what is the climate in suwkya ?
suwka is considered a cold (almost consistently freezing) country, often having snow or whiteout as it’s main weather conditions. suwkya is located close to kamchatka and above japan’s northern reigons, so it is also quite windy due to being an island located in the north. across the entire country, the average amount of snowfall is around 0.7m (2’3”) but depending on the reigon this can be less or more.
in winter, temperatures range from -14°C to -4°C whereas in summer temperatures fall around 8°C to 12°C, feeling closer to a cold early morning than full-on heat. the highest ever recorded temperature in suwkya was 26°C, which is actually around the average summer temperature in usa!
how did ancient suwkis deal with this?
historically, farmers in the south of suwkya had to deal with a slightly less amount of snowfall, with slightly warmer temperatures. they took this to their advantage and grew crops from early spring to summer, using winter as a “reset” period. this is where suwki’s new year tradition began, essentially acting as a celebration of the farming year being over.
a cold climate only has so much you can grow naturally, so over time, completely unique crops and plants grew in suwkya and were utilised by the community. a frost-resistant strain of rice was grown, which became the staple food as well as a type of tree growing which had adapted to cold conditions and benefit the community greatly with the rot-resistant bark.
how do modern suwkis deal with this?
the suwki government banned usage of cars shortly after their failed introduction in 1957, due to consistent safety issues surrounding snow and difficulties with ice-melting on the roads. since cars aren’t used, suwkya uses a country-wide train system as the main mode of transport (which i’ll get into later). suwki people are usually completely opposed to car usage aswell, especially as it doesn’t align with their main religious values of keeping earth safe and clean to use.
another way that the cold climate is dealt with, is by clothing! popular clothing brands in suwkya also run a different clothing line, including producing things like jackets, scarves, earmuffs and boots. suwki people also opt for having a wardrobe full of practical but also aesthetic clothes, which protects against their feet getting wet or from getting snow in their eyes during blizzards. special types of clothes were also invented recently, so that people could adapt to the climate.
