Thanks to all who attended last week’s fantastic alumni panel! It was awesome to hear from previous SVA graduates about their post-college work and lives. For our last meeting of the school year we’re doing another of our famous Self-Indulgent Fanart Nights! Come hang out with us on Discord as we trade drawing requests (either existing characters or OCs with reference) in a Secret Santa-type setup. Receive a drawing of a character of your choice as you draw one for someone else!

Hope to see you there this Friday (April 30th) at 6:30 PM EST! If you don’t have access to the Discord server, email us from your SVA account. The server will be up and active even after the school year ends!

Hi Folks!

Thanks for joining us last week for our screening of Your Name! We hope you enjoyed crying for Mitsuha and Taki as much as we did! This week we have a very special meeting planned, Alumni Night! We’ll be talking with a selection of wonderful SVA cartooning alumni and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions. Panelists include: Alex Graudins, Jiwon Kim, Veronica Agarwal and Bowen McCurdy.

To sign up for the event, put down your name and SVA email through our EventBrite page. You MUST sign up with your SVA email in order for us to verify you. We will not send you the zoom link if you don't put down an SVA email. This event is open to all SVA students, staff, and alumni.

Hey Friends! Hope everyone enjoyed our special LGBTQ+SVA and Cartoon Allies crossover episode! It was so fun to hang out together drawing our favorite ships. This Friday we’re keeping the chill vibes rolling with a movie viewing on Your Name. Based in a light novel and directed by famous Japanese director Makoto Shinkai, Your Name follows the tale of two teens, Mitsuha and Taki who mysteriously start swapping bodies. Life for the duo becomes more complicated when they decided to meet in person. For our friends that like munching on snacks while watching a movie, we suggest putting together you own snack Arsenal. We’ll be having snacks too on our side of the screen, is it’ll be a virtual snack party as well. Hope to see y’all soon! —Cartoon Allies

Hey Y’all! Hope everyone had a great time last week learning and sharing info on merch and how to make some amazing products for possible future cons and such! We'll be linking the presentation and resources for that soon, but in the meantime please check out the #resources channel in the Discord.

This week we are collaborating with the LGBTQ+ Club for ship night! It’s going to be a night where we can all talk and draw our favorite ships from all different types of media. We will be sharing and providing some fun prompts, references for poses, and of course some ship meme dynamics! Hope everyone can join us for a chill night of hanging out while drawing some fun ships! As usual, our link will be in the #announcements tab in the discord. Thank you for coming to Favorite Comics last week! It was a blast hearing all your favorites books and now my recommendation list is stacked.

Usually, around this time of year, Allies would have been preparing to sell your art at MOCCAFest as well as have a very own student convention with Freshmeat! Hopefully, next school year we will be able to have these events, but for now, it's never too early to start designing and planning what merch you want to sell with your art.

This meeting, we will cover the basics of where we get merch manufactured, how to make them ourselves, and how to set our designs up in our drawing programs to be ready to print.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the warm up night, last meeting! Some of the writing warmups Co-President Knack wrote up are in the #resources tab on the discord, so feel free to do them in your own time if you like. (And share them with us if you want!)

This week’s meeting is going to be Favorite Comics Night. Bring along your favorite comics! They can be webcomics, old comics, new comics, manga, anything you like. You can show them physically or screen share!

In the Normal Times, we’d be bringing books in to pass around, but due to circumstance, we’ll just be screen sharing this time :( Bring yourself and your love for comics, as this meeting is express and encouraging permission to GUSH at full force about your favorite comics and why they're AWESOME.

We can’t want to see you all there!! :D

Hey everyone! We hope everyone who attended Molly Ostertag’s guest talk had a great time! It was informative and inspiring. For those of you who didn’t catch it the first time, we’ll be uploading an abridged recording of the talk to Youtube in the coming weeks.

