Currently, I'm very much into Andor. Interests also lie in Luke Skywalker (re-emerging), The Clone Wars TV series, Rebels TV series, and the (unfortunately bad) sequel trilogy. In my Andor elitism era for the foreseeable future.

Character duo where one *remembers I don’t like fitting characters into trope boxes* is a completely fleshed out and realised person *remembers treating characters as real people and not story devices written with intent is bad* who is written by the author and *remembers death of the author* uh. In the Bix mines again (metaphorically) but I keep thinking about something I've seen for months now of "giving a female character a baby they never wanted". There are some characters where giving them a baby or a sudden deep desire for a Family™ is truly out of left field, but is it really that way for Bix? Does a female character need to say or express "I want a child" in order to have writers give them one? Just kinda thinking here. I do find it annoying when motherhood is treated as the default and, as I've said before, I barely tolerate The Baby myself but is Bix becoming a mother, regardless of the execution, really such a betrayal of her character?

I guess because I could easily see BixCass being a more "typical" couple creating a home together and having a child in a universe where All Of That isn't going on and he has a similar journey to getting his shit together like S1. Would be less compelling though.

I also love that stage of the s2 relationship and that’s what I do keep going back to in fics because the love-around-the-angst is so compelling to me. I’ve seen three separate people now with C-PTSD identify this as what Bix is struggling with (and praise her writing) and that’s the context of my fascination. As they were an on and off couple before and pretty much solidly together (even married-coded by ep 7) through s2 my thinking boils down to this: in the hundreds of days that we don’t see it would be unrealistic to expect that they had NOT talked about having a family, even if just in the context of discussing birth control. I see the baby as an “accident” of course but if Bix genuinely is finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel in terms of her trauma recovery it seems to me entirely likely that she was debating in arc 3 whether to tell Cassian… right up until the moment when he’s insistent that they’re going to leave and effectively dooms the relationship (even though it’s framed as Bix convincing herself that it’s going to be a temporary separation ). In short, I think there’s a tendency to think of the time structure negatively when it comes to this relationship… some people being unwilling to imagine “ tolerantly” or “ generously” into the gaps compared with others, perhaps. And let’s be honest: there’s a lot of prejudice against this relationship on Tumblr . But I think that if you take the “needle drop” verisimilitude at face value you can imagine scenarios and conversations that make sense of (and keep in character) pretty much everything we see on screen.

So no, I absolutely don’t need to have an explicit conversation about wanting a baby and I think that would be poor writing anyway. Andor is better than that. Bix is shown as caring about family and community from the word go. She’s an orphan who is very close to and admires Maarva. She cares for her, Brasso and Cassian like family. On Mina Rau and even the safe house, she’s trying to make a home - house plants, “decent plates” and towels etc. Trying to grab something of a normal life as a couple. As for children, there’s so much foreshadowing symbolism . She was tortured with the sounds of dying children but ends up murmuring gentle words of comfort to her child. She’s horrified at the idea that she has killed a “boy” (the soldier). She’s framed sitting next to a child that could easily be her own in 2.03. Even without knowing she’s not going to see Cassian again I can absolutely see her not only wanting to keep the child but feeling fiercely protective of it. Finally! - something she has some control over and something to fight for rather than against - a normal life. It’s a poignant irony that Bix spent years wanting to fight but her best way of effecting victory is to step back and choose for “both of us” (and I love the whole twisty choices-that-aren’t-choices thing there)

I think my only serious gripe of a “we didn’t see enough of it for it to make sense” nature is the arc 3-4 shift with such open hostility to Luthen on Yavin. (Although Poe’s done a great job of imagining into that). And my gripe of a more “they were done dirty” nature is… Vel & Cinta. But Bix and Cassian - for me, it all falls into place very nicely and writing a long canon compliant fic about them isn’t turning up any “wait, why would this be happening anyway?” issues. I love them, but it’s because they’re a beautiful mess who love each other despite that.
