moonethos:
su,
these colors are getting more ridiculous by the letter. i swear, it takes me double the time to decipher what everything says. but you’re always one to make things complicated with an extra flair. so i can’t say that this is unexpected.
seems that korra’s stayed radio - silent, at least for now. mako’s a bit upset by that, but he’ll get over it. the kid clearly wants to be left alone. she nearly died in the avatar state. i wouldn’t want anyone bothering me after that … except for maybe katara, who might actually understand what that would feel like. the avatar has always bounced back, and korra’s got a fighting spirit. it’ll come back to her. as for asami, she’s swamped with work. raiko’s investing in more technology and she’s the one to go to … now that apparently varrick has been recruited by kuvira.
i’m sorry to hear about your son. and kuvira. i relayed the message to opal and she didn’t take it well at first, but now she’s more infuriated than sad. i told her not to worry about you and the rest of our family. i want her to focus on airbending. pretty sure it’s what you would want, too. just let me know if i’m overstepping.
thanks for informing me on the mounting pressure against prince wu. i’ve assigned mako to do a little digging on kuvira and the practices she’s enforcing. just a gut feeling of mine. he got me reports in record - time. all first hand accounts from earth nation citizens, and all confidential. it’s too much to discuss on paper. i’ll show you it in person. it’s too private to break out at a restaurant, so i’ll get us something from kwong’s. meet me at my apartment after your meeting with raiko, and i’ll have dinner ready. good luck not wringing his neck the second you see him. i have to hold myself back every time.
and su … i hope it goes without saying, but just know that you can trust me. i’m not going anywhere any time soon.
lin.
dearest lin,
i wanted to let you know how much i enjoyed your company last month in republic city. it is nice to know that you are near opal, and i am delighted that you at least allow yourself a nice place to call home. maybe one day you will allow me to put up pictures of our family, and, for references, i have attached several for you to choose from.
i’ve heard that there is still no word on korra. i can only hope that our avatar is alright, sometimes it’s easy to forget that she’s just a kid. that kind of pressure is too much for anyone, you remember what it was like when mom tried to treat us like that? if her expectations were too much for me, imagine being the avatar. tell mako to relax, and that i appreciate all he’s doing to find out about kuvira. i’ve heard whispers that i didn’t like, parts about reeducation camps. i’ve sent letters to my son but they’ve all fell on deaf ears. no responses.
i hope opal is alright. i’ve sent her a few things from home to try and comfort her, but i’m not sure what to do. without kuvira here, things feel strange. i’m sure you’ve heard the rumors, that i was training her to take over zaofu. i can tell you that’s true — i was. but that wasn’t just it. i loved her, but i’m afraid i didn’t show it enough. god lin, if something happens, it will be my fault. i would have e done this to her, because i wasn’t — i try to be a good mother. to be a good leader. but it’s harder than it looks. much harder. i’m trying but it’s not enough. every dya the unrest grows, and prince wu is doing little to help. it’s a nightmare here.
have you heard anything else from raiko? i’m sure you’re wware, but they want to move the prince to republic city until things are safer. i’d have offered up zaofu to host him, but i cannot handle another headache. also — can you keep an eye on opal? i can’t ... i can’t have her come back here. not now. not yet. as always, i need you to promise you’re taking time for yourself too. this work that you do... it’s exhausting. don’t forget to take care of yourself lin, i know you aren’t.
your beloved sister,
su. ♡
moonethos:
before suyin shows signs of consciousness, a million things go through lin beifong’s mind. the first is their family. suyin’s the one that holds them all together. as lavish as the title of THE MATRIARCH is, it truly does mean something. lin always felt like she had a shadow of a mother, but for her niece and nephews to not have one anymore ? it’s a topic she wouldn’t know how to handle. and the second feeling that swallows her is intense regret. lin is filled with regrets. she has been consumed by bitterness that lingers still. the biggest one is the thirty year gap wedged between their relationship. that’s on her. she is glad she set some sort of boundary between them after the incident, but to go silent for years ? lin took away time that she could have spent with a family she pretended didn’t exist. one that now completes her, though she wouldn’t admit it.
lin scoffs at suyin’s comment, but with how high the stakes have been, with all of the shit that they’ve gone through … it draws out a smirk, and then even a chuckle. ❛ woah, slow down, ❜ she says when suyin takes her hand for support to stand, guiding it down so that they can sit and rest against the metal wall. her other arm hugs her own midsection. the pain is beginning to throb a bit more intensely, but she would have to be out cold to admit she was hurting.
