It's Spring Break!

And from about 5 o'clock this afternoon it is Spring Break, or at least that's what our American Cousins might call it.

For all undergraduates immediate work is now over and exams are all but a distant consideration. It's time to go out and see how the world outside of campus has changed.

But before all that, we've got one last event to set off your holidays... BLOWOUT!

It's tonight at the SU and it promises to be bigger and better than ever.

There's no valid excuse not to go, you've got a whole month to recover after!

I want to wish you all the best spring break or spring holiday or Easter... however you wish to describe it.

Stay safe and enjoy them.

Thanks for coming Vernon Kay... oh hello and welcome Stevie Johnson

So, Vernon has come and gone and Stevie from Made in Chelsea is on his way. This campus seems to have as many celebrities as The Graham Norton Show. It’s fantastic to see and makes for great nights out.

Whilst we’re on the topic of Vernon coming last night to our Elections Survivor event, what a great night it was and many congratulations to the winners of the elections. We’re looking forward to working with you. So to Alex, Brianna, Jack and Nayab and everyone else who has been elected, we offer you the best of luck for the coming academic year.

As for everyone else, we have something rather special tonight. It’s also rather sentimental as tonight will be our last ever Antidote at Medicine. It’s been a running theme in my life ever since I came to Royal Holloway 3 years ago, so it will be missed, but no doubt it will be replaced with something just as fun and just as crazy. To mark the end and to celebrate Saint Patricks Day ‘good and proper’, we have our special celebrity guest and an absolutely wild night.

If nights out aren’t your thing and if I’m honest some weeks they’re not always mine, then how about our other mid-week events?

Monopoly Mondays has been building up in popularity for a while now. It’s become a great way to chill out over the board, meet new people and make friends, then lose friends and make enemies all in the time it takes to play! With £200 up for grabs, there’s no real reason why you shouldn't at least give it a GO!

And this week only we've got two sporty events for those who fancy their hand at either Pool or Table Tennis. On Tuesday the 17th March, we’re holding a pool completion where the winner takes everyone else’s £2 entry fee, so potentially there could be a great deal to win providing you prove yourself at the table.

And Table Tennis is taking over Medicine on Thursday, intended for Beginners right through to those who bat for Royal Holloway. RHUL Sport is putting on Ping Pong Tournaments right through the night!

With many more events than the ones I've just highlighted it’s sure to be another great week at your Students’ Union. If like me you’re drowning in essays and other deadlines, I feel for you and offer you a life ring in the form of study breaks at the SU. Best of luck with everything, all this work will pay off in a few months when you receive your grades.

Who will you choose?

It's your time to choose who runsyour Students' Union next year. The nominations have been submitted and the list of candidates has been released.

From Friday 6th March, you will notice election fever start up, as online campaigning takes place. Candidates are allowed to campaign on campus from next Monday 9th so that’s your time to really find out what each candidate is about and ask them tough questions. There are lots of positions up for grabs with a wide range of candidates fighting for each. The policies which the candidates put forward, really will directly affect you next year so make the right choice and not one you regret. Once you have decided which candidate sounds best, you can vote at the Students’ Union any time after 10 AM on Tuesday 10th March, but make sure you do so before voting closes at 11.59 PM on Thursday 12th.

For the elections last year our very own Jason Michalski produced and released this video campaign, which went viral and was seen by over 73,000 people worldwide. The question is, will the candidates this year top this?

All that's left for me to say is that the results will be announced on Friday 13th (it's going to be a very fortuitous Friday 13th for many candidates) at 9 PM in the SU Main Hall. If you can't attend, then you can check out the SU website or the SU Facebook Page soon after. Social Media is very likely to be 'taken over' too.

The student radio, Insanity 103.2 fm is now on air, you can not only listen to news, entertainment and music, also you can take radio training in all areas in the industry, like radio producing and audio engineering.