This week’s meeting is Warm Up Sketch Night! Just like how athletes warm up their muscles before a game, it’s important for artists to warm up their drawing skills! Hey everyone, hope you all had a nice spring break! The week before last we spent some time drawing each other’s furry friends on Pet Drawing Night. Thanks to everyone who participated it was a blast! This Friday we are talking with Molly Ostertag over Zoom. Molly is the creator of the Witch Boy book series and has done writing on the Owl House. She has a presentation for us describing her cartooning career. Afterward, there will be a Q&A so have your questions ready or send them to an officer if you might be absent from the meeting.

Howdy everyone!

We hope you all enjoyed last Friday’s live comics reading night as well as our collaboration meeting with SVA Cosplay and AASU! This week, our meeting is Pet Drawing Night! This meeting will function similarly to our Valentine’s Day event. Last week’s OC Drawing Night was so much fun!! Our hearts were warmed to see everyone draw each others’ characters.

This week (Friday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 PM EST) is our Live Comics Reading! Bring a short comic excerpt (your own or someone else’s that you like) and we will perform thrilling, dramatic readings of them over Discord. If you need an invite to the server, email us through your SVA account.

Hey y'all! This week's meeting is one of the best - Valentine OC Night! Do you want free fanart of your oc? Well, this meeting is for you. Upload character sheets of your OCs to this Google Drive and this Friday, February 12th, we'll all draw each other's characters and swap them around. It's fun for the whole (fictional) family. The meeting will be held, as usual, on our Discord server at 6:30 PM EST. If you haven't joined yet, please let us know via your SVA email and we'll send you a server invite. Now that all of our hands are feeling especially nimble after last week's excellent Hand Health meeting, join us this coming Friday @ 6:30 PM EST for One Page Zine Night! Tackle the ultimate short-form cartooning challenge with an eight-panel mini comic, make a short instruction manual on how to pet cats correctly or just hang out and doodle with us. Hey Friends!

It was so fun seeing everyone’s pitches last week! The character designs, the plots, even the music! The amazing worlds and stories everyone has created already has me at the edge of my seat and wanting more. I’m sure we’ll be seeing them again in the future.

For now though, let’s talk about one of the most important tools in our artist arsenal: our hands! Do you know your hands? Like really know them? Are you taking care of them in the way that they deserve? If not, that’s okay! We’re here to help!

Join us this week for Hand Health Night and Self Care, where we’ll be learning different tips to help take care of our hands as well as do some hand stretching yoga sessions. We’ll also be learning other important artist body wellness tips too.

Pitch Night is a night where we can all get together and share our own original stories with each other. (A way we can all gush over our OCs) Feel free to put together any type of presentation you see fit in order to pitch your stories.

Hi folks,

I hope you guys had a nice winter break; more importantly, I hope you guys actually got to sleep. Allies will continue to host our meetings on Discord for the rest of the school year, and we have some exciting meetings, and guest Speakers planned out for the following weeks.

Our first meeting of 2021 (1/15 @ 6:30 PM) will be another chill Gallery Night. Show off the work you have done over the last few months for all of us to see and praise with love and compliments.

Submit your art to our shared Google Drive folder so that we can pull it up at the meeting. It can be animation reels, sketchbook pages, illustrations, comic pages, etc.

Good day, all! Happy Holidays!

And happy end of finals!! You guys’ve got this! Big thanks to everyone who attended the talk with Ngozi Ukazu last week- that was a blast and was super informative! For those who missed it, the recording will be available as a link to our Google Drive and pinned in the #announcements channel. We’ll ping everyone who’s subscribed to the @Update role when that’s ready. As per our usual custom, the final meeting of the year will be a Holiday Art Trade! As both gifts of good will for the season and as a little reward for getting this far in the hellish year we’ve all had. We’ll be sending a short google form at the beginning of the meeting in lieu of our usual getting slips of paper out of a bucket as for who gets whose drawing assignment!

While you’re participating in the trade or if you don’t feel like drawing for someone, we’ll also be screening Into The Spiderverse in the #Table-2 voice/video chat! As per usual we’ll be asking you all to stay muted in that chat, but in #Table-1 we’ll be chatting while we art trade :D
