how do you feel about your couple? why did you pick the person you picked?

licking his lips, bash nodded. this was an obvious question. “i’m feeling pretty good about me & jenn,” he said. “i mean, this whole environment is very intense & it’s only been a week so it’s hard to tell if she’s you know...the one. but we’ve been getting along well so far.” thinking back to the coupling night, bash remembered being relieved that he & jennifer had been paired up together, because even though they had just met, he had more of a foundation with her than with anyone else on the island. “i think we picked each other because we had positive previous interactions. we also work in similar industries so i feel like that might’ve played a bit of a role in it? it didn’t really for me, because things like status & occupation aren’t my top priority but it could’ve still given us more common ground.”

were you nervous during the coupling ceremony, or did you feel at ease? 

“i think i was pretty much at ease.” bash wasn’t much of a nervous person when it came to those kinds of things. his nervousness came into play when it came to other people more than it did himself. “the only thing i was little bit nervous about was if i was coupled up with someone & we didn’t get along at all. but that didn’t happen.”

is there anyone in the villa that you’re not vibing with? why?

bash pursed his lips before answering, “i guess...uh saint? he was just really weird to me when i asked him if he wanted cookie batter. like i’m sure he’s nice & all, but it did give me kind of a weird vibe. because i mean...who doesn’t like cookie batter?”

when was your last relationship? why or how did it end? 

bash hadn’t really talked about his personal life yet, which was something he was sort of hoping to avoid. when it came to his fans, they could be incredibly supportive but some of them didn’t understand boundaries & became invasive. he decided to keep it as vague as possible so that people couldn’t speculate who he was talking about. “my last relationship ended about a year ago. we were together for around six months,” he started. “the reason it ended was mostly because of scheduling. we were both too busy to keep up a relationship. it happens a lot.”

describe your ideal date

bash rubbed his hands together & then gave the camera a little wink before bursting out laughing. “sorry, i’m just being goofy,” he said, putting his fist under his chin & flashing a wide grin. “i guess my ideal date would be a home-cooked meal & maybe a movie. it would have to be a movie that means something, that we can talk about afterwards. those kinds of movies are the best kinds of movies. like...i would love a date where we just binge watched coming of age films like lady bird, eighth grade, & moonlight. you know, the kind of movies that make you think & feel.”

have any of the new islanders caught your eye? and if you’re new, who’s attention were you hoping to catch?

“i guess the only thing that’s caught my attention about any newcomers is that basher & i practically have the same name & nickname. plus, we’re both actors. but other than that, i’ve been mostly focused on trying to get to know everyone & become accustomed to the environment of the villa.”

are your parents watching the show? what do you think they’re saying about you?

bash laughed. “yeah, they’re watching the show but i don’t think they understand it completely. they’re kind of old & they don’t really get reality tv shows that much,” he explained. “but my siblings are definitely watching.” bash looked up for a quick second, his smile going from a grin to something of a sad smile before reverting back to his usual demeanor. “they’re probably saying how terrible my puns are. & they’re not! my puns are great.”

Licking away the batter, Jennifer thinks for a moment. She’d never been called anything other than ‘Jenn’ for the majority of her life, so the idea of a new nickname wasn’t something that she’d thought about – though it was interesting at the same time. “Hm. What about…” she trails off, but quickly changes her mind, eyes looking in Bash’s. “You know what? I’d like to see what you can come up with.” Jennifer knew she also wasn’t very creative – or, at least, that’s what she assumed of herself anyway – so this was an easy way to bring the attention off herself (for now). “We can make a contest out of it,” she adds. “If I like it, then you get something from me, but if I don’t, then I get something from you. How about it?”

bash notices some batter on jennifer’s face. he quickly licks his finger and wipes it off her face. he pondered her request, trying to think of a nickname that would suit her and be creative at the same time. he was lucky -- his parents had done all of the work for him with his unique nickname. “hmm... that sounds like a good deal.” bash furrowed his brows as he tried to think of a nickname. his eyes lit up when he thought of a couple that he thought were good. “oh! how about something like bluejay, because your first initial is j and you look good in blue. or something like, fer?” he knew the last one was a bit of a stretch but then again, he was doing his best. “or maybe jc like jlo?”

“Do I look like I want salmonella?” Saint deadpans the question, looking around the somewhat messy kitchen with more than a little bit of judgement on his features. Almost everyone around here is so wholesome — with the exception of his current fascination, Roo — and he finds it strange and a little bit foreign to have nobody to be mean to or to banter with to any degree. Most conversation where he starts off playfully negative end up getting dropped, but he tells himself that’s only because they don’t understand his sense of humor. “If you have any chocolate chips, I’ll take some of those.” Moving towards a clear space on the counter, Saint hoists himself up onto it, kicking his feet back and forth against the lower cupboard.