❛ you were out cold for awhile. let’s take a minute. ❜ not very fitting for a beifong to say — they’re always told to keep moving, no matter what — but lin just feels lucky that her sister is breathing. ❛ the weapon hasn’t fired since we came to. i don’t wanna chance it, but i’m gonna guess it’s been taken down. ❜ it’s also eerily quiet. enough for lin to guess that kuvira’s run has come to an end. she feels the wind hit her face, lets the silence settle. with what seems like a pause that lasts forever, lin beifong, for once in her life, allows her emotions to take over. ❛ i don’t know what would have happened if i lost you, su. ❜ it comes out awkwardly. but she powers through the embarrassment of being vulnerable. ❛ i wasted a lot of … time … being angry for so long. i needed silence for a bit after what happened, but … i shouldn’t have let it last for thirty years. i’m … sorry. ❜
WHAT IS THIRTY YEARS without a sister? without the person suyin grew up with. without a friend, without someone who was always in her corner. how much anger, how much resentment had she carried for so long? su couldn’t even remember what it was like to have lin in her life. what is thirty years? it’s a wedding, a dressed up bride eagerly watching the door, hoping her sister will come in ( probably late. not dressed. ) she doesn’t come. what is thirty years? the birth of her son, and a letter sent to republic city. an invitation to his first birthday. a day she watches the door until the sun sets. when her husband tells her to come to bed. she doesn’t come. what is thirty years? it is opal’s fourth birthday, when her family feels so complete that suyin writes another letter to lin, begging her. our family cannot be complete without you. again, su watches the door. watches for lin. she doesn’t come.
it’s her fault. the guilt is heavy. for years, she carries it. she talks about it with bataar, in the whispers of the night. but it’s not something she can fix. so she learns to forget it. she hears about lin of course. the papers from republic city reach her doorstep too. she wants to reach out, but she cannot take the heartache of another ignored letter. so she forgets about it. suyin is engrossed in her own work, her family. even if it has always been missing lin.
‘ i’m alright lin i don’t need a minute ‘ she balances herself slowly, until she’s standing up straight and breathing. she’s fine. she’s alive. lin is alive. for a moment, there is nothing but silence. until lin speaks, and su turns to face her. there is little where lin is open — su carries every emotion in her expression, but it is not the same for lin. it never was. to su, lin is indestructible, unbreakable until suyin injures her. before that, she’s sure her sister is made of titanium from the way she acts. to see her vulnerable now, suyin lets go of the weight on her chest. ‘ you didn’t lose me. ‘ she’s quick to point out, arms hugging her chest as she listens. ‘ you know not a day went by when i didn’t think of you. i should have — i meant to tell you i was sorry for — for what i did to you. your scar. it wasn’t right lin, just because i was young — it still wasn’t right. i’m sorry too. ‘
moonethos:
it’s like she’s transported back to forty years ago, back to when they were little girls and bickering like sisters do. that part of their relationship hasn’t changed despite the gap that was wedged between them for years and has since been mended. if this was anyone else, lin would legitimately grow angry — a boundary of hers is being crossed. but it’s su, and she’s one of the only people in lin’s life who’s able to bring the chief out of her comfort zone without making her go ballistic.
lin looks at her, pausing as silence fills the room, her jaw locked. finally, her head dips with a defeated sigh. ❛ fine. i’ll bite. i’ll … try it on, at least. ❜ lin makes it clear that she’s doing this reluctantly, as her words drip with a begrudging tone. ❛ but … what’s all this for ? ❜ lin juts her chin to the makeup and hair supplies that are scattered on the bed. is she going to get roped into a clothing and hair makeover ? absolutely not, she tells herself. ❛ please tell me it’s for you and opal. ❜
this is definitely another step in the right direction. she’s pleasantly pleased with herself for getting lin this far already, and has realized that under her resolve, she’s sure that she can break lin even further. she won’t leave until lin is all dressed up, and she can be very convincing. ‘ i told you you’re going to look beautiful in it lin! ‘ she’s excited, like she’s transported back to years when lin was her beautiful older sister that suyin wished she could look like.
