Friedrich smiled politely ❝I've spent much time in london, my aunt and uncle lived there, as well as most of my cousins. I tend to travel there for the social season, because that seems to be the best time❞ she was not familiar with his family lineage, she may not be aware that his aunt and uncle were the king and queen of England 

There was something quite interesting behind Ms Catherine's eyes. He wasn't quite sure what, since he was never that graceful with young ladies. Most of the time he could just get by on the fact that he was a prince, but he often found himself fubbing when it was just a normal conversation 

The fact that she did not seem to be taken back by his name, gave him a little bit of excitement. Of course he was dressed better than some, being a prince, but there were some dukes and even by counts who had just as much money as the crown, and therefore they dressed as well as him. She could just be being coy, and since he was not good at reading people, that was probably what it was. 

❝I will be more than happy to give you all the information you desire about monday, but I must admit, I'm actually heading there myself by week end.❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine listened with attentiveness, the explanation answering one question while giving rise to several others. that he should spend so much time in london despite clearly belonging to prussia struck her as rather curious. family alone? perhaps. or perhaps there were other motives that propriety forbade her from inquiring about. whatever the reason, it was hardly her place to pry into the affairs of a gentleman she had only just met.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"then i shall consider myself fortunate indeed," she replied with an easy smile. "there are few things more valuable to a traveler than advice from someone who knows a city well."

⠀⠀⠀⠀her gaze drifted briefly toward the direction of the inn's courtyard, where the stable hands were no doubt still tending to the exhausted horses. "though i fear we may not have sufficient time for such an extensive conversation today. i imagine my party will continue our journey as soon as the horses have recovered from the road." perhaps they even switch the horses so they can continue the journey faster.

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine returned her attention to him. "if fortune is kind, however, our paths may cross again before long. i, too, shall be in london for the social season." the faintest smile lingered at the corners of her mouth. "it would seem a considerably more suitable setting for discussing the city than a brief pause between stages of a journey." || @dynastymuses

Sophie was trying to figure out what to say. It was unusual that they wouldn't take her with him, so she had to think of something and something fast. ❝he has been remarried, and the new wife she was not particularly fond of me. So when they moved, she decided not to take me with them❞ Sophie hated lying, but house was she supposed to get work? Besides, there was some truth to it. It just wasn't the whole truth. 

Sophie wanted to say that she had done the work of at least four by herself, sometimes more, but that would just make it even more shocking that their employer would not take her with them. She had no doubt that this woman would cast her aside the second she knew, especially if she heard from anyone about what her stepmother had been lying about. 

Sophie nodded and said ❝it is a sign of disrespect, and most would not want to be disrespected, even once❞ why was she giving her a way out? Why was she letting this woman decide not to hire her? 

Sophie nodded quickly ❝of course Miss Pierce, it will never happen again.❞

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine listened without interruption, though the explanation did little to soften the thoughtful look settling across her features. one gloved finger rested lightly against the handle of her parasol as she regarded sophie for another moment. it was peculiar because experienced household staff are rather difficult to come by. dismissing someone who already knows the routines of a home is rarely the practical decision. although, households are not always governed by practicality.

⠀⠀⠀⠀there was the faintest trace of knowing amusement in her eyes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"new wives have been known to object to more than silverware and furniture. occasionally, they object to certain members of the staff as well." she spoke lightly, almost conversationally. "particularly if they imagine... attachments where perhaps none exist." whether she believed that to be the case here remained entirely unclear.

⠀⠀⠀⠀the subject was allowed to fall away just as effortlessly as it had been introduced. "fortunately for you, i do not make a habit of condemning people over a single mistake. provided, of course, that it remains a single mistake. all i require is that you remember my name correctly from now on."

⠀⠀⠀⠀a beat of silence followed before one brow lifted ever so slightly. "unless, of course..." she said smoothly, "you have already decided that you would rather not accept a position within my household after all?" || @dynastymuses

Elena blinked twice at the sight in front of her, this was no hallucination, and it certainly wasn't a mirror. She wore the same exact face as Elena, she was the mysterious woman in stefan's picture. It was her, katherine.

When elena tried let the words out, it was like her heart stopped for a second, the air felt heavy, her lungs felt tight. She was nervous, scared.

H-h-hello, you must katherine, I'd like to talk to you for a moment. Is that okay?

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine regarded her doppelgänger in silence for a long moment. it was, admittedly, a little surreal finally standing face to face with the girl whose life she had observed from the shadows more than once. she had not planned to meet her yet but well, seems like plans have to change.

⠀⠀⠀⠀one brow rose as the other woman's voice caught over itself. "well, i certainly hope you're not always this nervous." her head tilted ever so slightly, studying the familiar face that was, paradoxically, entirely its own person.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"yes." she answered without hesitation. "i'm katherine. which means you must be elena." there was no surprise in the observation. if anything, it sounded like the confirmation of something she had known long before this meeting. again, she had been informed.

