EHW: “Hi I'm Evelyn and I perform as Experimental Housewife. Glad to be asked to share some of my favorite tunes here on SutroFM. Here's a look into what I've been vibing on lately. Some of it is very recent, and some of it is material I’ve been watching closely in the last few years. The main things I personally search for in music include drivenness, consistency, and depth. As a DJ I like to keep it wild and hypnotic, so I always select tracks or combinations of tracks that help me fulfill that mission. This list showcases that variety pretty well.”

1. Daniela La Luz "Counting Days" [Housewax] 2016

EHW: “I discovered La Luz last year and I’ve become a steady fan. Her drums are so dope, and her spiritedness in each song, with her little vocal snippets, are fun and appeasing to the authentic listener. She has her own grooving, idiosyncratic style despite her comparability to Cassy, who I also have gotten into in recent years. Where La Luz kills it for me though is with her hits of pretty lead synth/pad here and there -- always a weakness of mine. Really looking forward to her upcoming releases.”

2. Gilmer Galibard "Brain Poacher" [Lobster Theremin] 2015

EHW: “This record hasn’t left my bag in about three years. I grabbed it right when it came out, and I've been very closely following Galibard since then. I love the intensity and angularity of his productions. Some of his shit is so crazy, it’s almost flat out scary. He hasn’t put out a record in several years but he has been posting dope, crazy tracks on his Soundcloud. “Brain Poacher” is absolutely an apt title of his LT release. It’s a scathing 4-track techno EP, full of sharp metallic percussion and insane layers. It melts your mind in a way that forces you to pay attention. It’s just all really crazy shit.”

3. Aleks "Ground Control" [Deeptrax] 2018

LISTEN

EHW: “I have all of this guy's records. I discovered him in late 2015 and I have been preordering his new records as they appear. I'd definitely award him a "prolific" badge. Dubby, often lo-fi, always deep af. I like this stuff so much it's hard for me to find the proper place for it in my DJ sets; I could just play a little set full of his tracks only. His latest 12” has a serious banger, a track that's a clear departure into a new realm for him. The other three tracks are more so his typical groove. If you want to check out more of his lo-fi, ambient works, I recommend his Shimmering Moods album or “Different Stories” on Hesperian Sound Division.”

4. Cherushii & Maria Minerva [100% Silk] 2019

EHW: “Brand new! These two incredible producers happen to be two of my dearest friends -- members of my wedding party, in fact. I'm so happy to see this project completed. It is a typical display of Cherushii's brilliance around pop constructions and wonderful melodies. Maria's lyrics likewise display her typical musicianship, with curious storytelling and the right amount of relatable lamentation. I always say Cherushii tracks are so full, they’re like complete albums in and of themselves. To take this quality and add Maria's touch to it -- and talent from other dear friends determined to make sure the record gets made -- you get an inexpressibly special sonic experience, a record that should feel like gold in your hands. I remember Chelsea telling me that she and Maria were finally collaborating for a Silk 12", and I knew then it was going to be delicious. I remember saying to her, "Well, finally. That makes too much sense."”

5. Will Ward "DETOUR004" [Detour Pittsburgh] 2016

EHW: “Had a really hard time deciding what gets this last slot, but I’m happy to go with this jam. Just grabbed it in January. I don't know much about the producer, but he's got a few solid EPs out on New Rhythmic, Joton's very busy techno label. Ward maintains a metallic canopy, similar to what I like about Gilmer Galibard's material. But Ward wants to stick more so to progressive density for floor-moving purposes. He ventures with much refinement into the dub-scape while sprinkling emotive poignancy on top of the relentless drums. Detour did a good deed by putting this record out. I have several of their plates at this point and follow them closely as they are excellent selectors. Diving into this 12" was the final persuasive point around how I feel about them: fucking great.”

