Why was her sister not understanding? The fact that she wasn’t being particularly coherent escaped Chelsea’s notice. Without Ainsley’s hand, for a moment she felt entirely untethered. Like everything, everyone, herself--it was all happening without her. They were in public. Somehow she cared even less than usual.

Still, her twin is right about one thing. They need to go. Chelsea cleans the knife off against the body’s clothes, sheathing it and returning it to her backpack with tight, controlled movements. Like she’s only just realized what she’s done. Her grip is firm as she takes Ainsley’s hand, not quite sure if she’s asking her to understand.
