Thank you all for your continued support and enjoyment of this AU. Were very glad to have you all along for the ride as we try to figure it all out. (Or rather, as korri tries to clean up my mess :>)
Iāve really been meaning to address our absence.
Short answer: No
Long answer: were in a bit of a hiatus atm. Weāre all a little occupied in our own lives, (I personally am struggling with mental health and finishing school) however, that doesnāt mean by any stretch that this is over and finished. Wanted has always been a bit of a side project for fun, especially because we all have other things to be working on. With a lot of whatās been going on we all kinda just took a bit to work on our own stuff. As for the current state of things, Iām honestly unsure. Weāll be back eventually Iām sure, and Iām sorry for making yāall wait and just kinda dropping off without notice. I care for and appreciate everyone who enjoys what we have so far, so thank you again. I hope you understand.
Steven and Connie come across the scariest thing yet in their fugitive adventure⦠FOMO
ā
Happy Halloween! I needed some sweetness in my life due to some hard personal stuff Iām dealing with right now, so I wrote this to celebrate one of my favorite holidays. Times are weird and different right now, but please find ways to enjoy yourself safely <3
The two fugitives had finally made it through and out of the ever expansive desert about two weeks ago. Ducking in and out of small towns to avoid the government, they now found themselves in mid-Texoma. All the running and desert camping theyād been doing the last two months, October had snuck up right on the two teens. And before they knew it, it was TopsyTurvy.
Despite being literal, modern-day outlaws and all the trouble theyād run into, Connie made it a point to carve out ways for her and Steven to have fun together. They were two people in a miserable situation, but that didnāt mean that they themselves had to be. They just needed to be careful and, at this point, she figured Steven had suffered enough. Unfortunately, their last few attempts to have fun didnāt end up too well. The moments they shared together were joyous while they lasted! But⦠their last city excursion had resulted in Steven catching a fever from extreme stress.
Nursing someone back to health wasnāt particularly what Connie would call fun, either.
With all that, it was no wonder how TopsyTurvy Day snuck up on them.
An AU where instead of Steven keeping his feelings secret from the gems throughout Future, he actually tells them whatās going on pretty early on. How will this affect everything else that normally would happen in Future?
It was late at night. They had warped back late, as the sun was already gone below the horizon, but now, it had been hours later. The beautiful moonlight shone through Stevenās bedroom windows, painting his warm-colored room in cooler tones.
He laid down in bed, tucked under the covers. It was warm, warm enough that he was usually lulled to sleep by now, but tonight he just couldnāt, not after the Reef. Not after Volleyball.
It was... terrifying, to put it lightly. He, Pearl, and Pinkās original Pearl- nicknamed Volleyball- had gone to a gem location called the Reef to try and heal a crack on the pink pearlās face, but it had ended in horrible disaster. The crack was still there, and Steven had managed to successfully traumatize the poor gem again by unleashing a scream not unlike the one that had broken her in the first place. That had triggered the Reef to nearly rejuvenate her, along with his own guardian Pearl, and it was only their shared trauma over Pink that allowed them to break free, together.
How messed up was that?
Steven couldnāt stop thinking about it. If either of them had been standing closer to him, he could have seriously hurt them. Volleyballās crack might have worsened, she could have poofed or shattered (Oh, stars, he hoped that scream couldnāt shatter anyone), or worse! Then thereās Pearl herself. She could have gotten a crack just like Volleyās, extending down to cover her eye, or her mouth or throat, rendering her unable to speak even though she only just fully reclaimed her voice two years ago-
His thoughts were broken by the sound of heavy, yet careful footsteps climbing up the stairs to his bed. Steven closed his eyes quickly, allowing his chest to rise and fall much slower than he actually needed it to. The door creaked open, and he resisted the urge to hold his breath altogether.