Our newest student’ TV platform RhubarbTV; RhubarbTV shows you what is going on in the campus and if you’re interested in filming, editing and the like or you want to know more about television, workshops and talks will be held throughout the year!

AND if you want to be a student journalist, you can get involved with The Orbital, our printed magazine of the Students’ Union which provides you a great opportunity and experience to engage in the media industry for a long-term career.

The New Year

Here's sincerely hoping that you have a fantastic Christmas and a happy new year, speaking of which, allow me to inform you on some of the great events we have coming up in January.

On the Wednesday of the new term the SU presents Element: Welcome Back Party! With few deadlines upon immediate return it's a great time to continue the holiday and catch up with your Uni friends on a great night out. As nice and relaxing as going home from Uni for Christmas can be, you'll be craving a night out again after a month with your family, trust me. As always doors open at 10pm, tickets are £5.00 and £3.50 for any early birds in before 10:30pm, so see you there!

SU Blog 15 - An End and a Beginning

As Christmas approaches I'm sure we're all very much looking forward to a break. Everyone has worked very hard this term no doubt and some subject deadlines carry right on till the end of term and beyond. Bearing that in mind, why not finish the year with a blast and celebrate in style at the SU Winter Wonderland Christmas Blowout! Whether you've been good or bad this year head on down to the SU Friday 12th December for an insane party and receive a free glass of bubbly if you're in before 11! Tickets are selling fast with only 200 left so grab yours quickly, you won't regret it!

If you don't fancy jingling your bells at the SU on Friday then why not turn up the heat with Swimming Club for their Headphone Beach Party?! I don't know whether they're very early or very late for Summer but don your best beachwear and head on down to Medicine from 10pm onwards on Thursday 11th December. Just make sure you don't forget the sun cream ;)

If you're a bah humbug and don't fancy either of these events then make sure to pick up a copy of the events guide through till the beginning of February from the SU or Medicine, there's something to satisfy all tastes. Speaking of satisfying tastes, we hope you enjoy the lovely food this Christmas and the presents too, even if your nan still buys you socks! After all, take it from Albus Dumbledore:

Festive Market on next Monday!

Have you noticed Christmas is coming?

There’s an opportunity for you to escape the tension of deadlines and to feel a pre-Christmas atmosphere!

You can get some Christmas gifts for your friends and loved ones, or just treat yourself at the Festive Market, which will be on campus on the First of December!

In the Festive Market, if you can imagine, walking around the market, you can experience luxury face painting and balloon modelling like you have never seen! You will see festive food, in the German market style at Founder’s South Quad, as well as gift stalls outside the SU building and in the SU main hall with items like jewellery, accessories, cloths, handbags, home ware and more! So take a little rest from your studies; enjoy the live music performance and your drinks – like mulled cider from Tommy’s Kitchen! Don’t forget to smile too, and have your picture taken at the pop up photo booth in the SU.

So why a Christmas event without a Christmas tree or reindeer? Wouldn’t you like to see ‘Sven’ the reindeer from the film Frozen?

Good news - there will be live reindeer waiting for you and also a reindeer rodeo at Founder’s South Quad. A huge 18ft Christmas tree will be outside the Windsor building and will be a great background for your photos. Don't forget to wait until 4:15pm, the Christmas tree lights will be switched on with a choir singing and also some minced pies, so make sure you don’t miss it! It's a great opportunity to start feeling Festive, so get ready to join us on the 1st of December.

The holidays are so near… yet so far

It’s that time of term again. For the first years, you’ll be experiencing this for the first time. It’s ‘super-manic work overload’ time. For some of you there will be deadlines pressing, for others midterm exams are knocking and for those more theatrical, it’s Showtime!

I’m not counting down the 484 hours until term ends quite yet (okay maybe I am), but I have been hoping for at least a couple of extra days to be added to the standard seven day week, in the hope that I can spend more time sleeping and less time panicking whether I’ll meet the deadlines. The winter break seems so far away; hidden behind all this work I’ve barely had time to think about Christmas, apart from watching the John Lewis advert as it gets shared across Facebook that is.

