Hi! Hello! Welcome to Supertale, an AU that I am genuinely amazed no one else seems to have made yet!

That being… an Undertale superhero AU!

We’ve got heroes! We’ve got villains! We’ve got goofy costumes and fun powers! We’ve got nemeses and sidekicks!

There’s even like, a plot. You know, if you’re into that.

This is an askblog, so if you’re at all interested in this AU… maybe send a few of those! Either to me or to the characters, whichever is fine!

AU info:

Supertale takes place in a world where the war between humans and monsters never happened. In fact, humans are actually a subspecies of monster in this au. In lieu of monsters having magic and humans having determination, neither race has either. Instead, they get superpowers, which show up essentially at random.

This story is overall intended to stay pretty light and fun, with a focus on the entertaining and amusing aspects of a superhero setting rather than the dystopian ones. There will be darker and more serious themes later in the story, but nothing beyond what you’d expect from like… a kids’ cartoon.

The main comic is planned to be pretty PG, content wise, but there may be occasional allusions to the fact that most of the adult characters in this au do in fact fuck, and I might occasionally do some more risqué art or writing as the mood strikes as bonus content outside of the main narrative. Anything explicit will be tagged (and possibly relegated to ao3, depending on how explicit it is), so there shouldn’t be any concern of seeing stuff you don’t want to by accident as long as you have #nsfw blocked in your tag filters.

Alright, ref sheet for Supertale!Undyne!

Her current alias is Starlight, but she went by Knight when she was first starting out as Toriel and Asgore’s sidekick when she was a teenager.

Her power is hard light manipulation: she can summon solid constructs out of light. She mostly uses it for spears and to summon platforms in the air to parkour on because she’s extra like that.

She had sufficient beef with Sans back when she was working under the Dreemurrs that her desire to put a spear through his face was immortalized in her back patch when she went solo, but her nemesis nowadays is Alphys. They fight to the death every week and then Undyne goes to the library to flirt with a cute librarian she met recently who has anxiety issues and is super duper a civilian no secret identity here those suspicious bruises are from uhhhh epic fail at ikea shelf assembly yup

working on a ref sheet for supertale!undyne now that she’s been introduced. should have it finished by tomorrow barring any complications

in the meantime here’s my original brainstorm page for her:

i knew from the start i wanted to put her in a leather jacket bc like. come on. what’s better than undyne in a leather jacket. (also. armor is hard to draw💀) but it took me a bit to figure out how i wanted it to look.

ended up going for a longer coat bc i feel like it gives her a sort of piratey vibe and also long coats are fun to draw. (normal size leather jacket is an idea i ended up repurposing for papyrus’ hero outfit, the watsonian explanation for which is that he greatly respects undyne and took a lot of inspiration from her when designing his own look)

her colors are green, yellow, and red because i feel like kindness, justice, and determination are all ideals she’d want to embody as a hero, especially given her role models. she’s also one of the characters to get a delta rune in her design, because in this au it’s a symbol associated with the dreemurr family and she was toriel and asgore’s sidekick when she first started out.

toriel, undyne, and papyrus are the other heroes from the main cast. as far as side characters go, dogamy and dogaressa are heroes and gerson used to be one before he retired. the six human souls were also heroes.

i haven’t hammered out the alignment of a lot of minor characters because it’s not immediately relevant to the plot, so that’s the extent of the list for now.

original concept art for supertale!gaster + a redesign i’m considering

his whole thing in this au is being just the Worst Guy Ever, so i want him to have that like…. ominous vibe, you know? like someone you take one look at and go “oh that guy does evil shit”. og design was supposed to evoke like… ancient greece or rome, to really hammer home how intellectual he thinks he is. using classical iconography to emphasize his superiority complex, you know? but i was looking through a book of fashion illustration i happen to own (if you haven’t picked up that i’m the brand of guy to own that kind of thing yet idk what to tell you) and saw one of the pieces has a cloak like i put him in for the redesign, and it got me thinking about maybe leaning further into the christian imagery i gestured at with sans’ villain design and their villain names (rapture + revelation because gaster is just. very unsubtle)

plus the holes in his palms and like i know jesus was actually held up by the wrists but the palms are very much a popular interpretation so like. the parallel remains. i think the colors for the redesign are a bit too bright and vivid still so i might try a darker red for the cloak if i end up keeping this version but overall i think it definitely conveys his vibes pretty well

she’s a villain, specifically of the “mob boss” persuasion. when in costume, she tends to play the part of one of her own enforcers, with only a few knowing that the villain Arachne and the shadowy leader behind her organization are one and the same.

she does a lot of bank robberies. like, enough that she has favorite bank tellers to hold hostage at the ones she hits most often.

her power allows her to create thread. not to control it, necessarily - she doesn’t have any telekinesis with it or anything, but it’s very durable and difficult to break, so between her six arms and army of spiders helping to put it into position, she’s very efficient at tying people up in ways that they can’t easily escape. she can also do some spider-manning in a pinch, since she has the ability to make her thread sticky or not on command. (one of the few things her power can do with it after it’s been created)

she’s not an especially high-power villain, especially given the scale this au tends towards, but she’s clever with what power she does have, and very, very good at using it to its fullest.

i spend a lot of time browsing pinterest, i guess?