suyin watches lin’s eyes fall on the makeup and hair and she grins, already opening up everything. of course she isn’t going to lin go to the wedding without the proper accessories too. ‘ lin — it’s a wedding! it’s all or none, and you represent tthe city! ‘ su smiles, brushing her hair out of her face and looking around for anything. a proper mirror? lighting? how did her sister live like this? ‘ it’ll be fun lin, i promise. ‘
unsurprisingly ! this blog is now exclusive with @moonethos‘s interpretation of lin beifong. I will not be writing with other lins !
suing @moonethos
every united republic meeting seems more and more boring than the last. suyin is here to represent zaofu and the earth kingdom, somehow falling into step as the a leader come the fall of the monarchy. she’s bored out of her mind as raiko speaks, instead turning over to izumi, the fire lord and friend for company. ‘ you think anyone in this room cares what he’s saying? i don’t think so. ‘ suyin’s distaste for the president is no secret, and she flaunts it at any moment she can.
she carefully moves closer to the fire lord, eyes discretely looking for signs that they will be able to leave soon. when she finds none, su sighs and turns back to izumi with a frown. ‘ guess we’re stuck here for a while. . . ‘ she says, with an empty smile. instead of listening, she takes his as a moment to catch up with izumi then. it’s been years. ‘ tell me — how is the fire nation? your family? urza was so young the last i’d heard ... and iroh? i trust they are well? ‘
@sunpathos for izumi !
moonethos:
it happens all so quickly. one moment they’re proud to have disabled the weapon and caused more internal damage, and the next they’re suddenly moving. kuvira knows we’re here, lin thinks, and knows they’ll be hurling through the air at any moment. without the weapon functioning, the arm is dead weight and kuvira will want it gone. she watches su’s head slam against the wall. her sister goes limp. lin can’t do anything but think fast — they’re about to go flying. she metalbends the walls, strapping both her and su to it. it’s the only way they might get out of this alive. she doesn’t remember much, because once they land, everything goes black.
lin awakens with a groan, head throbbing. but she’s faced dangerous situations like this before, forcing herself to become hyper - aware of her surrounds. snap out of your grogginess, lin ! she starts to remember where she is, moving her arms to feel the metal wrapped around her. lin’s head turns to see suyin, and it all sharply comes back to her. su isn’t moving. she isn’t moving. lin immediately metalbends herself out of the wall, feet slamming into the ground. her ribs ache but she can’t feel it because all she can think about is su. lin doesn’t panic — she can’t. her body will go into shock, and that’s the last thing she needs. she’s acting the same way she did when kuvira had fired her weapon. lin watched the beam strike from afar. everyone she loved was in that building, and she wasn’t with them. she would be all alone. the chief had rushed over as fast as she could. everyone’s probably dead, she assumed, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to try her hardest to pull them out from the rubble, no matter what. it was a miracle they were all alive. she hopes she doesn’t need a miracle again, because they’re hard to come by.
she metalbends suyin out carefully, catching her sister’s body in her arms and trying her best to hold the weight despite her extensive injuries. ❛ hey. ❜ she’s not opposed to slapping her — she did that to tenzin once, but lin opts to shake her instead. and again. and again. lin finds herself about to lose it until a groan emits from su’s mouth, her body beginning to move. the pit in lin’s stomach alleviates, a relieved sigh escaping her lips. ❛ don’t ever scare me like that again, su. ❜
@suyinbefong gets this thing.
SHE IS NOT WEAK. no daughter of toph beifong is weak. she stands up for her family, she fights the good fight. suyin goes with her sister because they have to, because together they can defeat kuvira. besides, kuvira wouldn’t kill her. suyin believes that. she does. she keeps telling herself that, when her head slams into the metal wall, knocking her out. she’s like my daughter, she won’t let me die , she wouldn’t — she loves me — she wouldn’t
she thinks of her son. her beloved little boy, the quiet inveentor wanting to be just like his father. she thinks of the heartache in his eyes, she thinks of what it wwas like tto hold him as the wall collapsed as they almost died. when lin came, did she expect to find their bodies? would su have left her sister all alone? she wouldn’t. in the darkness, there’s memories. the scar. su never said sorry, what if she died? what if she died right now without ever telling her sister she was sorry? so sorry for what she did, for being a stupid child. for never trying harder, for not looking for lin harder, for not trying. she remembers bataar, his face. she remembers her mother, the disappointment in her eyes. why does she only remember that face? spirits if she dies, let lin rest easy. let her family guide lin, because it’s her family too.