āSteven,ā a soft voice called out. āI know youāre still awake.ā
Steven groaned, rolling over to sit up properly. He met Garnetās gaze tiredly. āāM that bad at faking it, huh?ā
āI wouldnāt say that,ā Garnet replied softly, the hint of a smile crossing her lips. Light flashed across her visor, cast down from the moonlight outside. Future vision.
She knew, then.
Steven looked down in shame, making the mental connection himself. āPearl told you all about it, then?ā
Garnet hummed in confirmation. She began to fully enter the room now, heading to sit down at the foot of his bed. āShe told me about the yell, and the two of them fusing together.ā
Steven didnāt meet her visor-covered gaze, instead focusing on a pattern in his wood floor. He tensed, waiting for her to continue before jumping to conclusions about why she was here. His first thought was that she was here to scold him, but knowing her, sheād more than likely wait until morning to do it, he was awake or not. But if not to scold, then what?
After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, Garnet placed a hand on his back, rubbing comfortingly. āI know that you have a lot of negative emotions towards Rose Quartz,ā she began, āand I wish there was something I could do to help you out. Iāve never heard of Rose ever having a scream like that, nor of even Pink Diamond herself. Your powers are tied to your emotions, so you must have been feeling something extreme.ā
Steven shifted uncomfortably. āYeah, I guess so...ā
Garnet tilted her head just a bit, moving her hand to lift his chin up to be level with her gaze. āDo you mind telling what it was?ā
The āso we can avoid that ever happening againā was left unsaid, but Steven felt its presence hanging in the air. And frankly, he agreed. He sighed, burying his face in his hands. ā...Anger, frustration, disappointment... I just-!ā He lifted his head back up, his hands balling into fists as he remembered that moment- the fury he felt at knowing more horrible things his mom did that hurt more people, meaning he had more issues to deal with. It was suffocating! āMom hurt her so badly,ā he started. āHe broke her, and then she was just handed off to White Diamond without ever fixing it! And Pearl was hurt by her too! It was them being hurt together that allowed them to escape being rejuvenated, which I guess is poetic, but still! Theyāre both hurt because of her, and Pearl admitted to never stop being hurt! I just...ā he trailed off.
Garnet seemed to understand. She moved her hand up to his head, petting his hair a bit. āYou were angry. We can work with that.ā She took the hand that had been on his back and now reached for his hand. āSteven, I know that Rose is... a sore spot for you. We can try to avoid it as much as possible, if you-ā
āNo, no itās fine,ā Steven grumbled. āYou donāt have to do that. It was my fault I lost control in the first place, not-ā
āSteven, Iām not blaming anyone for what happened,ā Garnet cut in. āI want to help you, and if Rose is a stressor for you, then let us take care of situations involving her from now on. Alright?ā
Steven finally looked up and met her eyes, or where they would be through her visor. His brows furrowed. āBut, I know that Mo- Rose is a sore spot for you guys, too,ā he insisted. āYou shouldnāt have to deal with it any more than I should.ā
āAnd I could say the same for you.ā Garnet pressed a few fingers to her visor, and it disappeared, leaving light twinkling away in its place for a second or so. Her three eyes met his, and in that moment, Steven felt like he was being examined under a microscope or something. Garnet knew something he didnāt, and was trying to prevent it from occurring. More outbursts, maybe? āI want you to know that we are still your guardians, and our job it to protect you,ā she insisted. āPlease, Steven- if something is troubling you, let us know and we will handle it. Alright?ā
Stevenās eyes flicked back and forth between her three, seeing the vulnerability in each of them. Garnet was worried, scared even, and just wanted to protect him. But, he wanted to protect her, too, and he couldnāt risk her falling apart again. He couldnāt risk any of them falling apart, literally or otherwise. Opening up and allowing them this would put them all through more pain, and they didnāt deserve that. But at the same time, a smaller part of him told him that he didnāt deserve that either, and that Garnet was right. Heās done enough for now.
