Sunset Beach, episode 2 recap
We see Meg fall off the pier again (can my heart take this?) and the lifeguards Casey and Michael dive, one of them literally, into action. Meg is dragged to shore and resuscitated before being taken to hospital where Casey is lectured by and falls in love with Doctor Chang.
Ricardo confronts Paula about a pregnancy test heās found in the rubbish. Paula is evasive but confirms the test was negative before she leaves to respond to a call out.Ā
Ben, who clearly has some kind of issue with visual and auditory hallucinations, returns home where he sees a vision of Meg falling off the pier twice in quick succession. He then gazes at a painting in the corner and hears a womanās voice screamĀ āBen! Ben, no!ā Clearly sensing his weakness, Annie slinks in through the patio door and says he looks like heās seen a ghost. A bit on the nose, Annie.Ā
At the hospital, Paula is taking an inventory of the contents of Megās stolen bag which includes her computer, wallet and a cashierās cheque for $1000. Happy days for the thief, Tiff. Meg asks Paula if thereās a computer in town that she can use and Paula directs her to the local cybercafe, Java Web.
Tiffany is reading printouts of Megās conversations with S.B/Ben when Mark visits and tells her he saw her steal the bag. She lies and claims she left it outside the police station.
Annieās had an idea to win back the love of her father which involves an old bootleggerās boat. She tells Ben she needs cash to renovate it so she can start a business renting it out. Ben offers half the money if she can get the other half from her dad. As she leaves Ben gazes at the painting again and hears the womanās voice say āI love you Ben. Iāll love you foreverā. This painting is clearly haunted.
Annie goes to visit her dad to ask him for more money, this time for the boat. He reminds her of all the cash he gave her supposedly for law school, calls her spoiled and crazy, tells her he doubts that sheās really his child, and that heās cutting her off. So that went well.
At Java Web Mark introduces himself to Meg and she immediately asks him if he knows who S.B might be. Smooth. They get chatting and Meg gets to recap her story for the second time this episode, not including the actual episodeĀ recap at the start. Meg receives a message on the computer and invites Mark to come and watch her open it. Mark sensibly offers her privacy which she foolishly refuses because she might need directions to S.Bās house. Unfortunately for Meg this message from S.B Ā is telling her not to come to Sunset Beach and never to contact him in person or over the net. Awkward!
Paula and Ricardo have a heart to heart. He thinks she deliberately tried to get pregnant which she denies. She asks what he would have done if she were pregnant. He refuses to answer and she leaves, saying she has to go to the station.
A random colleague tells Casey that Doctor Chang is crazy about him! It must be true!
Meg is desperately trying to get in contact with S.B (apparently forgetting his last message in a fog of embarrassment). Mark advises her to finger him (lulz!) but the address that is returned is the abandoned day care centre (where Tiff the thief is! And your stuff!) and thereās no way S.B is operating out of there. Mark goes to get her something to drink (make it something strong, Mark!) while Ben, oblivious, potters around the cafe with a notebook.Ā
Spotting his chance some random jerk tries to use the worst pick up line on MegĀ āYou like games? I could show you a couple no computer could ever come up with. Why donāt we go back to my place and play?ā Meg tells him to go to hell which is an obvious invitation for the jerk to get into her personal space, touch her hair, and tell her not to be unfriendly. Meg demands to be left alone at which point Ben(!) strolls over and asks if the jerk has been overdoing the steroids again. The jerk throws a punch with the subtlety of Frank Drebin but is easily thwarted and kicked out of Java Web by Benās superior but no less ridiculous choreography.
Ben casually returns to his business with the notebook while Mark informs Meg that Ben is his boss. Meg asks if heās ever killed anyone to which Mark replies that theyāre not sure (ooooh!). Meg goes back to the computer mutteringĀ āCome on S.B. Where are you?ā as the camera pans to Ben. So subtle.
Ricardo and Paula make up (aw!) and Mark confronts Tiff about the bag that heās discovered in the shack that he gifted to her. He also tells her that he knows who S.B is but disappointingly doesnāt explain how he knows this and most importantly hasnāt told Meg.Ā
Meanwhile Ben is wandering on the beach like California Heathcliff. He angrily confronts a set of swings and hears the woman sayĀ āI love you Ben. Iāll always love youā. Again. Is there any object in Sunset Beach that isnāt haunted?