As Ashleigh gave you a wonderful introduction last week and explained all about the SU’s new promotional staff, I’ll keep my introduction short. I’m Nathaniel, I’m another promotional staff member and I’m a Human Geography third year. For me it’s the final year at Royal Holloway (hopefully) and because of this, I’m desperately trying to make the most of everything the University has to offer. So that includes getting this job, trying new sports such as badminton drop-in and golf lessons, volunteering and today it involved going back to my old 6th Form College to give a speech about life at University and the charity which I volunteer for. It made me think about my life before Uni. Life was so much quieter, there was so much less work. But life now, is still a million times better. It just goes to show how brilliant everything at Royal Holloway is. Although there is a lot more work, the courses which Royal Holloway offers just fit me perfectly. And there’s so much more going on to allow you to briefly forget about work and give you a break. I know many of you loved the Puppy Therapy Session that we laid on last week in the main hall. It was such a success that we’re holding another event very soon, on the 1st December. This time it will be upstairs in the SU because the Christmas Market is in the main hall. Last week’s event was so successful I would suggest booking your 15 minute slot at SU reception as soon as possible.

This week we’ve got a few events at the SU to let you briefly forget about work:

One of which I’m sad to say I won’t be attending, but I’m sure a lot of ladies will; The Ann Summers event is happening at the Stumble Inn on Saturday 22nd November. It concludes what has been an amazing SHAG week, which has filled in everything that sex education at school forgot to mention. For the first time SHAG week featured both talks on virginity and the enjoyment of sex. It held an STI competition, where the winning society won £150 and much more importantly, it gave us students a platform on which to discuss pretty much whatever we chose about sex and sexuality.

There’s no better alternative to work than American Pie Antidote to roll back the years and “get your groove on”… that was a 90s saying wasn’t it? It’s happening at Medicine on Saturday night, 22nd November.

We’ve got a global Café set up on Tuesday the 25th November too, it’s designed for a chance for students from all over the world to meet and get to know each other. It’s at Rialto, which is upstairs in the SU, so we’re hoping to see lots of people as literally everyone is welcome!

Accommodation Worries & Reading Week!

Looking through the not-so-recent blog posts, it’s been a while since an entry has been made! Lucky enough for you all, the lovely marketing department at the SU have hired a group of us students to keep you up to date with what’s going on, and have let us loose on the SU blog (within reason of course)! This post is a brief overview of this weekends events and how do we as first years choose who we want to live with next year…and how does it all work?

So let me introduce myself, I’m Ashleigh, a 23 year old first year B.Sc. Management student from Essex, currently living in Tuke. Yes I know what you’re probably thinking, 23? First year? I’m starting a bit later than most I know, but better late than never aye! And at the moment I am battling through the scenario that gets most of us: studying vs. social life vs. sleep vs. Netflix…oh Netflix. Over the next few months I’ll be uploading a few blog posts about student life, and what’s going on at the SU.

You’re most likely going to be seeing me and a few other promotional staff dotted around on campus during the week. We’ll be talking to you all about the events we currently have going on at the SU, come say hi, we don’t bite!

As you have all most likely fried your brains during reading week, I’ll be sure to upload events that are planned over the next few days for your to socialise with your friends and give your brain a rest.

This brings me onto my next topic: friends. We all have them, some are better than others; some drive you up the wall with their singing at 3am (and their dirty kitchen habits). Some are the type you can have a great night out with, but then don’t do any work and mope around all day, and some are the types who are there for you when you need a hug, to moan about your workload and give you a motivational talk and kick in the backside to get back on with your work.

So, how are we expected to so quickly to differentiate between our friends, and decide whom we want to live with for the whole of the second year? With all the pressure from estate agents already, and second and third years telling us to hurry up and get a house before they all ‘run out’ or ‘you’ll be left with the bad ones’. I carried out some investigating of my own.

