the risk. After spending years outrunning his losses, Peter welcomed it, soothed it, and invited another into it. Not to become his grief, but to console another in the midst of it. To bear another's burdens like a TRUE hero. As a MASSIVE Peter Parker enthusiast and kin, this scene grabbed me by my throat and threw me against a wall.

Then, the "monster" Peter was battling was not Jean. It was not damage control. It was not Scorpion. It wasn't even himself. It was his pain. He was battling years of trauma and loss alone in order to be the hero everyone needed. Only when he invited Jean in did he finally save someone. And in saving someone, he saved everyone.

Because when you help someone, you help everyone.

This is the least of what I have on my mind, and I'm gonna go see it again soon to make a few more posts on it. TLDR: I love Spiderman.

Tom Holland's acting is so fucking good. He's really honed his craft over the last few years. Especially his NYC accent. It was really authentic particularly when he was talking to Frank. It's like he code switched and slipped into the accent even more like one does when they meet a close friend from their native town. Like so well done.

Also I really like how they had Peter apologize for kissing MJ, like in that specific situation there's not really any way he could have known it was all a ruse, but its still really nice that they had him explicitly apologize onscreen for violating her boundaries

This movie was so unapologetically New York it was wonderful.

Bad Bunny started playing and my theater started cheering. There’s a halal butcher shop next to a bodega, the kid Peter saved is a wearing a Knicks jersey and there’s a random tourist bus that’s filled with people wearing tacky New York merchandise. My favorite detail is when Empire State turned on its lights to support Spiderman just like how it does in real life with actual events.

The city is alive, vibrant, and in tune with Spider-Man and we see it become its own character rather than just a background setting. Peter finally interacts with the city again as a figure and as a person as well. There’s people who talk to him, who try to help in battles and these are all the moments that make the city a living and breathing home for Peter Parker and Spiderman together.

Tom Holland has such a better Queens accent too and idk but like I’m a New Yorker, and I just looked around in my theater and I saw so many people like me all wearing Spiderman merch who were all able to look on screen and see our home represented perfectly.

It is really, really funny that the new Spider-man movie decided to solve the "why is this one vigilante kid the only person in a world of superheroes tackling this threat" problem by stating that it's because Yelena Belova is currently in charge of deciding what rises to an Avengers-level threat and she mostly decides based on vibes. Immaculate. No notes.

something about brand new home that i don't see a lot of people talking about is how they deal with humanity. a large part of the story is about peter and how he thinks he's a monster. how damage control sees jean and her sister as objects, weapons to be studied and then sacrificed for "the greater good". how bruce is treated post hulk crash out even though it wasn't his fault, but the hulk is an inhuman monster so of COURSE he's in a psych ward. it tells you that we can have these notions about who is human and who is not; about what is human and what is not. but ultimately, we cannot deny someone's humanity. and it's not the biggest part of the movie, but banner's words about "what's the good and what's the bad" really ties into the whole thing about who's human and who's not.

One thing I love about Brand New Day is that Peter really does feel older. He's not a teenager anymore, he's an adult and an adult who has had to be entirely self-sufficient. And you feel that in the way he carries himself and the way he interacts with other characters, especially the detective and Frank.

Yeah, honestly, and to the point where he feels more like mid-late 20s, when they're supposed to be around 22-23 or so. But I was justifying it to myself that maybe all the stress and teenaged trauma and so on was making him look older.

Yes, you can do found family! but sometimes that "found/chosen family" doesn't need to be mommy and daddy and auntie and uncle and siblings. Characters can be friends and it can be fucking awesome.

Just saw Spider-Man: Brand New Day and really freaking enjoyed it. It had a good emotional drive to it, and the cinematography... Nicely done on it. It had a strangely dream-like quality to a fair bit of it, including scenes where Jean was controlling people, might've been an intentional choice there. Parts of it felt strange, almost like they were CGI or AI. I dunno. Seemed like they shot the memory in Peter's bedroom with May in a lower frame rate as a storytelling effect.

I said earlier that it felt like "a real movie", they did interesting things with the cinematography and the music, and they spent a lot of time working with the emotional beats of the story. It didn't feel just like "a Marvel movie"/"an Avengers movie". It made me feel excited about what they might do next. I'm glad they didn't kill Jean. Watching the movie made me feel excited about and interested in seeing what their friend group might do together. It was a really good film. It didn't feel "too long" or like it overstayed or dragged on. 👍

Also Jean was really fucking cool as a character and I liked her. And it was cool how (the writing/)Peter brought that "choosing not to kill the killer back" from the previous movie forward. It was cool when Peter was like, "You have me." and they both lost someone and he chose to try to be there for her. He has such a capacity for goodness and they have an interesting screen chemistry despite not having, like, that much actual shared screentime together. It made me feel interested in seeing them together on-screen again. I actually feel like I care about these characters. I don't know what they'll do next but I feel okay with waiting if they can make another MCU movie that actually feels like a good movie. 👏 I feel like I might actually go out to see "Doomsday" based on how good BND was, despite previously not feeling interested. It was fun! It was a good movie. I really liked it.
