A Bigger Splash, 1967

From gay boy, water flower, photo collage and, in recent years, refresh ipad painting. David Hockney has always maintained himself as the most interesting person.

"A Bigger Splash" was released in 1974.

This film records the story of David and his friends, gay friends, gay friends of friends, gay friends of gay friends, lovers of friends, and friends of gay friends. Not only does the film appreciate the simplicity of the boy, but the whole picture is filled with fascinating magic. In addition, it can also see the scene of David's painting: deconstructing the inspiration and process of creating those amazing masterpieces.\

At the time of shooting this film, David had already broken up with Peter, but he just kept asking Peter to come back when his Muse asked him to continue painting, maybe for other reasons. So this later series of pictures of the pool, Peter, boy's bare bottom series included such strong tension.

i think in another way peter is a part of the artwork. and this is another kind of cooperation.

FINAL WORK

The topic that I done last assessment is erasure. In the 3 weeks I done some experiment to explore more about the ‘erasure’. This time I choose the artist Tim Silver. The artwork Untitled (bust) (Pine Timbermate Woodfiller), 2011. So I think maybe I can do some experiment like this artwork, but I want explore it by use the software. At first, I use Photoshop to make an obvious pixels art. The pixel is a kind of ‘erasure’ I think. It looks like an uncompleted art, but actually, we can get the simple information from the pixel art. The second experiment is that I use two pics combine to one pic. The two pics that I took, one is the lights and another one is a photogram. Then I change the fill percent of the main one, to make a change in the four pics, looks like a ‘process of erasure’. Then I think it cannot give a strong feeling of erasure, so I try to combine the two ideas, and get some spirit from the Untitled(bust). Like the sculpture give a process of collapse. Erasure can be show like a sketch. So I use a photo of a singer with a guitar, then get the sketch of the main part. Then found a material of the creative water color on the paper to fill the sketch. And then I make some effect like splash ink to make the pic looks more erased. But I found that this effect may look a little rigid. So I try to make the effect like smoke to make the pic looks soft to make an erasure. In this pic the clear sketch of guitar and the smoke make a contrast. But mixed color and the smoke I think can show ‘erasure’ in this picture.

i use the pic of a singer, and use Photoshop to keep the sketch and fill colors. then add some splash ink effect on the pic.

i use two photos in the same situation, one is only the lights, another one has a sketch of a woman. i combine the two and change the percent of the two in one pic. then make a process of erase.

In the week of Erasure, we’re exposed to Angelica Mesiti’s work - Silent Anthem (2009). She has essentially slowed down a footage and erased its background sound to compel a more profound meaning. She has always been interested in non-verbal communication, quote “Society has become so more and more text and word oriented”. Which we found relevant, because like the old saying a picture worth a thousand words. Hence in our own practice, we took a music video (Sing For You - EXO), and remove it’s soundtrack and adding it’s natural sound. By doing so, we mimic Mesiti’s theory of removing the element of voice and words, however, to extend the work we’re adding elements of naturalistic sounds. We found the very beauty in natural sound, we then incorporated our own folly music and some online free sounds.

We find in Mesiti’s work only used an undertone in the music and with an intense visual element, which we change. We’ve also selected a black and white visual image deliberately, just so to highlight the importance of sound. The emphasis on sound makes the video having a profound story. The sound gives characters to the visual and adds on a personality that was not there before.

During his collaboration, our team collaborated very smoothly and nicely. Nelly went to find follies, Suzy went to find the video, and I came up with the idea and finalising the video at the end. It was a very fun process