something breaks inside her, when it hits that kuvira would let her die and like the spirits itself have entered her soul, suyin coughs — awake in the arms of her sister. she reaches up, half smiling as blood covers her mouth. ‘ you think i’d leave you alone? knowing how you dress? you need me. ‘ she’s trying to be funny as she regains her strength but suyin can’t stop thinking, about kuvira. she coughs again, before trying to stand , reaching up to her sister to stand. ‘ i’m not going anywhere lin — i promise. ‘
moonethos:
su,
starting this letter off by requesting a change in color. i don’t know how you can stand writing in bright green. and i don’t know what possessed you to sprinkle in glitter. can you ever do something normal without adding anything … extra ?
anyway, the city’s doing just fine. korra, on the other hand, can’t seem to pick up where she left off. i thought maybe jinora’s ceremony would … i don’t know, inspire her ? seems dumb to think, but she went through everything she did to save the air nation. korra’s headed to the south pole to try and heal with katara. only the best for the avatar, huh ? i bet she’ll be fine. she’s a tough kid. been through a lot. asami, on the other hand, is at the top of her game. it’s nice having another woman this high up in the city to talk to. someone who gets it.
and about bolin … he said he’s off to work for kuvira. i remember her in zaofu. she’s that guard, right ? she was there the day zaheer began to fly. either way, i’m not sure what’s brewing, su, but i don’t like the sound of it. what’s happening over there ? opal’s awaiting a reply, too. but bolin is probably safer outside of republic city. one misstep with opal and it would be over for him.
you’re meeting with prince wu, huh ? i’ve heard that kid is more entitled than all the other earth kingdom royals combined. everything feels a bit on edge here, but i guess that’s what happens when an entire monarchy falls to the side. can’t really imagine what it feels like inside the earth nation. just let me know if you need backup in case everything goes haywire again. not that you can’t handle yourself.
stay safe. love you.
lin.
dearest lin,
i thought you would find it amusing. your request is noted and respectfully denied because i do enjoy writing in such beautiful colors, and consider it to be my signature. think of it this way, should you receive a letter in black or blue ink, it means your sister has been kidnapped. i find it much more amusing and you should try it too lin, perhaps some light in your life will help.
i firmly believe that korra will get through this. god, i can’t imagine what thats like for her. i still have nightmares about the poison in her system, of what could have happened if i couldn’t get it out. but i did. let her know she can write to me if she wants. i’m sure she has everyone’s ear but just . . . in case she needs someone else you know? i hope katara can help her. and i’m glad you have asami, she’s brilliant. i know a genius when i see one, and that girl is going places lin. i believe in those two.
for kuvira? god lin, she was more than a guard. i picked that girl off the streets and raised her like my own daughter. i fostered her talent, i watched her grow up and i loved her like she was my own. and we had a disagreement over the earth kingdom, over the power imbalance that came from the queen’s death, and then she just got up and left. took my son with her. away from our family. it is broken lin, the family i had created. we’re torn by the edges, and i don’t know what kuvira’s saying to bataar, and now bolin it seems, to get them to leave their homes and the people that they love. i’ve heard rumors, of some power that they’re gathering in the earth kingdom, heard of the attempts against prince wu. i want to believe it’s not true. but these days, i don’t know who to trust anymore lin. i couldn’t trust my own family.
it’s getting hard. handling myself has always been simple because i was propped up by my own family. but it’s falling. i’m glad the city is doing well, you know that’s because you’ve done everything to keep it that way. i should be visiting president raiko in a month for a summit on the earth kingdom, perhaps we can get dinner together? i miss you lin. take care of yourself.
your beloved sister,
su. ♡
when they were children, suyin had visited the water tribe alongside her mother a few times. it was long ago but she had heard of kya, whispers of suyin’s sister’s relationship with her, but never any definite yes or no from lin. of course, lin was never open about anything besides her work. so su took it upon herself to learn everything herself. when she catches kya for a moment alone, she pounces on the opportunity to get some answers. ' kya! ‘ she calls before trapping the other in a hug. ‘ it’s been too long! ‘
adorned in zaofu’s green, suyin is at the top of her game. the united republic is holding this dinner to celebrate peace, and she’s determined to get her answers about lin from her. with a nod of her head, she begins. ‘ gosh I don’t think I've been able to talk to you since ... ‘ su squints, faintly aware that it was probably before su and lin’s falling out. ‘ tell me, how are you? is lin still bothering you? ‘ word choice is careful, not off-putting but wanting to knowing.