Tooth: “Hey I’m Mike Lehman aka Tooth, a DJ, promoter, and extremely hidden away bedroom beat maker who hails from and resides in Sacramento.  I’m sure like most of you reading this, I try to find music appropriate for just about any time or situation in my life, and I spend as much time doing it as any other activity I can think of, other than work (but I have my doubts). I hope these 5 tracks that are heavily frequented in my rotation might make a small dent in yours 😊”

1.  Stubb - Love Not Sex (Mori Ra former_airline Texas Hitters Remix) 

Tooth: “Let’s start things off psychedelic and downtempo, with this edit by none other than Mori Ra, an Osaka based producer and DJ who is widely known for his edits, disco cuts and DJ sets at Berlin’s legendary Cocktail D’Amour.  This one is out on Paper Recordings with a killer original and Leca remix on the B side. Available at most large online sellers as I just received it from Redeye.”

2. Paradise 3001 - Blue Lava

Tooth: “I’m constantly looking for new fresh meditative music which can serve simply as letting me close my eyes and feel like I’m drifting away to someplace else. This track does exactly that and comes on a bizarre and awesome old compilation from 1994 on Dutch label Sun Music. The artist, Paradise 3001, has several dreamy chuggers, replete with field recorded nature samples.  He combines them all into this one release, with a few of the tracks feeling very ahead of their time with how well they stand up and sound to this day.  This track in particular “Blue Lava” gives a nice floating sensation, all with a sound like that found on modern labels such as NAFF and Pacific Rhythm.  This comp and track were only released on CD, but the good news is it’s available to stream on Spotify.  Kick the feet up, close your eyes and give this one a few rotations 😊“

3. Iconic Black Suit - ASSid

Tooth: “Next let’s go into the acidic sphere with this track I dug up a while back on bandcamp.  The track is called “ASSid” by Iconic Black Suit.  This was put out on an all-acid compilation by Cave Rave Recordings in Denver.  I suggest checking out the whole comp, but this track particularly stuck out to me with its hypnotizing acid line and rhythm.  Feel like I could dance to this one on loop for hours.“

4. WAVEGUIDE - Venera EP

Tooth: “ WAVEGUIDE is a Japanese label created by DJ/Producer Stereociti.  Found this record at a shop in Tokyo and felt it characterized a lot of the very interesting techno I stumbled upon at various parties during my stay.  This is only the 2nd release on the label but seems to be one to watch as it appears to be available at most of the large online retailers making shipping affordable.  All 4 tracks are unique in their own way, sticking with a minimal type of sound and texture throughout.”

5. Armando - Dont Take It (Johnny Fiasco Mix)

Tooth: “Going a back a bit, this track has been a favorite of mine lately.  Originally produced by acid master Armando in 1988, this was finally released almost 30 years later in 2007 with a wonderfully stabbing remix by Johnny Fiasco.  As is the case with many of these rare presses, the market price for the record is high, but it is available digitally for your club needs.”

Rodney is an SF based selector and resident DJ of the They’re Here collective.  He is known for his ‘peak time’ all-vinyl DJ sets that include some the finest acid techno and energetic house records.  Today he shares with us 5 records that rarely leave his bag.  

Rodney: “Hi my name is Rodney. I’m originally from Tehran, Iran. I started collecting records shortly after moving to the Bay Area and here are 5 records that I enjoy playing that’ve been special to me over the years in different settings. Imma say it less n hope you enjoy em.”

1. Frankie Knuckles - “Baby wants to ride”

Rodney: “Timeless would be the word to truly describe this one. It’s one of those records that can be played at any time at any kind of party and gets people moving. One of the all-time classics and if you listen closely on the 6:58-7:00 in it says “Rodney, Wake up!” which gives even more of a reason for me to have a special connection with this one. Heard that part when I was dancing at a warehouse party and thought I was hearing voices. Therapy is expensive.”

2. Gemini - “Rapid eye movement”

Rodney: “Gemini is one of my favorite producers of all time! It’s very hard to choose which Gemini track is my favorite but this one is definitely up there with the rest of them as it has the elements of his true signature sound. Gotta thank sir Tyrel Williams for turning me on to Gemini’s music.“

3. Billy nightmare - “Is this the life for me”

Rodney: “Again, digging deep in to the Chicago vault, this track is on Mystic Bill’s debut release as Billy Nightmare that was recently reissued on Dark Entries called ‘Reality Check’. I could say it’s one of those that you hear, and you can’t believe when it was actually made. Way ahead of the curve! Wouldn’t put it passed a producer on the ranks of Mystic Bill honestly.”