First things first: out of all your friends, truthfully, who do you think you are going to be able to stand living with (and their habits) for another whole year? No matter how much you think they’re great, they’re hilarious and fun, are you really going to want to live with them if you’re the type of person who likes peace and tranquility when working at home? Or visa versa, you think someone from your course is amazing and hardworking, but they never go out and don’t like house parties, but you want more of social life and study balance? These are all things to consider when thinking about who to live with, just be honest with yourself. If you do agree to live with others, make an agreement with everyone on things you all do and don’t wish for from the household (e.g. don’t let recycling build up for weeks and no moldy bowls of cereal on the kitchen side…)

Secondly, budget! We all come from different walks of life, and are all on different budgets. Its great you can afford £600 a month for a huge room with an en-suite, but can your friends? You need to all organise together the budget you are willing to spend per month…and don’t forget some houses don’t include bills! Electric and water cost too!

Third, what estate agent or landlord? Speak to your friends in second and third year, look at online reviews, and be wary of those who have great houses with small prices, and bad recommendations. You don’t wish to be hit with a bill for something you didn’t even realise existed when you’re tied into your contract! Things like a ‘professional cleaner’. Speaking with Jane from ULet at the SU, she informed me that although your contract may require you to have the property professionally cleaned when you leave, this is only a requirement if the property was professionally cleaned when you moved in. I really suggest to go and have a chat with her before signing any contracts, she has over 10 years experience in the field and could potentially save you a lot of problems (and tears)!

Talking of ULet, all the rumors such as ‘they don’t have many properties as they are new’ are a bunch of rubbish, pop in and look at the huge map on the wall with all the properties labeled! There are loads! Jane was saying that she didn’t run out of properties last academic year until the end of May! You all have plenty of time, so please do not rush! However, if you are the type of person, like me, who worries about this type of thing ULet have properties coming onto the market through November to February and if you want to get your hands on something soon, you can put down a holding deposit of only £200. This holds the property until January, and providing you are all still happy with it (and each other) you can then sign your contract! Giving you a couple more months to really decide if it is the right decision for you, and the others you are living with. Which is another point, according to a few students I have spoken with there are a few estate agents in the area charging you for a viewing – this is illegal. No estate agent can charge you to look at a property!

So please spend your time thinking wisely about whom you are going to live with, and the processes. Please do pop in and see Jane at ULet, like us promotional staff dotted around campus, she also doesn’t bite, and is full of amazing and very useful advice!

SU Blog 14- Reading Week Blues

So reading week is well under way and by this point you've probably realised that you could actually use it to do some reading. That being said, after all your hard work don't you think you deserve to relax this Friday night and escape those reading week blues? Here are just a few ideas as to how you can unwind this Friday:

1) Take a trip down to Medicine and kick back with your friends; no searching for a space in the library, no books, no work, just you and the Shisha. The only thoughts on your mind need be what flavour to choose!

2) Alternatively, if you fancy yourself to have the X Factor and want to display your talent to everyone then there's always the option of a karaoke night. Challenge your friends, make some memories, raise the roof; no one ever said you need to be able to sing...

3) Last but certainly not least in our list of suggestions, if 'winding down' at the end of the week means really letting your hair down to you then we'll be seeing you at the SU! Escape from your mid-week stress this Friday and join the party with all the newest big hits till 3am. Don't forget to try your luck on the wheel of fortune either, you never know what you might get...