His eyes dropped down, locking with the floor again. āOkay.ā
He felt the guilt instantly begin to weigh on him, knowing what he had just asked his family to do for him. But, Garnet didnāt become angry or fall apart. Instead, she smiled and wrapped him in an embrace. āThank you,ā she murmured, āfor trusting us.ā
Those words shot him through the heart. Trust. Thatās what this was, wasnāt it? Trusting that his family knew what to do? He felt his eyes well with tears.
When had he stopped trusting them?
āG-Garnet,ā he sniffled, trying hard not to let the tears fall, āI... Iām sorry.ā
Garnet tensed a bit at those words, but said nothing, allowing him to continue.
āI... I donāt trust you. But I want to. I donāt know when I stopped, I- you all- I want to trust you guys again, so...ā he looked up, meeting her widened eyes again, ā...do you- do you mind if I tell you a couple more things? Just in case?ā
Garnetās gaze softened. She pulled him back against her, snug in the embrace, and ran her hand through his hair again. āNo, not at all,ā she murmured softly. āSay whatever you need to say.ā
(Part 1? Let me know if you want a part 2, which will probably mean an Ao3 link lol)
Steven and Connie come across the scariest thing yet in their fugitive adventure... FOMO
---
Happy Halloween! I needed some sweetness in my life due to some hard personal stuff I'm dealing with right now, so I wrote this to celebrate one of my favorite holidays.
But... their last city excursion had resulted in Steven catching a fever from extreme stress.
Nursing someone back to health wasnāt particularly what Connie would call fun, either.
With all that, it was no wonder how TopsyTurvy Day snuck up on them.
(Read the rest under the cut or on Ao3!)Ā Ā
Steven could see Connie was disappointed; he was too! The socially deprived young man hadnāt celebrated the holiday in years. Trick or treating and scary movies weren't exactly a priority in the scientistās research of him. As his mind was wont to do, he wondered what kind of decorations all the Boardies put up, wondered how amazingly spooky the boardwalk would look...
He and his dad wouldāve been watching all the classics together...
Connie never had anyone to partake in TopsyTurvy festivities with her, despite the holiday being one of her favorites. The young woman would sometimes dress up and go to a local parade, but always alone. She was usually invited to a few parties this time of year but could never work up the nerve to go. Which was especially disheartening because this was the year that Connie had wanted to perfect her Lisa costume from her favorite book series, Unfamiliar Familiar. However, becoming the accomplice to a nation wide fugitive (who was quickly becoming her best friend) had taken precedent.
It was dangerous to go out, though. Even in costume.
The last time theyād been in a large city was proof enough of that. It finally seemed like they got Colonel Ryan and his goons off their trail. Since going out and carelessly having fun in Los Fuegos is kind of what got them into that situation, they decided to err on the side of caution.
...That didnāt mean they couldnāt dress up for each other though.
The two hyper, older teens had dashed into a drug store an hour before closing upon the hasty decision. They couldnāt take much more sitting around in the small motel room, watching as others paraded outside in their costumes once night fell. Plus, none of the good movies had come on yet and the boredom they faced was far more terrifying than anything else in that moment.
The two friends had made it a challenge; pick out a costume for the other and keep it hidden until they got back to the motel. Connie set a thirty-minute timer on her burner phone, (purchased quickly after one of their first run-ins with the government) and they dashed through the store. The owner of the small business looked on with a weary smile as the straggling customers picked through the scrapings of leftover costumes.
Connie had avoided the costume section altogether. Steven was a big guy, so the most logical pursuit was to come up with something a little more homemade.
Though... she wasnāt exactly feeling inspiredā¦
What kind of costume would Steven want to wear?
When was the last time he even got to dress up?
(Ugh. This was the gas station all over again.)
What would he look good in?
Not that that last question really mattered.
The competitive teen searched frantically through the masks because that would be the best option for her runaway companion, obviously. The only problem was that all of them were either too grotesque or looked too cheap. She supposed she had no right to complain, since it was the actual holiday. They were lucky that the first store they stumbled into happened to have anything to pick through at all.
Thatās when her eyes zeroed in on the cat ears. Which was stupid.