Rodney: “Sound track to many nights :) remember when I first had a proper listen to this one when I was driving down to San Diego. Had a lot of memories with this record ever since too. In the PM of course ;)”

5. Der Zyklus - “Polar Coordinates”

Rodney: “Definitely one of the best albums out there by Der Zyklus. Definitely a good one to close your eyes listen through all the way through and get lost in the music. Minimal skeletal structures and a very solid compilation of dark experimental tunes by the one and only Gerald Donald.”

1. Annie Anxiety - “Cyanide Tears” [Crass Records] 1981 (incld. Black Lodge Radio Episode 1)

Kosmik: “Crass and everything on Crass Records transformed my views on music and politics while I was in middle/high-school. Their influence on who I am today cannot be overstated. An this EP, in particular, still blows my mind to this day. Experimental anarchist music way way ahead of its time.”

2. Robert Hood ‎– “Sterno-Mastoid” [M-Plant] 1997 (Incl. Black Lodge Radio Episode 3)

Kosmik: “Robert Hood is, in my opinion, one of the greatest producers of all time. We booked him a number of times in the late 90’s-early 2000’s, and to this day a live set he once did for us may be the greatest live set I have ever seen in my life. His early productions defined minimal techno - a sound that was so raw and was imbued with so much soul and emotion, a great contrast to what most people label “minimal techno” these days. This track takes me places.”

Kosmik: “Everyone and everything related to The Dirty Criminals and their myriad projects has forever shaped my own vision of sound. No group of producers and Dj’s has influenced me more than this bunch of lunatics. Period. The definition of true acid.”

5. Sueño Sueño - Und Sie Bewegt Sich Doch (Incld. Black Lodge Radio Episode 10)

Kosmik: “This was a track originally released in 1983 but re-released on a various artists comp last year called “The Acceptable Presence Pt. 2” on Light Sounds Dark (LSD022). It’s insane and I love it.”

Kosmik is a LA-based DJ/producer/promotor and founder of The Black Lodge, schooled in the early 90’s punk and electronic/rave scene in the midwest, somewhere between Chicago and Detroit. He has released on Black Lodge Recordings as well as Slaying Medusa as a part of the Optimistic Misanthropes project.

Once a programmer on the famed KALX 90.7FM, DJ Patrick is an Oakland-based disc jockey with deep crates and a preference for off-kilter house and disco obscurities. He is a co-founder and resident DJ of the Brouhaha collective, and creative director of the fledging Fault Radio.

1. Dreamscape - Jasmine’s Dream

DJP: “Deep house of the highest order. Produced by Ed Marshall and released in 1995, this instant classic features playful keys, a rolling bassline, and the most incredible atmosphere. As the track unfolds, a female voice recites mantras to send dancers into a dreamlike spiral. It’s no wonder prices for this obscurity skyrocketed in the past year. Luckily, the folks over at World Building have rereleased this tune plus a couple others from Ed on separate EPs into one essential compilation. Don’t sleep on it!”

2. Innershades - Love At First Sight

DJP: “Big fan of Innershades since hearing their releases on Creme Organization. This one oddly enough is on Defected from a compilation selected by none other than DJ Haus, the head honcho behind Unknown to the Unknown. I believe that’s the kind of bizarre pairing that brings out the best in electronic music, and so here were left to enjoy such fruits. A soaring, Knuckles-esque roller that’s bonafide heart sweller.”

DJP: “Boogie slash synth-funk bordering into the protohouse zone. From 1983. The groove on this 6 minuter could last forever, so I get where they’re coming from with the song title.”

