“Well… as long as you don’t get into any danger, and she truly loves you, then yeah. It’s good.”
---
Ferny stared into the mirror in her bathroom, putting on a glittering dark purple bowtie. The words her father had said replayed over and over in her mind. She could not believe what’s happening. It’s actually happening! He said yes! She’s allowed to go on a date!
She had worried that he would say no. Rodie is a great father, but he can be quite skeptical when it comes to letting his daughter go on a date. He’d hate for a failed romance to break her, but he’d hate it even more for his fears to get in the way of her happiness.
Ferny smiled, the glint of the bowtie sparkling before her. Today was going to be a good day.
---
The smell of fresh bread filled the mystic forest Cat Needle resided in. Her friends and family wanted to make sure she was ready so badly they helped prepare the food she would bring, and even a flower crown tailored to her specifically. Good, she needed to be ready—especially for her first date with the girl she loved. The girl she has loved—for a while, now.
Cat Needle took a deep breath. “Are… are you sure th—that she would like it?”
“I’m sure she’d love it,” Naliki reassured her again.
Dr. Larry called out from behind them, “Pack up on me, we will leave soon!”
“One second.” Cat Needle rushed to the nearest flower bed to grab a bundle of flowers, tying it up into a bouquet with long leaves. She ran back to Dr. Larry. “I am ready!”
“Now let’s go!” He picked her up and took off, heading to Finny Lagoon.
---
“Alright! Listen up!!”
Nicole’s commands echoed all around Ferny’s home, followed by Rodie, Grimm, and Chimera picking stuff up and placing them on the beach. She watched her dear friends from the distance, hard at work preparing a picnic at the beach to make sure her date goes well.
A few moments passed.
Something fell into the water. A dragon—Dr. Larry, Ferny thought—emerged from the splash and landed on the beach, and from his back, Cat Needle jumped down. Oh, she’s here.
Ferny busted out of her shack with style. “Welcome!”
Cat Needle slowly approached her, flowers in hand. Everyone else backed away, leaving her alone with Ferny.
“Hey CN,” Ferny greeted her.
“Oh! Hi Ferny…” Cat Needle’s eyes widened at the sight of the person standing in front of her. Wow, that bow looks really good on you. She handed Ferny the flowers, which she gladly accepted.
The food Cat Needle brought caught Ferny’s attention. She tilted her head in curiosity. “I see you got the picnic stuff ready!”
“Would… you like some…?”
“Of course!”
They walked over to the picnic area, where Naliki had set up the food. Cat Needle joined her sister in setting it up, asking Ferny, “I guess this is the place… right?”
“Yeah! At this table,” she replied. “Put ‘em here!”
As Cat Needle placed down a vase with some flowers, the setting sun in the horizon cast a warm glow over their faces.
“Wow! Perfect timing!” Ferny piped up. The sunlight reflected off of her eyes onto Cat Needle’s when Ferny looked at her, eager to start the date. Her smile warmed Cat Needle’s heart, a soft blush growing on her cheeks. Sweat dripped from her face.
“S— sure is,” she replied, opening the lids of the food and drinks.
Sitting at the table her friends had prepared, Ferny opened up with a bit of small talk. “So… how have you been?”
“Uhm… n… nervous…?” A pinkish hue slowly took over Cat Needle’s metallic body.
Ferny chuckled, also nervously sweating. “I guess I’m nervous too! I’ve never done anything like this before!”
“I— I guess you can say that…” Cat Needle’s eyes darted away, only now noticing the flower she almost put in her mouth. She threw it into the sea and pretended it didn’t happen. Gosh, I gotta start with something. “So… how’s life going… for you?”
“Um… I’m doing good! Recently learned how to game with Nicole, and cooking more recipes…”
The conversation went on for quite some time, their bond getting deeper with each word they exchanged and every little tidbit of their lives shared between them. Dim rays of sunlight shone on the picnic table for the last time that day as the night fell.
By that point, Cat Needle had turned rather pink, her tail wagging. Her hands fiddled with something underneath the table, hoping Ferny didn’t notice. She listened to Ferny talk about her dad and how he’d been selling fish in the ‘market’, whatever that meant. She could listen to Ferny talk about her life forever. She’d never get bored. There is nothing about anything Ferny would say that could bore her, because she loved her. She loved Ferny. She loved Ferny so much, she—
Bam!
Oh no. She dropped it.
“You okay CN?”
Ferny peeked under the table. On the sand lay a colorful flower crown made of paper, adorned with branches and leaves all around it. Cat Needle blushed, her ears twitching. She must have been trying to fold it for her.
“Ferny… I can explain—”
“Ooh! What’s that?”
Cat Needle’s heart beat out of her chest, a heartbeat anyone could hear from miles away.
“It—it’s— a flower crown… for you… since I noticed you… really like doing… … origami… a lot… so…” She paused, collecting her thoughts. Ferny stared in curiosity and awe.
“So… I— I thought… a touch of nature… will enhance the light of it,” Cat Needle stammered, blushing, her whole body pink as the flowers in the vase.
Taken aback by Cat Needle’s words, Ferny exclaimed, blushing a little as well. “O— oh! That’s sweet, actually…”
“Hey…” Cat Needle looked around, only now noticing the crowd watching them. Man, their friends must have waited so long to see how the date turned out. “Can we go somewhere… private? I have something to tell you…”
“Oh, alright! I think I know somewhere nice, follow me!” Ferny held Cat Needle’s hand and walked a short distance before arriving somewhere. “Check this out!” She pushed some overgrown vines out of the way, revealing the entrance to a small cave.
String lights dangled from the ceiling of the cave, lighting up the stony interior. Two wooden chairs, a hammock, and a coffee table complemented the sight, giving the cave a chill feeling.