Cat ears werenāt going to cover Stevenās face or his eyes.
(... But he would look incredibly cute~)
Without much more thought, Connie plucked the ears off of the rack. Then, she raced off to the beauty section for black eyeliner. It was TopsyTurvy Day, if anything people would just think the pink of his irises were due to costume contacts. They werenāt supposed to be going out, anyway, and the sight of Steven in cat ears was a treat she wasnāt going to miss out on.
In Stevenās case, he found himself similarly stuck. There werenāt a lot of options left and he found himself far more focused on the hilarious image of Connie in some of the costumes rather than actually finding something. He was sure he wasted a good five minutes staring at a poorly made, gaudy wedding dress and blushing, but that was neither here nor there. He examined a pumpkin costume shortly, considering it; then ultimately deciding against. It was definitely right up his alley, but... wearing a pumpkin costume didnāt exactly scream Connie to him. His intelligent confidant had spoken at length on bioengineering and the importance of growing oneās own food ( a few times) while they drove around and camped in the desert. Still, that didnāt exactly mean that she would want to dress up as a vitamin rich squash for TopsyTurvy. The idea was adorable though. Tucking that image away to daydream about later, Steven contemplated over the available options for a few more moments, before he landed on something Ā perfect!
Ā A school girl costume.Ā
It was a little on the nose, but-! ...One of his favorite things about Connie was how much she valued education; how much the intelligent young woman loved to learn as much as she did teach. He often caught himself fantasizing on what it wouldāve been like to attend classes with her. School was something Steven would fantasize about frequently whilst holed up in his room in between experiments, (questioning or some variation of the two) sleep escaping him. The new idea of being classmates with Connie only made the concept all the more alluring. In the quiet moments, huddled up in her truck or a cramped room, heād curl around her and watch as she typed away on her laptop or scribbled in her journal. Theories and stories she created and expanded upon spilled from her fingers and lips as soon as the half-gem hybrid would ask for elaboration.
Steven had also yet to see Connie in a skirt in all their time together. Sheād made it a point to get him some admittedly fashionable duds when they first met and he figured it was time to return the makeover favor. That thought propelled him to the register, bursting into a jaunty run when he spotted Connie out of the corner of his eye heading in the same direction.
So, now, there they were. Back in the small motel room, giddy smiles on their faces and costumes hidden behind their backs. Barely containing their giggles as they counted off together,
Ā āThr- Haha stop it, Iām gonna pee!ā
Ā āFffff-You stop it!ā
Ā Or, at least tried to.
Ā āThreeā¦ā
Ā āTwoā¦ā
Ā āOne, go!ā
Simultaneously, they whipped the items of their conquests from behind their backs, proud smiles quickly falling into befuddled expressions.Ā
Ā āSteven... I know you donāt know the implications of this but oh my god... ā
Ā She snorted, too amused by the pink-eyed teenās blushing to get properly worked up about the sexism linked to a school girl uniform as a costume. Still, Connie didnāt want it to seem like she was just making fun of him. But, before she could properly explain the long, exhausted history and battle of reclaiming the school girl image in modern feminism, the flushed boy mumbled,Ā
Ā āI guess... now is a bad time to tell you that I once had a bad experience... being a cat.ā
Ā āIām sorry- what?ā
Ā What had they done to him in that place?!
āI shapeshifted into a bunch of cats once and my dad had to hose me down so I could turn back to normal. It was really traumatic...ā
Connie blinked owlishly at him, frozen momentarily before she was all flailing arms and gestures.
Ā āYou can shapeshift?! You didnāt even need a costume!ā
Ā āW-Wha- I canāt do it well, obviously! Ā Thatās why I donāt turn into cats anymore!ā
Ā And she couldnāt hold it in any longer, hysterical laughter bubbling out of her loudly and unbidden, As always, it infected her friend. The two found themselves leaning onto each other, slumping on the single queen sized bed as they tried to catch their breath.
