This will always be my favorite 19th century photo, like, ever.

Sources indicate that this photograph of the Brighton Swimming Club dates to 1863 (the year Londinium starts, hence my internet handle of 1863-project), and the presence of stovepipe hats (the really tall top hats) supports this since these hats went out of fashion by the 1870s but were very much in vogue in the early 1860s. The skimpy outfits that don’t leave much to the imagination aren’t the norm for the time, though, which makes me wonder if this was photographed at a later date or if these guys are swimwear pioneers.

I really want it to be the latter, naturally.