“Wow… I never knew you had a cave around here!” Cat Needle looked around, entranced by her surroundings. “This reminds me of my homeland. There were so many trees there…”
“Yeah! Nicole set up this place, I guess to have ‘cave vibes’ while she plays games. Here, take a seat.” Ferny pointed to one of the wooden chairs.
Cat Needle wondered if she should just confess right away. Will Ferny be shocked? Surprised? Will she be fine with it? Countless questions filled her mind. Should I just do it?
She took a few deep breaths. Do it. It’s now or never.
“... I want to confess something.”
Cat Needle pushed a boulder to the cave entrance, blocking it.
“What are you doing…?”
Cat Needle took a step towards Ferny. And another step. And another, backing Ferny into the wall. With a face full of sweat, Cat Needle pinned her arms to the wall.
“Woah! What—”
I’ll do it.
“Alright, Ferny… I really don’t want to hide anymore. I want to ask you something…”
Heavy breathing. Maybe I’ll ask her a few questions first, then I’ll get to the point.
“Do you… see me as a good friend?”
Ferny, still surprised, said, “Well, yeah. I do.”
Cat Needle took another deep breath. Her ears twitched, faster than it had before. “How would you feel if… if a friend of yours wanted to be… more than just friends?”
“More than friends…” Ferny pondered the question for a moment. “Like… lovers?”
Cat Needle held the paper crown behind Ferny’s back. “Will you?”
Ferny hesitated. Is Cat Needle confessing her love to her? Right now?
“I think…”
“Well, then…” Cat Needle breathed in, voice shaking as she prepared to tell Ferny the truth.
“I have… feelings for you. I’ve always wanted us to be more than just friends… … Lovers.” Her tone grew agitated, the nervous look on her face giving away everything she had ever wanted to tell Ferny up to this point.
“I’m in love with you.”
Oh.
Ferny looked away, her face turning red.
“… I see.”
“Will you… be friends and lovers with me? …” Cat Needle looked down at Ferny. “Not really as couples… but still lovers…”
Ferny fell silent.
Cat Needle began to worry again.
“Did… I say something wrong?”
“Wh— No, no! You’re not wrong!” Ferny reassured her. “It’s just…” Her leaves flared with a mix of pink and yellow. This was a peculiar feeling. She couldn’t quite understand it. “Uhh… well…”
“What?” Cat Needle’s pink body mixed in with orange. A hint of shyness grew in her voice, blushing harder.
“Well… I think… …” Ferny paused again. Sweat ran down Cat Needle’s face as she waited for the answer, colors all mixed up.
Ferny collected her thoughts and picked herself up, finally deciding on an answer.
“… Yeah. Yeah!”
Cat Needle widened her eyes in shock, her colors a mix of pink and yellow. “You… do?” She actually accepted it! Does that mean she can express her feelings properly now?
Ferny’s eyes sparkled in confidence. “Yeah! Yes, I do!”
Cat Needle breathed a sigh of relief. All this time, she had been worried Ferny wouldn’t accept it, but now, now that she can be certain that Ferny loves her back, Cat Needle can finally express her true love for her.
She put the paper crown on Ferny’s head, stepping back a little to admire how it looks on her now-girlfriend. Cat Needle couldn't help but ask.
“I… I know this is sudden… but… can I kiss you a little?”
“Eh?!”
“Look, I’ve… been bottling up my feelings about you… that’s why I didn’t confess earlier,” Cat Needle explained, “but now that you’ve accepted to be my friend and lover, I just… I— I have a weird urge to kiss you.” She looked away, slightly embarrassed about what she had just said. “It’s fine if you don’t want to… I understand.”
Ferny blinked. “Uh… sure.”
Cat Needle inhaled deeply. She picked Ferny up, observing the scales of her skin. This sudden movement shocked her, but it didn’t stop Cat Needle from pulling her closer and planting a kiss on her forehead.
Her grip on Ferny weakened and she dropped her to the floor.
“Oof!”
“Sorry…” Cat Needle grinned sheepishly, hand behind her head.
Ferny propped herself up, dusting off her body. “Well…” Still unable to get over what had just happened, she looked away as Cat Needle does the same.
…
Looking back at Ferny, Cat Needle asked, “So… do you want to try that again…?”
“Um—” Ferny took a deep breath, then turned to look at Cat Needle, “—sure.”
Cat Needle stepped forward, backing Ferny into the wall yet again. Darkness enveloped them, the dim glow of the string lights behind her the only thing lighting up Ferny’s face in front of her.
She placed her hands on Ferny’s cheeks, cupping her face, watching her eyes widen as the reality of the situation settled in for the both of them. Gazing into each other’s eyes, Cat Needle smiled. She closed her eyes and leaned forward, her lips touching Ferny’s for a moment, before pulling away and opening her eyes once more.
They looked away from each other, both turning pink.
“So…” Ferny blushed, fidgeting with her fingers. “Now what?”
Silence surrounded the cave, followed by uncertainty, as both Ferny and Cat Needle were equally inexperienced in the dating scene. You’re right… now what?
Breaking the silence, Cat Needle said, “I don’t know. I—I’ve never done anything like this before.”
Ferny chuckled under her breath. “Well, what can I say? There’s a first for everything.” She looked around. “We… we should head back. I think it’s getting late. Like, really late.”
“You’re right. Let’s go.”
Cat Needle pushed the boulder out of the way of the cave entrance.
Taking Ferny’s hand, she walked out of the cave. Wow, it really is late. Stars glittered in the sky above them, complemented by the soft shimmer of moonlight over the ocean’s surface. They went back to Ferny’s shack to stay the night there, chattering along the way.
Today was a good day.
