There are many different types of teaching methods. There are a few examples that are common such as teacher-centered method, learner-centered method and interactive/participative method but there is an inquisitive method that caught my attention and that is the flipped classroom methodology. This method is a student-centered method and typically is a high-tech approach.
This method was implemented by two science teachers, Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, at a small Colorado high school where they were originally considered as a pre- broadcasting. Yet it became known as the flipped classroom and more schools are following this concept of teaching. I notice that some professors at Gallaudet University are using this method too. The purpose of using this method is to free up time in the classroom for engaged learning and have the students watch the pre- recorded videos at the comforts of their homes in their own time. This method would afford the teacher and students to work together on class assignments, learning exercises, projects, discussions and some difficult tasks that may need to be tackled during the face-to-face time.
The several advantages of having this method is giving the students more control, student-centered learning and access to lessons as long as there are effective technology readily available. Not only that, the parents would have access to see what their children are learning online. On the other side of this method is that there may be some students who would be less motivated than others and this learning style might not be effective for them. It might create a divide between the teacher and their students in regards to the amount of screen time instead of physically interacting with people. Even though, it may mean more time for teachers to prepare ahead of time in order to have the students engage in this type of teaching, it is rewarding for the teachers to get to know their students more during face-to-time time instead of lecturing in front of the students in classrooms.

Interactive Activity
While the students benefit from participating in interactive activities, there are various ways of keeping them entertained while they learn. Interactive activity is considered as a social-centered process where the students are able to boost motivation and stimulate each other to learn together. Now with growth of personal computing and the internet in our lives, we have to think out of the box and become more creative while we teach in our classrooms. A good example is an app called, “Kahoots! It” which is a game-based learning platform.
This game-based learning platform gives the students an opportunity to interact with each other through technology in the classroom. It is easy to create, share and play learning games and almost guaranteed to unleash the fun in the classrooms! Teachers can develop their own trivia quizzes and even, add videos such as demonstrating the signs for the learning games. Imagine the fun that would bring to the classrooms!
(I give this credit to Ida Wilding who shared with me this method of learning that she used for her teaching)

Class Management
Effective class management is critical for every college teacher to possess as one of strong skills. While it doesn’t happen overnight, it is a skill that the teachers acquire and hone over time. The class management is a way of keeping the students engaged in their learning process without distractions or disruptive behavior in the classroom.
In order to have classroom management skills, the teacher would need to have the patience, knowledge, time-management and organization. In addition, syllabus is a wonderful classroom management tool that sets clear the expectations for students’ learning outcomes, deadlines, grading, late assignments and assessment. This approach would assist the teacher communicate clearly with the students in order to motivate the learners and create a safe environment for everyone involved.

My Teaching Strategy
During my practicum, I learned about a few teaching strategies to be used in the classroom. One of those successful strategies I notice is that the students enjoy having interactive activities during the class in pairs. These activities give the students an opportunity to provide feedback to each other in a safe learning environment where they feel motivated to bring the best out of each other.
During these interactive activities, it gives the teacher an opportunity to assess students’ signing skills and provide the modeling to show them, the visual learners how to sign the right form before moving on to the next pair of students. The students seem to learn more effectively from working together while building their communication skills and second language, ASL.