mostly i just pick a character and draw them in whatever specific piece of clothing i think looks coolest this week. i also reference other stuff i’ve done a lot - something that will probably become more noticeable as more characters show up is that i deliberately have them steal design elements from each other (the watsonian excuse for repeatedly stealing from myself, because coming up with something completely original every time is prohibitively difficult)

for dogamy and dogaressa specifically, i started by drawing their canon outfits and trying to figure out how to adapt those. then i decided to draw dogaressa peeled, gave her a halter top because that’s what i’m gay about this month, and decided i liked that better. then i started thinking about some kind of symbol or pattern to base her outfit around, since that makes creating a coherent character design about 50 times easier, and spent a while trying to think of literally anything other than the delta rune because i’d already decided that that’s exclusive to the dreemurrs and their (ex) sidekicks. then i noticed the eyes on dogamy and dogaressa’s axes in their sprites and had a lightbulb both for dogaressa’s design and dogamy’s power.

for the sleeves, the thought process was pretty much entirely “hey, if hatsune miku can pull it off…”

the colors in this au are a fun little challenge i decided to set for myself, just to make my own life harder - i deliberately use the colors from the soul traits that the characters feel they most embody or are trying to embody (which doesn’t always match up to what they actually embody, especially in the case of villains…) and work from there. it makes it about a bazillion times harder to make the designs look good, but it also pushes me outside of my comfort zone and keeps me entertained, and i’m the kind of person who has to try at least one new insane thing in every major piece of art i do or else i get bored.

so dogamy and dogaressa use blue, green, and yellow, for integrity, kindness, and justice - good traits for heroes to have. red (for determination, i know it’s not canon but i have needs) and purple tend to show up more often in villains, since they’re less implicitly moral traits. actually, blue green and yellow have kind of ended out as my go-to for heroes in a lot of cases, since they’re things it’s easy to imagine pretty much any hero aspiring towards. though these colors show up in villains, too…

i had exactly nothing planned for the dog guard before you sent this ask, so thank you for sending this and reminding me to do something with them!

i’ll do the rest later, but here’s Dogamy and Dogaressa! They have a Soul Eater thing going on, if you’re familiar with that anime. Dogamy’s power is to turn into a weapon, and Dogaressa wields him. Dogamy can turn into multiple types of weapon, though he’s limited to melee because while he can theoretically turn into a gun, he can’t turn into the bullets for it to shoot and controlling the bullet calibre takes more fine control than he can really manage, so finding bullets that fit him would be a lottery every time he switched forms. He does turn into a bow for her sometimes though, since arrows care a lot less about the type of bow they’re in so she can just use normal ones. mostly he sticks to spears and axes and scythes and stuff though.

Dogamy’s weapon forms always have an eye on them somewhere.

Dogaressa’s power is enhanced senses. Superhearing and smell and stuff like that. It’s where she gets her hero name from.

She takes a lot of inspiration as a hero from Asgore and later Undyne, (not using their hero names bc i haven’t revealed them yet :p) though her feelings on Asgore these days are… complicated.

dogamy design for when he’s not turned into a weapon (+ one dogaressa)

i’ve decided that as civilians they run a dojo together because dogaressa had to learn like a billion weapons to get the most out of dogamy so why not pass some of that knowledge on? they teach basic classes in pretty much every weapon but tend to refer people elsewhere if they want to get really good at one specific one. their dojo is pretty popular for people looking to try something weird for a week to a month and then never come back, but there are also some people who keep coming back for years just because it’s an interesting way to both keep in shape and get basic proficiency in basically every melee weapon

Now that I’ve revealed Sans’ old villain persona in the comic, I get to ramble about it!

The first thing you need to know about his villain outfit is that it’s incredibly uncomfortable and he hates wearing it. There are no pockets. The struts on the halo dig into his skull and give him a headache. He literally cannot walk in it both because it drags on the ground and because he’s perched somewhat precariously on incredibly shitty stilts. (which like to wobble on even slightly uneven ground so he’s constantly having to compensate for that) The sleeves are way too long and extremely prone to catching on literally everything and basically the only thing he can do with his arms while wearing them is gesture dramatically. The fur is super light colored and it stains absurdly easily, so he has to be really careful where he stands so stuff doesn’t get on it. All of the fabric in the whole outfit is that super thin stuff that wind goes straight through. Thankfully he’s immune to cold on account of being a skeleton but it’s still annoying.

All of this is emblematic of his overall relationship with his villain persona - it was overly pretentious, incredibly fiddly to maintain, and fundamentally poorly constructed. Unfortunately for him, Gaster was a world class asshole in this au, so Sans didn’t have much choice in the matter. I’ll leave the details of that whole situation vague for spoiler reasons, but suffice to say, he was a terrible person, a worse father, and a very good villain.

Sans was Gaster’s… sidekick? Henchman? Underling? Whatever the right word is. One of those where Sans was the public facing villain who did most of the dirty work while Gaster chilled in his lab and only came out for major stuff. (or just to remind people to fear him) Due to this, Sans was a very well-known villain before his retirement, and a lot of people still see him as a kind of bogeyman, because he just sort of disappeared off the scene without any notice or explanation, so no one knows for sure whether he’s going to come back at some point. (he would really rather not)

Most villains in this au tend to be about as scary as like… Doofenshmirtz. They’re fun and silly and here to have a good time! They rob banks and take people hostage and stuff but it’s mostly all in good fun. The heroes just foil their latest schemes and then they come back in a week with something new - if you’ve ever engaged with any kind of children’s superhero media, you know the tropes I’m talking about here. Equally in line with those tropes is to have one or two villains, reserved for the times you need to temporarily shift the tone to something darker, who don’t follow the unspoken rules of conduct that the rest do. In this au, that was Gaster, and by extension everyone under him.