4. Raymond Castoldi - Condensation

DJP: “Kalahari Oyster Cult was on fire this year. My bandcamp purchase history will back me up on this. They occasionally will release records only on vinyl, and this compilation of Raymond Castoldi’s work is one of them. It’s a favor to all the collectors since purchasing all of the originals would set you back several hundreds of dollars. Worth every penny though. Here’s the little blurb the Oyster Cult wrote on their bandcamp about this release:

“Although people primarily know Castoldi for being the music director and organist in Madison Square Garden, he also has a lesser known chapter of his life. In the early 1990s, Raymond released 6 EPs on his imprint X-Ray Records. By coupling his musical education with a four-on-the-floor club pattern, Castoldi managed to create a jazzy vibe with spacious sounds and keyboard jams, all coalescing into a relaxing atmosphere that would eventually become the signature sound of 90’s deep house.””

DJP: “This one’s from a friend out in Paris! Nice five tracker EP with a solid range of tunes. A1 entitled Dinguzer is an epic riser meant to be used at the peak of a night. On the other end of the energy spectrum is 49 RDC (epoque poly) B3. a simple percussive exercise, almost electro-like in nature, that sits alongside lovely, serene ambiance.”

S: “This is a semi-cheesy house track that hits every soft spot in my heart. The sample and the overall feel of the song reminds me of some of the first really deep house tracks that got me hooked when I first moved to San Francisco, at a time when remnants of the soul of the city were still around. Day time block parties, crushes on hip girls, and everything else.”

S: “I finally discovered this track recently after hearing it a couple times before and always wondering what it was. The feeling of finally (and randomly) finding it was overpowering. This is one of those tracks that makes you realize the type of pure soul that electronic tracks can derive just like any other classic band tune. Also, it was released in 1985 :O”

MC: "Hey what’s up. My name is Michael Claus, I’m a Bay Area based musician / DJ and the founder of SutroFM.net and Silva Electronics.  I’ve gotten together a list of my 5 favorite tracks that I have recently been playing out and listening to at home.  Hope you enjoy!”

1. Donato Dozzy - Vetta Reprise

MC: “I’ve been playing Donato Dozzy’s 'Filo Loves The Acid’ album pretty much constantly since it came out on Tresor Records in early August.  If you’re into the harder and ravey-er side of acid techno, then this album is definitely for you.  It’s tough to pick a favorite because the entire album is incredible, but I think I like Vetta Reprise best.”

2. Monolake - Cyan 1

MC:  “I recently discovered this one even though it was original released on Basic Channel’s “Chain Reaction” label back in 1996.  Monolake consists of Robert Henke and Gerhard Behles.  They created Ableton Live and are major pioneers of forward thinking music technology.  Huge inspirations!  Henke talks about how he and Behles made this track during his recent Red Bull Music Academy talk in Berlin.  Apparently they made the bass line by pitching down a recording they took of a mosquito buzzing.  Pretty dope!  I highly recommend checking out their RBMA talk, it’s super interesting.”  Click here to check it out.

3. Caldera - Old Hands

MC: “I first met Caldera a couple years back through a compilation that we both had tracks on for the label Neo Violence (Prague).  He’s an incredibly talented producer with a unique style I’d describe as a sort of a tripped out take of the broken beats genre mixed with some seriously hazy house and techno elements but better!  ‘Old Hands’ is my favorite track from his new 12″ titled ‘13 17′ on BoogieBox Records.  The entire record is awesome and highly recommended.  I also released some of his music on my label Silva Electronics, so while you’re at it check out that release too.”

4. Garrett - Gotta Get Thru It

MC: “I first heard this track on Vinyl Dreams Radio with Infinite Jess on SutroFM and was immediately hooked!  I mean listen to it, seriously how could you not be down?  This track is off Garrett’s ‘Private Life II” album which was released in the past couple months of this year (not sure the exact date) on Music From Memory.  I think Vinyl Dreams still has a few copies, so if you’re in SF pick up a copy from their shop on Haight St.”

5. Russell E.L. Butler  - These Seeds

MC: “On this one, Russell does a fantastic job of layering some seriously heady synth work over a slowed down drum machine that keeps the track chugging along.  Total madness and an awesome listening experience!  It’s off their latest album ‘The Home I'd Build For Myself And All My Friends’ on the Bay Area based Left Hand Path Records.  Go out and cop the 12″ while you still can.  The entire release is cohesive, beautifully introspective at points and completely banging all around! I promise you it will sell out.”