“uh well, people always say that it’s worth the risk, right?” bash said, not really sure what to say. he had grown up eating the batter out of the bowl with his siblings, and none of them had ever gotten salmonella. in fact, one of his brothers told him that if he had gotten salmonella from eating batter, he would still eat the batter. bash nodded and tossed a bag of chocolate chips to the counter that saint was sitting on. “are you sure you don’t want the batter? i mean, more for me.” he shrugged as he grabbed a spoon and dug into the batter.

Jennifer had been napping on a lounge chair casually, but quickly the smell of whatever was coming from the kitchen wafted towards her nose. The girl pushed her sunglasses up to the top of her head, adjusted her bikini and smiled when she saw it was the other half of her couple doing the baking. “Cute!” the girl responds with a smile. She stands, dark hair cascading down her back, leaning against the countertop. “But, to answer your question, yes. Absolutely. Hand me that spoon,” she laughs, reaching toward the item. “Oh, also! I’ve been meaning to talk to you!” Jennifer stands upright, looking at Sebastian. “It’s exciting to be coupled up, isn’t it?” she wiggles her eyebrows up and down in a joking manner, chuckling. “I’m excited to get to know you better, Bash.”

bash gave jennifer one of his signature smiles when he noticed her coming in the kitchen. they had just been coupled up recently, and he couldn’t say that he was mad about it. they seemed to be getting on pretty well so far, and he was excited to see what it could possibly grow into. he gladly hands her the spoon as he takes a clean one to dig into the batter himself. “yeah!” he agreed, giving her a thumbs up sign. “i’m excited to get to know you better too...do you have a nickname other than like, jenn, that i can call you?”

admittedly , roy had been starving , craving something ( anything ) sweet . given he hadn’t eaten all day , it made sense . of course , the smell of something sweet immediately drew roy to head towards it , leading him to the kitchen and a boy with dirty blonde hair . ‘ you don’t know how bad i’ve been craving something sweet , my god , yes . ’ he heads over to grab a spoon from the cabinet and steps to stand beside the other . ‘ you really think that’s a good idea ? what if one of them become your enemies ? ’

bash hadn’t really interacted with roy, so he was happy to see a new face when the other walked into the kitchen. he was happy to give some of the batter to his fellow islander, as he had baked more than he needed just so that he and others would be able to eat the batter. ‘ i feel you, i have such a sweet tooth. ’ when roy talked about enemies, all the other could do was shrug. ‘ with friends like these, who needs enemies ? or as someone underwater would say: what fronds like these, who needs anemones ? ’

bash was slowly getting more used to the environment of love island. while everything did seem a little too luxurious for the humble brunette, he was slowly becoming accustomed to the place and its amenities. he especially liked how spacious the kitchen was -- the kitchen in the house where his parents and siblings live was so much smaller and there was normally only room for one person to be cooking. it was nice to have some more space, especially given how he was baking many batches of cookies. ‘ hey, i’m making some cookies. do you wanna take a spoon & eat some of the batter with me ? ’ he asked to the person who walked into the kitchen. ‘ i’m thinking of decorating them with people’s names or something once they’re done. ’

“Your little sister, huh? That’s adorable. Tell her I said she’s lovely whenever you speak to her again.” Henry doesn’t know when that’s going to be; the call home they got to do last season wasn’t until almost the very end, which makes sense. Henry didn’t take the opportunity for what it was, truth be told. Speaking to his father was pretty much the last thing on his list of things that he wanted to do, and it still is now. The two had gotten into an uproarious fight during the break (one of many), and some of the things that had been yelled at him are sticking with Henry far more than he wishes for them to. “I can fix us drinks, if you’d like. Or do you prefer a beer? Wine?”

“oh i definitely will. that will make her day,” he replied. bash let out an even bigger smile, thinking of his sister and the rest of his siblings. the one thing he wasn’t looking forward to was not being able to be around or in contact with his family for the duration of the show. he walked towards the backyard where henry was sitting and said, “wine would be lovely,” he replied. he wasn’t a big drinker but wine was one of the drinks that he had grown to love more and more because it was what his parents always had, and what he would sometimes sneak sips of.

