As The World Falls Down
Something felt off.
It was another mission. The usual briefing, - Diagon Alley, six man team, Lynn keeping touch with Wilde back at Orriz Road, simple instructions; scope the street out, ensure the area was safe before the Ministry gave the clear for the public to mingle again. It didn’t stop the public from mingling already, the bustling street a clear sign that the Wizarding community felt a sthough the worst was over, but a job was still a job. Rose was covering a team over in the west, and he was here. Diagon Alley, at it’s busiest since the war had begun.
At that point, however, James had learned to differentiate between what felt tense, and what felt off. The world was tense, - not sure if they had reached the end of the storm, or the eye of it. But the people seemed calm, and while James was more than happy to go back to the Ministry, and to Orriz Road, with reassuring words, there was something about the familiar street that stopped him from returning.
They had a job to do. Peace or not, he would see it through.
His wand was holstered to his forearm, stuck with Louis’ latest ingenious invention; with one flick of his wrist, the wand would be in his duelling hand, without risk of it getting caught in the hip holster his father had begun to favour. It was a small relief, but a relief all the same. James, who had been caught in a moment of staring at the shops around him, forced himself to focus. They were on a mission, for Godric’s sake. Search the shops, search the basements, clear the street. He shook his head, turning back to his team to start their work, -
- when Ryder’s gaze turned to something behind him, and the bolt of lightning hit James’ back before he could hear Ryder yell a warning.
James fell, body convulsing with the electricity that pulsed through his veins. It burned, made him seize up, caused the civilians around them to go running, screaming, - though all James could comprehend was fire, and pain, and loud, muffled noises.
There was satisfaction in the strike that hit the target, the way the other man tensed as he fell to the ground, shaking and convulsing. He wasn’t dead just yet- but he would be soon. The blasting curse missed the blond witch that had been his target, left a crater in the ground and the soldier moved forward, undeterred as he approached Potter and fired off another hex.
A member of his team blocked it this time and the soldier fixated on the man before him. He didn’t know the man’s name, nor did he care for it. All he knew was this man wasn’t a hero, and the curse he sent flying at the soldier was strong, but blocked easily enough despite it. Even when the witch joined in, and the two of them were working as a single unit, the soldier wouldn’t lose easily. He wouldn’t go down.
Instead, he blocked spell after spell, firing his own off faultlessly. They were good, but he was better. He had to be. And they had to worry about the civilians around them. The soldier had no such concerns.
So his next shot went wide, grazing a civilian just to watch the Aurors react, torn between himself and protecting the others, as they moved forward. His steps were slow and deliberate, tension crackled beneath his skin and as the Aurors moved he sent a curse flying at them. It was the wrong target, of course, his hair dark but too long, his eyes the wrong color but it was soothing in a way despite it all watching the curse flay him and the man fall to the ground bleeding out. He wasn’t dead yet, but he would be soon, and in the mean time...
The soldier had to dodge a series of hexes, body twisting and lightning crackling around him as he threw up a shield charm. One spell struck him, singed his arm through the protective clothing, another nearly took out his leg, and the soldier sent out a blast of lightning that surrounded them forcing the others away as he focused on Potter now, wand raised.

As The World Falls Down
The soldier had another mission. That was the only reason he was ever pulled out of stasis, that the spells were lifted and he was truly able to be again. The war was over, had been over for-
He didn’t know. Had no idea how many missions he’d had since. His body still bore the scars from them, even with the protective clothing he wore. They were not the robes that his targets so often wore, but tight fitting pants and a shirt, designed to deflect magic. Between that and the mask that both hid and protected his face, he was well shielded.
But his targets had only gotten harder to kill, as the years passed. He knew this one would be the hardest. James Sirius Potter. The Golden Boy of the Ministry, Son of the Savior of the Wizarding World. He was a level seven threat. Fully capable of eliminating most assailants the Brotherhood sent after him.
The soldier was not most. He’d been trained better than that, had long since learned to master both his magic, and his powers. The Potter boy would die. The soldier had never been more confident of anything else, as he apparated into London, finding his footing easily on the roof he landed on. He had twenty four hours to complete his mission, and the first four were spent doing recon, concealed under layer after layer of disillusionment charms. The intel in the Ministry said that Potter would be on a mission of his own in Diagon Alley soon. It was best to be prepared for it.
Potter arrived as the soldier positioned himself, right on time. The soldier felt the lightning that rose to his fingertips. It had been too long, since his last mission, he thought. Too long, since his last kill and using his power would be a relief. But still, he waited from his perch, concealed until Potter’s focus had shifted completely on his mission.
And then, he dropped to the ground, spells dispersing to leave him visible as he landed. Lightning rose then, and he remembered his handlers words clearly.
‘Potter is important. Kill him slowly and painfully. Make it hurt, and be sure it’s visible.
All casualties are acceptable.’
So he let the bolt of lightning loose, sent it straight at Potter, and immediately fired off a silent Blasting Curse, moving forward slowly. Their were other Aurors around. Civilians everywhere, but the soldier didn’t care. He had eyes only for his target.
