Coffee was important. America had never been a morning person, not even when she was a kid, so sheâd learned to lean on caffeine at an early age. It was one thing that was, thankfully, a multiversal constant. Every universe had coffee of varying quality and price, but only this world had this particular coffee shop. It had been her favorite since she was a kid, and standing in line awaiting her turn to order, she could practically already feel the surge of energy the cup would grant her.
So focused on her quest for caffeination, she wasnât paying much attention to the people around her. The boy behind her looked passingly familiar, sure, but America had been jumping from universe to universe since she was six years old. Just because she recognized someone didnât mean she knew them. She might have met a version of him once, in another world, but here? She might be a stranger to him. And talking to strangers as if you knew them was a good way to be labeled as crazy.
Except⌠apparently, no one told this kid about that. He was tapping her on the shoulder, and then he was going on on what was a painfully awkward ramble. America quirked a single brow, tilting her head to the side. âDid you just ask me if Iâm old?â She questioned, smirk playing at her lips. Getting a better look at him now, she did recognize him⌠but definitely not from here. It had been another world when sheâd seen him last, and heâd been much younger. âYouâre a long way from home, chico,â she commented, sizing him up. âAnd a lot older than you ought to be. There a story here?â

Jon had an affinity for sticking his foot into his mouth. It was something he did often, embarrassingly enough. It was never with bad intentions, just he tended to act before thinking. It was something his dad told him would be his downfall, if he didnât stop charging in head first with what he thought was the best option first then heâd get someone or even himself hurt. He was nineteen now and still tending to make the same mistakes he did when he was twelve. Some side effect of growing up way too fast he supposed, or he liked to tell himself that to make himself feel the tiniest bit better.
âNo? Yes? Kind of. My bad. I didnât mean it like that! Foot, mouth. Thatâs me. I do it like way too much and thatâs my secret power: being a big doofus.â Jon huffed, able to tell that she was likely amused at his word spillage. The reminder of his...displacement was one that made him frown slightly. âYeah, tell me about it,â Jon sighed softly, âitâs a pretty weird and kinda complicated story. You got time?âÂ
Maybe if anyone could get it, at least to a degree, itâd be her. âI donât remember if I introduced myself properly last time, but Iâm Jon. I can get your coffee if you got time to hear about bonkers grandfathers and uh,â glancing around casually, or as casually as Jon could manage, he then looked back to say in a hushed tone to the girl, âblackholes, then I sure do a got a story for you.â
