the absolute insanity of the ep. 5 dance scene has me catatonic. tom hayward is locked in on her like the yearning terminator. there are heat-seeking missiles on this earth with less strength of target acquisition than this guy.

mary bennet is a stronger soldier than me for being able to function in these conditions. the poor thing is just trying to count her steps. meanwhile, loverboy mcgee is breaking his neck during every spin to ensure he has direct sight of her at all times.

very important to me that mary’s new wardrobe in london is pretty unfashionable, with color combinations that most would say are downright ugly. none of that ridiculous 2000’s coming-of-age shit where the heroine undergoes a complete 180 to fit conventional beauty standards. just mary in her little spectacles and her crimson dress with neon green trim because that’s what she likes and picked out all on her own. just mary with her perpetually messy bangs and belts of garish colors and her blue and green plaid dress with bright pink jacket. the gray, purple, pink, green, and yellow striped jacket haunts me. she’ll never be a fashion icon but she’s an icon of fashion to me—

sorry, i'm not done talking about thomas hayward. tom, the youngest child and second son, who had to move to london—far away from his family—if he was going to have a career other than the army or the clergy. tom, who believes so powerfully in the value of emotion that he loves poetry despite his naturally steady nature. tom, who sees a kindred spirit in this shy young woman and wants to see her blossom. tom, who never cuts mary off, who never talks down to her. tom, who sees miss mary bennet as an equal, and not a thing to possess or provide entertainment. tom, whose job is to argue, but who can't seem to bring himself to offer his love up with words, too afraid it will shatter beyond repair. tom, who works night and day to provide a steady future for her, yet loves her so much that he will snap his own heart in two if it means she will be happier. tom, who teaches mary how to embrace feeling—and in return learns how to be courageous.