“Well, to me, that’s unique,” Jennifer replies with a smile. Of all the newbies, this guy was the cutest (so far). He seemed to give off very genuine vibes to the girl; they were something that was drawing her toward him subconsciously. “It’s something that makes you memorable. A good name and a good personality? You must really be a catch to all the girls, huh?” The girl chuckles at her joke. The shameless flirting comes naturally during this conversation – Jennifer can’t help it. She’s used to flirting back at home in California (especially during the hot summers when all the teens ran around the beach unsupervised), so it’s almost like riding a bicycle now – the ‘skills’ aren’t something you really forget. “Anyways,” Jennifer says next, “What are you most looking forward to from this season?”

“well thanks!” bash said, he was never the best at accepting compliments. sure, he was confident in some things but he never really loved showing off despite being an actor. “heh, i guess. it’s kind of hard to have a social life or anything like that with my work schedule though,” he admitted, which was one of the reasons he was on the show. between going to acting classes, auditions, and shoots, it was almost impossible to carve out time for romance, no matter how much he wished he could. “i guess just getting to know everyone? and the potential to find someone. i mean, that’s why we’re all here, right?”

“Bash,” she repeats, shaking his hand and then letting her own fall away. “What a unique name. Or, nickname, I guess I should say.” Jennifer chuckles a little, still interested in the topic though by the look in her eyes. “Where’d you get it? Did you come up with it? Or was it someone else? Please, give me all the details – don’t skimp out on me now.” The girl jokes around with him, moving closer with each question being spoken aloud.

“it might as well be my name, to be honest,” he said with a laugh. “not many people call me sebastian, and some people have tried to call me seb but it just never sticks.” bash had answered these kinds of questions about his nickname before. it was normal -- because most people with his name either went with the nickname seb or sebas, but rarely bash. he gave her another smile, his supply of them seemingly endless. “my family gave it to me. i don’t think there’s really a story to it other than the fact that my mom and dad really liked the sound of it better than other nicknames. yeah, i guess some people would think of it as like that embarrassing nickname from when they were little, but it always stuck with me. because of the people who gave it to me.”

“I suppose you’re probably right about that, though even in that case, the people don’t always change.” Proof of that is him standing here again, surrounded by the familiar decor, and he can’t really say why he felt the need to return other than to try again. Most people are doing it for other reasons, but Henry still has hope — as silly as it may seem — that he’ll be able to find somebody here. Maybe more than one ‘somebody’, if he’s very lucky. Unlikely. “Nice to meet you. I’m Henry.” Introducing himself out of habit, Henry takes a step towards the backyard, thinking for a moment. “Would you like to join me?”

“that is true,” bash agreed, with a nod. “by the way, my little sister said that she had a giant crush on you last season and i...i can already see her slapping me for saying that on national television.” his eyes wandered over towards where henry was and a smile crept up on his face. he knew that he was personable, but he was kind of worried about making friends in such an intense environment. he was glad that he and henry could start some form of a friendship, from what he could tell. “sure, yeah, thanks.”

are you excited about joining the love island cast for season two? why or why not?

this was an easy question for bash to answer, as the excitement had been evident on his face since day one. it was practically spilling out of him -- with every smile and laugh. he gave a nod before answering, “i’m definitely excited to be here. it’s an amazing opportunity to be able to get a chance to find the right person for me. after all, isn’t love what it’s all about, really, at the end of the day?” 

who on the island do you think is the most fit? what about them makes them attractive to you?

he bit his lip, pondering for a bit. part of him was trying to remember each and every islander he had met and the other part of him was trying to factor in things like interactions he had with them and all of that stuff. “i think that jenn is pretty cute. she was nice to me when we first got here. but i also think jasmine is really attractive, or um...fit...as you said, because i just love the fact that she’s a baker. some of my best memories with my mom are baking with her, so yeah, i guess i just have an affinity for bakers?”

who do you think you probably won’t get on with? why or why not?

“i’m not sure, to be honest,” he said with a shrug. “if there’s anyone who has a problem with me, they haven’t voiced it and i haven’t seemed to have a problem with anyone.” he was also very careful to not have problems with other people and not have other people have problems with him. as outgoing and charming as he was, he could often be irresolute and conflict avoidant. he liked to fix things more than he liked to break things. 

what did you think of season one? did you agree with the winning couple that was announced? why or why not?

bash gave the camera another smile. “me and my sister would watch it every week even though we live hours apart and then call each other to talk about it. it was so addicting, it became almost like a ritual for us. we both really liked the ending couple, it was really cute.”

would you sleep with someone on the show? what is your reasoning?

the bluntness of the question made bash visibly uncomfortable, as you could tell by his shifting in the chair and combing through his hair. he lets out a laugh that could only be described as something between forced and nervous. “i...uh...i don’t know, to be honest? my mom is watching this so no.”
