it is sometimes fascinating to me how mon is lying about the core of who she is to her own husband and perrin knows she's lying and she knows he knows she's lying and it's this little game they're playing, but mon plays it so well perrin forgets she's lying and believes things like she's having an affair with tay so he never digs into the actual truth. perrin knows his wife lies but he doesn't know why. he thinks it's because she's a liar. he doesn't ever realise she's lying to protect something, so he never digs beyond the surface of what's in front of him. he's held within layers of lies enabled by his own ego and it's so incredibly clever of mon but also just. so unimaginably lonely. she's looking across at this man who is so sure he knows her game and so angry she won't simply admit it when he could never possibly imagine or understand what the truth actually is

I’ve seen a few discussions about Loftis leaning into the idea that he’s a coward. But I think, watching the show, that’s not his actual flaw. The big issue he has, which he refuses to face, is that he’s a liar. All day long he tells little lies for convenience and big lies so he can avoid facing tough situations. He lies to his son in every interaction they have and then resents that his son is distant from him. But how can his son feel close to someone whose every word is false? He hides happy photos of his wife, locking his son out of happy memories of his own mother, because they make HIM sad. In the finale, he’s practically begging Ruth to help him lie to himself about what he’s choosing to do, wanting his victim to aid in his self-deception.

Even the ding-dong ditch example at the start of the show isn’t really about cowardice. It’s about a lie he told to his friends.

To me, it’s Loftis’s constant reflexive deception that is his greatest sin and his greatest weakness. I’m curious to see where it takes him in season 2