It turned out the skirt was far too big for her, anyway; the only sizes left at the store apparently werenāt small enough to fit her. The lithe teen yanked the ears from out of Stevenās hands and placed them atop her own head with a bright smile.Ā
Ā And that vision was infinitely cuter and more rewarding than anything his imagination would ever come up with.Ā
Ā The young man adorned himself with the school girl costume instead, the skirt fitting him surprisingly well. The shirt that came with it was too slim for his broad figure, however. He decided just to leave it unbuttoned, which wouldāve been fine if he was wearing an undershirt. Honestly, the untucked shirt just looked sloppy. They might not have been exactly going anywhere to impress anyone else, but that didnāt mean they couldnāt put their all into dressing up. Connie looked at him ponderingly, failing to hide her blush at the nakedness of his chest (though, by now it was certainly a familiar sight). With a quick snap, the young stylist tugged him to her by the ends of the shirt, tying it up snugly underneath his pecs. She took a step back to examine her alteration.
Oh no.Ā
Ā That was worse.
Ā Well, it was actually better.
(...Waaay better...)
The blouse confined his chest attractively, plaid skirt settled comfortably on his hips with his pink gem hidden underneath the pleated fabric.Ā
She distracted herself by pulling out one of her spare tennis outfits so they could match somewhat (ignoring those implications as well). Along with it, two belts, black and brown respectively. Tossing him the brown one and explaining how to tie it so it mimicked a tail, she bounded off to the bathroom to change. Wasting little time, the sports uniform adorned teen called Steven into the tiny washroom once she finished so she could draw whiskers on him if he so pleased.Ā
Ā He did so please.Ā
Ā After quickly applying the others makeup, they went to check out their finished looks in the full length mirror.Ā Though... the makeup process probably would have gone much quicker if Steven werenāt so giggly,
āYouāre gonna mess up the line!āĀ
Ā āIt tickles!ā
Ā Or if Connie werenāt so prone to squirming,Ā
Ā āConnie! Youāve gotta keep your eyes closed.āĀ
Ā āIām trying! But thereās a stick of ink coming at my face!ā
But, they were in no real rush to go anywhere. They could take the time to be squirmy and giggly.
Steven twirled. Once, twice, enjoying the swish of the fabric against his thick thighs as Connie smiled at their reflections.Ā
Ā āLookin' feliiiine! ā The costumed young woman exclaimed, throwing finger guns and posing.
Stevenās eyes sparkled at her pun, inciting him to share some of his own as he threw a friendly arm over her shoulder.
āWe look purrfect, the catās meow~ā The two fell into another bout of laughter when an excitable, well rested Cactus began to yip and yap at their ankles.
āHow do we look, Cactus?ā Steven asked genuinely, he very much valued the succulentās opinion.
Ā āYip! ā
Ā āAw, shucks! Thank you!ā
Ā She was such a flatterer.Ā
Connie could only shake her head and look on slightly befuddled, more than used to these conversations between the two hybrids. The only thing that Ā really Ā confused her was just how Cactus understood English? Or any human language, truly...
Ā āYip yip!ā
Ā āOh, whatās that?ā The bulkier of the two crouched down to the chatty plant, ear turned towards her as if to better translate her barks.Ā
Ā āYip!ā
Ā āCactus, I dunno... I mean that sounds pretty riskyā¦āĀ
Ā āOrrff, yiiiip!ā
Ā Finally, inquisitive nature getting the better of her, Connie laughed almost exasperatedly,
Ā āWhat are you two going on about?
Ā āYipyipyip! Yip!ā
Ā āAlright, alright! Iāll tell her,ā Steven straightened up after that, holding the adorable ball of needles in his arms and thatās when Connie knew she was in trouble. Whether he realized it or not, Steven would often use Cactusā adorableness to amplify his own in order to get something he wanted. It was a tactic that worked all too well on her,Ā
Ā āCactus thinks we should take a quick stroll around the neighborhoodā¦ā
Ā There it was.