Hopefully you had a productive Reading Week and really deserve this Friday night and if you didn't, well, best to enjoy yourself before the work begins again next week ;)

Stressbusters Exam season is upon us and whether you're cramming in the library or hitting the books at home it can be a stressful time for many students. With this in mind the SU is running a Stressbusters campaign. We've teamed up with RHULSport and the Student Life team to help you relax! Volunteer Week 2014

Volunteering Week 2014 takes place at the start of June, which will be Royal Holloway's ninth annual week as part of national Volunteers' Week which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. As most exams and coursework deadlines are over, why not do something worthwhile whilst having fun in the sunshine? Last year 300 students contributed 1500 hours to serving the local community. Community Action works in partnership with the Students' Union, RHUL Sport, and local organisations to offer a huge range of projects for students to get involved with. This year we hope to reach 30 projects completed during the week. Sign up now to be involved, or if you are part of a club or society then why not get your whole group involved.

Speed Housemating

We’re also running another speed housemating event, so if you’re looking for like minded people to live with next year and you like free pizza, come to Rialto to check it out!

Summer Ball Ticket Sales Day Every year Summer Ball ticket sales day is a crazy one at the union, this year we're ramping it up even more by throwing a BBQ, funfair rides, popcorn and more. Insanity Radio and RhubarbTV will be there covering the day and if you are lucky, you could be the winner of a free ticket as six will be given out throughout the day!

Blowout

It's the end of term and as is customary, the SU throws one huge party to make sure the term goes out with a bang. With live music and free easter eggs for the first 400 people, it's a night not to be missed!

Next term the ASC are giving away free Survival Parcels this year to help people with exam stress. To send one to a mate who might be stressing out, email in to ([email protected]) with who you would like the survival parcel to be delivered to. There is a postcard inside the package so you can write them a little note if you are so inclined! They're free, but we've only got 100 of them so send in your emails during easter and at the start of next term!

SU Blog 7 - Change Your Union!

Hello folks, the winds of change are upon SURHUL, Elections just around the bend and we’re announcing that we’re currently in the first stages of redesigning the website!

With this in mind we wanted to get your ideas on how we can improve the website, what functions you as members need to website to perform and if you can think of any cool additions we can make to ensure the hub of SURHUL online is the very best it can be!

If you have suggestions you can email in to the nice folks in marketing by [email protected] with suggestions, idea and example of content and design that you think would improve our site.

We’re also running a working group for people interesting in being part of the process of redesigning the site, again [email protected] is the email to send in applications to be on the working group and be an active part of shaping SURHUL’s presence online!

A time to change and a time to party!

Time to change pledge:

25th February, 2014), the SU will be launched a ‘Time to Change’ pledge alongside the Support and Advisory department of the College. Time to Change is an initiative set up by several mental health charities that encourages organisations to sign pledges that outline how they’ll tackle the stigma attached to mental health.

Also a quick reminder that for out of hours support you can always contact London Nightline

London Nightline is a confidential listening, support and practical information service for students in London. We are open from 6pm to 8am every night of term.

You can talk to them about anything - big or small - in complete confidence. They won't judge you or tell you how to run your life: they simply listen to whatever is on your mind.

All the volunteers are students themselves, who have undergone extensive training and who understand that university life in London isn't always plain sailing.

For someone to talk to, call them on 0207 631 0101 between 6pm and 8am every night of term or email them now at [email protected] or you can call them on Skype simply click 'Add contact' at the top of the Skype box. Enter the username londonnightline and click 'add selected contact’. Then click the green phone icon to call them - it's as simple as that!

Puppy Therapy

Also if you’re feeling stressed the next puppy therapy is on the 20th March from 10AM-12PM so get yourself down to the Union to meet the mutts!

New Orbital

The latest issue of The Orbital is out and available in the SU reception as well as some places around campus, so pick one up!

Speed Housemating

We’re holding a Speed Housemating event in rialto on the 10th March from 5-7PM so you can come down and meet like-minded people to live with next year! (and there will be free pizza!)

Insanniversary

Don't forget this Saturday is Insanity Radio's 2nd FM Birthday celebrations, come down to Medicine on Friday for an extra special Antidote with live music and DJs down in Stumble Inn, you'd be mad not to!
