Ilya is desperate to know if those sketches of him printed in the illustrated news are accurate. But he is here to work. There have been no further updates in the paper regarding the forgery case, so Ilya figures he has a bit of time. Distracting Shane Hollander will come later.

“Ah, Mr. Hollander, early as usual.” “Good morning, Mr. Hunter.” “I take it that your counterpart has not arrived yet?” Shane pauses at the rack of foils. “He isn’t—it’s not like that.” “All I meant was that you’re the most evenly matched duellers I’ve ever coached. Wouldn’t you agree?” “No,” says Ilya Rozanov, striding through the doors into the hall and tossing his coat onto a chair. Unlike Shane, he’s arrived with his fencing jacket already on, though mostly unbuttoned. He smirks at Shane, then bows extravagantly at Mr. Hunter. “I am better. Hollander has yet to beat me this term. Both here and in classroom.”

Further out, a few people are catching waves. Shane’s attention locks on a broad shouldered figure, his golden hair glinting in the late afternoon light. He’s riding the wave like it’s an extension of himself, smooth and powerful. “You aren’t there yet,” Rose says. Her smile is complicated. “Ilya’s a force of nature.”
