I got very curious when you mentioned that there's a difference between Nathan and Riko in Neil's mind and that it could affect his perception of bravery. What are your thoughts on this? And what are your thoughts on Neil calling Kevin a coward when before that he was relating to Kevin's fear and underestanding it? It's an interesting moment to analyse and I'd be very grateful for your opinion. I've seen many different takes and still figuring out my own thoughts on it.

my general opinion on the difference between riko and nathan is 1. nathan is so violently evil even riko is implied to have been scared of nathan at one point. neil isn't as intimidated by riko because of growing up with nathan (that is not to say there's no reason to be afraid of riko!). Riko does not pose a threat of direct death like nathan does. so neil is going to consider riko less of a threat.

The other part of my opinion, focusing on why neil considers kevin a coward at some points, is how kevin reacts to riko vs how neil (and mary) reacted to nathan.

something that gets glossed over when discussing neil's time on the run is that he blatantly states part of why him and mary didn't "make friends" is to keep other people from getting caught in the crossfire. kevin on the other hand, while I completely sympathize with him, does kinda throw people under the bus to keep distance between him and riko. and to neil, who views riko as a childish imitation of nathan, this is something cowardly.

now through all this neil still has so much sympathy for kevin he sticks his own neck out when seeing how afraid he is of riko, so I think some people are too harsh on the "coward" usage by him, but I think the dynamic is interesting.

the thing about neil always saying that he's fine is that he's not hearing the same question that other people are asking him. he grew up not only on the run but in such a way that people were constantly on the very edge of catching him! "i'm fine" means yeah i was shot but my legs still work and i can make it to the car. "i'm fine" means i'm in a lot of pain but i won't scream and give our position away.

"i'm fine" means "i can do what is needed of me without failing you", it means "don't worry about me". there were other priorities. neil saying he's not okay is him saying that he needs help.

i think mary would have dropped everything if he said he wasn't okay, because she taught neil to fucking mean it if he did.

Neil, who grew up in a constant state of fear and witnessed the most refined forms of cruelty and murder, still clapped trembling hands over his mouth when Nathan was killed, fighting to smother the hoarse cry clawing its way out of his throat.

#so not canon but I do like to imagine that there were tiny tiny little moments where nathan was like. decent to neil. maybe it always had a #murderous undertone but just the occasional ruffle of hair or explaining what a word meant #not saying I think that's why this scene happened but it would be so interesting for neil to think back on a somewhat good memory #or just a neutral one and it be with nathan #like a “oh yeah I had to always get help getting ___ off the shelf as a kid lol” “oh who helped you?” “my fath- hm. hmmm.”

it's actually really funny how much trouble the foxes could have avoided if they just listened to neil. most of his lies are done through omission rather than complete fabrication, and sure, neil's an instigator, but he is a self-aware instigator trying really, really hard to behave. it's just that no one listens. every single time he's like 'i should not do that. don't make me do that', everybody forces him to do it anyways so now they have to learn the hard way why they should not have done that
