This is part of my final project for one of my courses, Women and Health. It is meant to represent breaking free from the vicious family cycle of abuse, something I am striving to do with my life.and one of the requirements of the final project is to dissemenate our work in some way, shape, or form. I'm choosing to spread my work via social media. This is the final product of half of the project so far, as well as the process I took to get it to this point. The topic is domestic violence and how witnessing abuse in the home has an effect on the child and subsequent generations. It's a topic near and dear to my heart, so it was appropriate for this project.
I'm no artist (so don't judge me) so I went with a symbolic route and something relatively basic. The cherry tree represents strength and rebirth, the yellow backdrop represents a newfound happiness admist the darkness of one's past. The purple ribbon is the symbol for domestic violence awareness (which is something I'm really adament about these days), and the quote is a shortened version of this:
"You work so hard, just to end up at home crying yourself to sleep; remember you’re trying, you are moving mountains that have plagued you since you were young, and you’re trying so hard. Keep fighting, fight until you have won. Fight until you have found your way home, until the sun comes back and your heart learns to love the mornings again."
Reading this daily got me through a lot last year. This year? My heart has learned to love the mornings again, and life is good.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic abuse, PLEASE don’t hesitate to seek help. If you ever need someone to listen, shoot me a message. There’s always help available, and take it from me, I swear to God it gets better.
