i think there are MULTIPLE REASONS why rantaro could count as ultimate survivor .
for one -- he has survived every potential death that has occurred in his life . some examples : he might have narrowly managed to survive a fatal car accident , a hostage situation , extreme medical injuries like being shot multiple times or been badly beaten , etc . or maybe , he just managed to conveniently slip away or avoid it in all .
i would like to think that rantaro has a fantastic healing rate aka his injuries heal considerably quicker than the average duration of the healing process . a scratch ? gone by tomorrow . sickness ? usually never happens or clears up pretty quick . broken bones ? a few days . ( this idea was inspired by zen from mystic messenger , who also has this as a trait . )
secondly -- from my self promo quote , is that rantaro has been thru the motion of people walking all over him and take him for granted because of his portrayed kindness . similarly to how people allow people to borrow their pencils , pens or erasers , some people do not return it ... just like how people in his past has not given back the pieces of him he entrusted them with . basically , what i’m saying , is that he survived from giving off so many pieces of himself that he is incomplete and yet , still functioning .
third -- of course , his composed and logical side plays a part . while everyone in the game panics and descends into chaos , he is the one who interrogates monokuma calmly yet coldly . even though he among others are in a dangerous situation , that he or someone else could die at any given time , he remains composed and calm . though , this does not erase that perhaps rantaro is only concealing the panic or anxiety he is feeling , etc .
fourth -- abuse . this relates to the second , i do not think it would be from his family , but just general people he would refer to as ‘ acquaintances . ‘ BULLYING you might call it ... he was in a prison school so i mean , it’s likely that excessive bullying and abuse is there . there are a lot of factors that could contribute to this reason : his fluidity in gender , his sexuality , his appearance , his title as a survivor ( yea , it doesn’t sound so interesting he admits ) , etc .
in japan , there is no law against homosexuality or LGBT but also no law against discrimination of sexual orientation or identity . subjects of gender and sexuality are portrayed as comedic reliefs , stereotypical kinds you would see everywhere and be joked about . while it has strengthened the country , the atmosphere is still UNCOMFORTABLE for most to come out . though really , it depends of what part in japan you are in .
it would make sense for people to make fun of rantaro’s appearance . he does appear feminine with being skilled with nail polish , long lashes , odd hair , a pretty face , etc . of course , it may stem from jealousy about how attractive he is . being the only boy in a family mostly full of females or female - aligned people could be an influence . since he learned how to do nail art , i would imagine his sisters also taught him make - up or forced him to take hold of the hobby .
i actually like to think that rantaro’s hair was longer than it is before but not exceptionally long that he would appear more androgynous . he most likely cut it off himself due to how unsymmetrical and uneven his hair is .
i do think that bullying would be from verbal or psychological abuse ( degrading comments , public humiliation , stalking , gaslighting , etc . ) to the extent of being physical . for examples : pushing into lockers , full out fist fights , dunking his head into a toilet , etc . these kinds of things i would imagine have hardened him .
... and i diverged off of topic . whoopsie . BUT YEAH , there are more reasons , but these are the main ones i could think of right off the bat . they might not be canon , but i would like to think there are many contributing factors to his title as a survivor .
