..This s'been an uneventful day.
Sigurd probably could have assumed that this would have occurred at some point or another in time. With all the conflicts between the most sovereign nations, he supposed it came as no surprise that the apocalypse had begun prematurely. Some people would disagree, and continue to hold onto the…
Walking on impure snow, mixed with ash and blood, Kiku was starting to wish he’d stayed on his small island and waited for the inevitable end. As smothered in smoke and destruction as it was it was still home. He’d almost have endured the suffocating air, the falling rubble, the remnants of once great monuments that made his heart ache for the days of old and the constantly growing number of corpses of his people for it. Almost.
Although the war should have been forbidden to him- it was written in his very constitution- when chaos had once again engulfed the world, due to a tangled web of alliances and masked warnings he’d been forced to join it. He supposed he was lucky to still be alive. Or unlucky, depending on the perspective.
His body trembling from exhaustion he allowed himself a gulp of the tainted air. The war had taken its toll on him, as it had every nation, even the few who’d managed to stay neutral- they’d been caught in the crossfire. It still raged, most could barely remember what had sparked it but it had gone on so long they’d forgotten how to bring peace. In a way it was easier for the last few nations to carry on fighting to the end rather than try and save a world beyond repair.
As he paused to rest he noticed something he’d given up seeing- a familiar face.
It was by now that Sigurd had lost track of the passing days. He couldn’t be certain on how far he had walked since his journey had first begun from his own country, but judging from the distance covered at the current moment in time against the pace of his slow trudge, it had been at least several weeks.
Normally the Norwegian, along with his other Scandinavian counterparts, was particularly well-adapted to such harsh conditions, and had certainly obtained an amount of stamina that would be favoured by many athletes across the globe. But the effects of the radiation were beginning to express themselves, and the impact on his physical health was alarming, to say the least. His muscles ached and tingled with great fatigue, and his legs dragged lethargically against the loosened dust across the ground.
Despite the probable fate that loomed overhead, a flicker of something deep in his chest rose when a silhouette cleared the dust in the near distance. From where he stood, he could identify the figure as a man, short in height and under average in build. Within a few more long strides, all suspicions were cleared, and a face he’d never expected to come across again filled his view. Lowering the cloth from around his mouth, he croaked out to the Japanese man. ”…Personifikasjon av Japan.”
After days and days of seeing only corpses- people killed by the cold and hunger, it was a relief to see someone still alive, let alone another nation. He knew little of the Scandinavian nation or what had once been Northern Europe in general but hope flared inside him. There was something about loneliness that made despair breed.
The Norwegian looked bedraggled; neutrality hadn’t shielded him from the chaos, and his exhaustion showed. He spoke in what Kiku presumed was his own tongue although it was simple enough to guess the meaning. Guessing English was the only language they’d have in common he forced the words from his memory, it had been a long while since he’d last spoke, let alone in another language. Taking another painful breath he coughed, “…Norway. Been a long time.” The old World meetings felt like eons ago, so far from living memory the days of peace had became myth.
His ears picked up the sound of faint English, taking a few moments to decipher what was being said to him under the thick accent, coupled with a sympathetic wince for the rasping wheeze that came with it. Of course, Kiku had been hit harder than most of the others; at least, that was one of the final messages he'd managed to receive through the radio. By now Sigurd had been forced to become completely oblivious to everyone around him. He had been left unaware of the state of the rest of the world, and could only hope things couldn't possible become worse.
"S'been an awfully long time, Kiku." He nodded with a thick swallow, shoving his hands into his pockets as he continued to watch the shorter man. From what he could picture of the Asian before the entire calamity, it was evident that the changes of nuclear war had affected both his physical appearance and mental stability. The steps he took were lethargic and heavy, and his eyes seemed to droop with the exhaustion he must have been feeling. He wasn't fit for travel at all. Alas, it seemed that neither Japan had much of a choice in the matter, either. Unsure of how to bring up a conversation befitting the current situation, the Norwegian decided to instead state his condolences to the other, clearing his throat before he opened his mouth. "M'sorry about the war in your country. Heard 'bout it a few weeks back."