⠀⠀⠀⠀her gaze lingered for another second before folding her arms loosely across her chest. "now..." the amusement in her expression became just a touch more pronounced. "what exactly is it that you want from me? because i have to admit..." she let the sentence hang deliberately for a heartbeat. "i wasn't expecting my first conversation with my doppelgänger to begin with stammering."

she doesn't want to challenge katherine, she just wants to figure out what she knows. & yeah, it may be hard for her to get answers but someone has to try. the group would surely have better luck if stefan was the one asking ... but he's busy being the hero as he always is. so, here was velma, putting on her detective hat. her eyes narrow, almost to a squint while arms fold over her chest. " you don't owe us anything. but i know you also want stefan's attention, affection or whatever it is you're calling it these days. " she raises a brow, almost certain the mention of him will get a reaction. " and no, you're not. but we both know you're sticking around for something you're not mentioning. "

sometimes talking to katherine is like pulling teeth. you never know what's the truth, a half - truth or a lie. velma could admit she was smart when it came to her survival & giving out or withholding what she wanted you to know. " well, you haven't given us many reasons to listen to you without questioning motive or truths, have you ? "

it would be normal for elena to need to be protected, she's the only human here. but the way katherine had told damon she needs to be protected for being the doppelganger rose questions in them all. sirens immediately went off in velma's head. what was so special about her being the doppelganger ? who did she need to be protected from ? maybe that was the better question. " okay, maybe a better question is who does she need protecting from ? cause you seem to want her alive for some reason. i can only imagine why. "

⠀⠀⠀⠀"well..." katherine admitted without the slightest embarrassment, "you are correct about one thing. i would very much enjoy having stefan's attention." her gaze remained fixed on velma. "his affection would certainly be preferable." then, she offered a little shrug. "unfortunately for you, however, it is not stefan asking the questions."

⠀⠀⠀⠀katherine's expression remained almost innocent, though there was unmistakable implication beneath it. "who knows?" she mused lightly. "perhaps i might be considerably more inclined to share whatever knowledge i possess if he were the one asking... and if he proved willing to earn it." the smile lingering on her lips made it abundantly clear precisely what she meant by that.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"a doppelgänger has never enjoyed a particularly uncomplicated existence, velma." her tone remained calm, almost conversational. "history has a rather unfortunate habit of repeating itself around us." katherine is aware that velma would have no idea what she meant exactly by said. how could she? katherine's story (and past life) is not known to them, and it's something not even stefan knows (the opportunity has never arisen).

⠀⠀⠀⠀in addition, katherine also didn't consider it wise yet to tell them who is coming for them, if she did, she has to suspect that this little friend group would spend the next several nights sleeping even less than they already did. furthermore, katherine also didn't want to risk gaining the mikaelsons interest before everything was prepared. || @dropsglasses

Katherine was right, yet Stefan would never admit it to her. He did love her, deeply so. And maybe, yeah, maybe some part of him still did, but there was so much resentment built up inside him over everything that happened between them. The things she did once Elena appeared in his life, the constant games and sneaking around, always showing up just to drag him back into something he wanted to leave behind.

Katherine, back when he was human, seemed so… pure to Stefan. She was the woman he snuck into her chambers to see at night, the one he chased around the courtyard with only smiles and laughter. The Katherine standing in front of him now seemed... cold and cruel. Nothing like the woman he once believed he would spend forever with.

Or maybe she was always like this and Stefan only saw what he wanted to see.

At the mention of what he did to Damon, Stefan visibly winced as the memory came rushing back to the surface. It wasn't one of his proudest moments. That whole night, the chaos over Katherine, being shot by his own father, waking up in transition and Damon refusing to complete it. Stefan forcing him to feed because he couldn't stand the thought of facing eternity alone. That whole week was all something he wished he could forget.

"Okay, Katherine." Stefan sighed as he rolled his head and his eyes toward the ceiling before looking back at her. There was no point in beating the dead horse over this, they've both said their parts more than their fair share and neither side was ever going to give in.

"Then why are you here?" He questioned. "To remind me that I loved you in hopes something changes? Or did you just come here to remind me that I loved you and trusted you. Because look at what all that has gotten me."

⠀⠀⠀⠀for a long moment, katherine simply looked at him. it was not anger that settled across her face this time, it was disappointment.

⠀⠀⠀⠀not because he disagreed with her, she had expected that, but because he had let every question fall to the floor unanswered. she had hoped, perhaps foolishly, that he would pause long enough to truly examine that night. to question it. to consider that the story he had repeated to himself for over a century might not have been as simple as he wanted it to be.

⠀⠀⠀⠀instead... he had simply stepped around it.

⠀⠀⠀⠀her shoulders lowered almost imperceptibly. "i was hoping," she admitted quietly, "that you would actually think about what i said." her eyes never left his.

⠀⠀⠀⠀"that you would ask yourself those questions instead of pretending they do not matter." a faint breath escaped her; perhaps she expected too much.

⠀⠀⠀⠀silence lingered for another heartbeat before she answered the question he had actually asked. "why am i here?" the words came softer now. "because i still love you."

⠀⠀⠀⠀"i have loved you for a very long time, stefan." her voice remained calm despite the vulnerability behind it. "and i suspect i always will."

⠀⠀⠀⠀her gaze dipped only briefly before returning to him. "do i hope that one day you might feel something for me again?" a sad smile appeared. this was the kind of unreturned love that hurt because it meant something to her

⠀⠀⠀⠀"yes. i would be lying if i claimed otherwise, but that is not truly why i came. what i want...  is for you to stop looking at me as though i am the devil responsible for every tragedy in your life."
