Straight out of Nominations.
So lets talk about something here.
And before I start let me just say that I love films. You know I do. I love film. it’s what I always wanted to do and here I am, much to the chagrin of many. Doing it. I love film and I love awards season.
I used to hate awards season when I was younger. Watching a bunch of well off people go and collect golden statues and pat each other on the back, what a way to change to world eh.
As I got older, into in the business, and actually learned to appreciate it and the work you have to put in just to be recognized for what you do, I started to understand it and love it. While awards shouldn’t define you or just be your goal. To graft and love and make the best film possible should be, and awards are the culmination for a project after years, sometimes decades of that work. I’ve won a few my self. A lot of the time it’s not even really about the project you just did. (Even though it’s supposed to be.)
It’s your peers and people in the industry finally, or suddenly (albeit some begrudgingly) telling you that you’ve earned their respect, because you have deserved it. You may just have done something out of the blue or you may have deserved it years before, but it takes the right combination of things for these things to happen. Not that I won’t strive for it but I’ve come to terms with my current mid table position and thus never look at recipients in envy but always with in admiration.
Where the fuck is straight out of Compton?!
Yes there is a cast nomination for the SAG awards and rightly so, and it’s been nom’d and won a few smaller awards, but The main events. The Golden Globes? The Baftas? The Oscars? What the actual F***?
Original screenplay sure, thank you, that’s the least it deserves. But where are the cast nom’s? Cinematography, Music, Editing, and Directing.
This isn’t about me being black. I watch a lot of films. A LOT – When awards season comes, I’m sent up to 90 screeners to watch all the nominated films so I can vote fairly, and I get through them over Christmas and before my final votes go in.
Straight out of Compton was one on the best films in many ways. Cinematically, performance wise, and of course the writing. Now I’m not saying that all these categories should win stuff, but the nominations should reflect what a lot of people have seen… One of the BEST films of last year.
At the very least F Gary Gray should be recognized. It’s not like he fell of his bike and landed luckily into this quality directing. He’s earned it.
Now I’m not one of these conspiracy theory guys but last year, The Selma screener came through late and everyone was like, the screener came late and it’s not fair etc. I’ll be honest, David Oyelwo was brilliant and should have been nominated but other than that. It was a strong year and other films were better.
Straight out of Compton was the 1st screener that came. So what’s the excuse now? Was it too early???
Look I know there is a massive debate about diversity etc and the supposed industry problem. It’s not an industry problem. It’s a society problem. Because it’s not about if more people from diverse background were on screen then there would be fairer results…
Stop teaching our diverse kids they have to be the stars. They can be, but they need to know they can be the writers, producers, directors, Execs, commissioners, script editors, editor, camera team, DOP, sound man. Etc etc.
(Same with football, where are all the black managers? Our kids are only taught to be players or bust. Then they get injured and what… Show some young ones the knowledge of coaching from the start.)
It’s about if more diverse background children are shown they can be these other things, do these other jobs, society and thus the industry will balance itself.
More diverse writers, Producers, creators, Exec producers, Commissioners = More diverse voters = A better understanding of where we all come from = more diverse voting and = diverse results.
Straight out of Compton is another victim of this and I couldn’t really sit back and let this one go.