While wandering around in the dark, Meg sees that the lifeguard station has the letters S.B on its sign. She looks inside and sees Casey using a computer. It must be him! Why else would he be using a computer? He must be THE S.B. It couldnāt possibly be anyone else. I sense a love triangle/rhomboid in the near future.
Annie is confronted in her car by two men. She has just enough time to call 911 and report that sheās being carjacked before they break the lock and drag her out. Wowzers.
Sunset Beach, episode 1 recap
The premier opens with a helicopter shot over the beach - just in case you were in any doubt about where itās set. Two lifeguards discuss whether to bust the homeless girl sleeping under the guard tower. We know sheās definitely homeless because of her baggy clothes and super-flat hair.Ā Switch to Kansas and obvious main character Meg is getting married today but having second thoughts. She ends up having third and fourth thoughts as well when she discovers that her fiance is cheating on her with her best friend and maid of honour. On seeing them together she closes the door quietly, whispers a polite āBastard!ā before stealing his car and running off to Sunset Beach to find the mysterious S.B. who she has been chatting online with.
Ben, the aforementioned S.B, seems to hear voices when he looks at swing sets - an unfortunate affliction. He then runs into Annie, clearly the resident femme fatale, who throws herself at him before she heads back indoors to Eddie, the police offer she spent the night with after he was called to break up her rowdy party.Ā
Ricardo and Paula are partners - both in the police and in love. Ricardo is desperately seeking a promotion to detective but Paula isnāt as keen. Could she fear losing him?
Some rich lady seems very unhappy with being super rich and ignored by her husband. She tries to burn a fly with her giant diamond ring but is thwarted by the inconsiderate husband swatting it with a newspaper. For shame! She then monologues about how unfair it all is. Poor thing.
The homeless girl Tiffany, gets lectured by Mark when she tries to steal tips off the counter. They leave and in a hilarious case of mistaken identity Meg, fresh off the plane, gets accused of stealing the tip by proprietor Elaine. While this gets cleared up we learn that the waffles in this waffle house are terrible and that, according to Sunset Beach superstition, Meg is destined to meet the man of her dreams on the far side of the pier this evening!
Annie is still running about her apartment in Eddieās shirt when thereās a knock at her door. She tries to slam the door in the visitorās face and we learn that it is her father and he is not a happy chap. Not only because he just had a door slammed in his face but it turns out that Daddy Dearest has been having Annie followed and that sheās been using the money heās been sending her for ālaw schoolā for everything but. Oops. Also super creepy.
Mark takes Tiffany to an abandoned building but never fear! Itās so she can sleep in it! He even got her a mattress for the floor and filing cabinet to keep her stuff in. And they say romance is dead.
Ricardo gets his promotion and is so excited about it he bursts into the ladies changing room to tell Paula. Paula later relates this to her mother Elaine and we discover that Elaine, despite her love of romance, isnāt too happy about her daughterās relationship with Ricardo.
AnnieāsĀ Aunt Bette, in an effort to make things even creepier, arrives to give her some advice and on hearing that she has been followed by a private detective hired by her father, laments that Annieās dad isnāt an ex-lover instead of a blood relation. Yuk. She also tells her to beat him at his own game. A helpful visit all round.
Itās now sunset on the beach (this show is well named) and Meg abandons her bag to wander about the sand a bit and lean against a palm. What could go wrong?! She notices Ben and hears Elaineās voice telling her sheāll meet the man sheās destined to be with that evening on the far side of the pier. Unfortunately for Meg the inevitable happens and her bag is stolen. She gives chase but is thwarted by a truck trope and falls behind. She keeps up the chase regardless and ends up on the pier where her dress gets caught on a nail. This proves to be too much of an obstacle for dear Meg who, throwing her back into it a little too literally, falls through the fence and off the pier while the thief, revealed to be Tiffany, escapes. Gasp!
Sunset Beach, episode 2: How to impress circa 1997
Mistaken identity lifeguard dude: "The screensaver - I customised it myself".
Main character girl: "Wow. You must be really into computers!"
Swings just make me so mad