Ā āStevenā¦ā
Ā āI know, I know! Itās dangerous but... weāre together!ā He grabbed her hand and turned them back towards the mirror, squeezing affectionately, āPlus, look how good we look! Weāre cactus approved!ā
Ā It really wasnāt fair. She didnāt stand a chance, not with the tender way he was holding Cactus, the now familiar softness of his palm against her own or his beaming smile.
Ā He was here.
Ā She was here.Ā
They were together.
Ā They could take on anything, because they weren't alone anymore.Ā
Ā āOkay!ā She conceded bubbly causing Steven to wrap her up in a tight embrace; twirling them around andĀ almost knocking over a nearby nightstand in the process. Connie could feel his gem glowing against her torso more than she saw it. With a nervous laugh, the cautious young woman added,Ā
They ended up staying out for hours, delighting in the treasures of the small town after dark. They played silly games, getting caught up in a game of tag with the neighborhood children that offered them candy because they loved their costumes. After that, they didnāt run into many other people. The ones they did see, however, were entirely impressed with the quality of Stevenās "contacts" and made sure to compliment them.
Ā And for a few hours, in the twilight of All Saints Day, they were just two teenagers. Just two people enjoying themselves, stargazing on a tree branch because it was a clear night and they wanted to. Things almost felt normal.Ā
Ā Almost.
Ā The fear, the paranoia was still there.
(Otherwise, they probably would have fused at one point... The want was palpable enough.)Ā
They were terrified that at any moment while out in public, Steven would be recognized. Any humanity or kindness others had shown him would turn into cold prejudice.Ā
Ā But they hadnāt.Ā
They gave Steven sweets and even sweeter compliments. And here he was, staring at the cosmos with the sweetest friend heād ever had.Ā
And yes Steven was majorly high on cactus juice (itās the quenchiest) when he made cactus. But he was kiiiinda coming down from it by then. Still tho- he was excited as heck about his new plant friend.
Oh⦠whatās this ššš I told yall to keep your eye on the blog! I said that 3 hours ago but whatās the concept of time have to do with anything

Korri: what I loved so much about this piece is how viscerally the emotion is captured here! Thereās a fluid movement in this that easily allows the viewer to imagine what happens next. The nervous smile detail was a nice touch that is very āStevenā quirk that really captivated me. Iām also super in love with your night sky and background skill, Amazing work!
Bud: This piece is just super vibrant and clean. The warmer colors give it a more tense vibe. The detail in the coloring, shading, and lineart just gives it a cohesive, pleasing, and professional look. Really gives me animated movie vibes~ very well done!
Make sure to DM Bud and I at our personal handles ( @namestakenbudĀ andĀ @queen-korri ) for your art and fic request!
šµšµšµšµšµ
There were so many wonderful entries, we ended up picking some honorable mentions!
@merveeillee
Bud: This piece is INTENSE. I can tell just by looking at it that a lot of attention went into it. It really stands out! Between the heavy saturation, crispy noise filter, extreme warm lighting, and artistic liberties, this is just a really fun and chaotic piece that is very enjoyable to view!
Korri: Bud said it best, I love the INTENSITY of this piece, itās super evocative. Iām in love with your use of color! The rip on the boiler suit and other added details were extremely nice touches (i too would love for Cactus to be plopped atop my head) š¤
@teddymorps
Bud: The bold lines, clean coloring, and coherent style of this piece are just so nice to look at! As someone who never had an anime phase, I love western animation. This piece in particular is a style I would expect to see for a modern cartoon. Itās distinct and beautiful.
Korri: Youāve got a really good eye for composition and keeping to a flow. I love Connieās expression! it comes across very dynamic, as if sheās got a million questions but isnāt sure which one to ask first (which is very true)
šµšµšµšµšµ
Again, thank you so so so much for participating and engaging with this blog. Yāall keep us motivatedĀ š¤
Psssssssst also keep your eye out for a very special surprise within the next hour or soĀ ššš
