Oh lord, he made her cry. He could practically hear Arabelle mocking him. Nice going, forehead. Way to traumatize the poor kid. Whit stuck out his hands and wildly waved them around.
“Whoa, whoa, I’m sorry, that was extremely inconsiderate of me.” It didn’t occur to him that she might also be one of the people who were very touchy about their world blowing up. Although many things didn’t occur to him, so this wasn’t surprising – well, her bursting into tears was a little surprising. Her pleas that he stop talking clearly fell on deaf ears.
“I mean, I don’t really know your situation, but I don’t think there’s any way to stop what happened. So it’s not your fault.” Whit took a few cautious steps forward until he could awkwardly pat her shoulder. He had no idea what she was talking about with all this gate nonsense, but it was clearly eating away at her.
“Maybe you haven’t found anyone you know here, but they said that there’s a bunch of other worlds that are taking…I dunno, refugees or whatever. So I wouldn’t worry, they’re probably still out there.” He paused; he was about to follow that up with ‘and you’ll probably never see them again so it’s not like they can be mad at you’, but decided that would probably just make her burst into hysterical tears again.
“I know it’s rough when you first show up here, but I promise it gets better. There’s lots of nice people who’ll help you out, you just gotta get settled.”
He didn’t know there was a way—a mission that she was supposed to do that would at least get the gate under the faeries. Well, even if she did succeed, it would still be up to the other faeries to actually stop the explosion. Maybe it wasn’t all her fault after all.
Cosette sniffled a little, wiping the last of her tears onto her sleeve. He was kinda silly, not necessarily making her laugh, but she could tell he was trying his best, and that made her feel like smiling for the first time in a long time.
“I wish I knew how to contact them.” She sighed, looking up at the sky. The blue expanse and clouds looked just like both Earth and Avalon. Was it possible everyone she knew was in another world out there just like this one?
“I hate being alone…it’s bad enough I can barely remember them, now I can’t even talk to them at all!” She burst into tears again, the very faint memories of her Fae Father and her school friends on her mind.
“I hate this stupid mission!” She wished she had something else to throw. “I just wanna be a normal girl! Now I’m stuck with even more strangers! Maybe forever!”
