I made some tarot cards! These were based off a different project I had before this (where we use find words that have meaning to us and create a design.)
The words I chose were: Oblivious, Alone, Challenged, and Expectations. Below are the explanations for each card.
I wanted these all to be a cohesive set, so the frames are all the same and they are all ocean creatures. Two of them are repeated and these repeats are gold because there was a requirement to have cards that have only two colors.
The Fool - Oblivious - a jellyfish - A lot of people debate if jellyfish are conscious, since they don’t have a brain and only have a nervous system. When thinking about this I figured not having a brain could be considered being oblivious to the world? That was my train of thought. I wanted to go with a phantom jellyfish since thats my favorite jellyfish but I couldn’t find a great way to design it.
Death - Expectations - Great white shark - When looking at the meanings behind the tarot cards, I kept seeing stuff about expectations in the death card. Originally I was going to go with a cat, since cats can have high expectations. But since I wanted it to be cohesive, I thought of a shark. Many people expect sharks to be super aggressive when they really aren’t.
Judgement - Challenged - Giant Manta Ray - For this design, I didn't really connect it to the tarot meaning very well. I just knew I wanted to use it because the art for this card stood out to me. When relating the word "challenged" to animals, I thought of endangered. Since being endangered is a challenge.
The Moon - Alone - Blue 52 - This design went through a few iterations. Originally I was going to make the card as Lonesome George, who was the loneliest tortoise in the world. The design never really looked great though, so I did a bunch of research to find some of the loneliest things in the world. Eventually I landed on the 52 Hertz Whale, the loneliest whale because its call has a frequency of 52 Hertz, which is higher than most blue whales and fin whales.
The back - A Moon reflecting on water - I wanted the back of the card to also indicate to the viewer what the theme of the designs were. I've always loved how the moon and sun reflects off the ocean, so I figured it would look great in this design.
