Fullmetal Alchemist Gaiden/Side Story- Nagaiyo/Long Night by Hiromu Arakawa

I know I reblogged a post of this story once, but I could not find it in my tags and it was very hard to find it via google (but I did!). It was also never officially translated or made available in the US. So I decided I’d just do a new post and properly tag it. 

This is a very sweet and heartwrenching little story everyone should have a chance to enjoy. These kids are the best family.

Inside Siberia’s isolated community of forgotten women. Photographed by Oded Wagenstein.

“In the remote village of Yar-Sale in Northern Siberia, live a group of elderly women. They were once part of a nomadic community of reindeer herders. However, in their old age, they spend most of their days in seclusion, isolated from the world they loved and their community. While men are usually encouraged to remain within the migrating community and maintain their social roles, the women often face the struggles of old age alone.It took a flight, a sixty-hour train ride from Moscow, and a seven-hour bone-breaking drive across a frozen river to meet them. I immersed myself in their closed community, and for days, over many cups of tea, they shared their stories, lullabies, and longings with me.On this series, the memories of the past, represented by the images of the outside world, are combined with the portraits of current reality.

By doing so, I tried to give their stories a visual representation. One that could last after they are already gone.

The Mr. Darcy Fantasy isn’t based in what it’s usually made out to be based in

The fantasy isn’t that a brooding “tall, dark and handsome” man will come and swoop you of your feet. 

Darcy changes for Elizabeth. She rejects him, she stands up to him, she insults him in a magnitude of ways, both warranted and not, and he takes all of that, and he reflects on it, and he changes his behavior. He tries to be better. Because he respects Elizabeth and he finds her opinion valuable. 

Think about it. A usual response, both back then and today, would be to dismiss Elizabeth as a “crazy bitch.” He doesn’t do that at all, no, he takes valid criticism found among misunderstandings and takes it to heart. 

The Mr. Darcy Fantasy is a fantasy about being respected and having your opinion be valued very highly. 

The Mr. Darcy Fantasy is that a man would be willing to change his behavior just to be worthy of you.
