The LCpl Nicholas S. Perez Literary Canon
How amazing are all you teachers?!
We got together at the end of May to question what people might consider the children’s literary canon. We pulled out hundreds of books and analyzed all day. And this is what you came up with!
Here are the general guidelines regarding the Perez Canon of Literature.
-Every classroom teacher will use these 8 books as part of their reading and writing instruction. We know you will use many more books than what are listed here. But these books will find a way into your curriculum and you will provide meaningful learning experiences with these books.
-No book is off-limits. If you know that students have already read a book in previous years, you can still use it again. “Remember that beautiful book you read in 2nd grade? Today, we’re going to look at it again with new eyes.” Just be considerate of a book you know will come up in your students’ future. If you know your students will read the book next year, you might look for an alternative.
-This canon should grow and change. We know new, beautiful books will be published each year. Let’s look at our canon again in May for the next year to see if there are changes we want to make.
-These texts were chosen by Perez teachers using the Teaching Tolerance Tool for Selecting Diverse Texts. Teachers thought about their students and their students’ families to look for connections to literature. You might use the Tool for Selecting Diverse Texts as you select other literature to bring into your classroom.
-This work is important. You are making sure children feel seen and heard in the school setting. You are acknowledging language, culture, and lived experiences of children and bringing that into your classroom. You are pioneers. You are revolutionary. You are making a difference. Thank you.
Ask Randi or me if you need to locate a book.
Love you, #TeamPerez
