“Happy birthday, Katerina.”
Klaus came up behind her, arms sliding around her waist and his palms went flat against her stomach. His mouth brushed close to her ear, voice low as he whispered, “Here’s to many, many… many more years together.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀katerina startled softly at the sudden warmth behind her, her breath catching for the briefest moment before recognition settled the surprise. almost instantly, color rose to her cheeks. even now she had not entirely grown accustomed to such closeness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀not because she disliked it; quite the opposite. that perhaps was precisely the problem.
⠀⠀⠀⠀a shy smile found its way onto her lips as she lowered her gaze for a moment, suddenly very aware of the arm around her waist and the warmth of his hands resting against her stomach.
⠀⠀⠀⠀it was improper. at least a little. and yet she found herself laughing quietly nonetheless. one of her hands lifted, settling gently atop his. "many, many more years?" she repeated softly, amusement threading through her voice. the smile remained, warm & hopeful. the kind of smile belonging to someone who still believed the future held wonderful things.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"that is quite an ambitious wish." her fingers curled slightly against his hand. again, improper. she shouldn't be doing this. should have learned from past mistakes. "though i confess... it is a pleasant one."
⠀⠀⠀⠀for perhaps the first time in a very long while, life felt as though it might finally be moving in the right direction. the uncertainty that had haunted so much of her life seemed further away these days. there was still fear, still caution. some wounds (and memories) did not disappear so easily.
⠀⠀⠀⠀but there was hope as well. and hope was a dangerous thing for someone like katerina, because she tended to get lost in it. slowly, she turned her head just enough that her smile could be seen more clearly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀"thank you. you have already made this birthday a very happy one." because she had hope. he loved her and they would marry. she would no longer be a 'disgrace', she could be proud of herself and what she achieved because she didn't give up and made the best out of her situation. || @bloodpsalm
