Dear Men,
Who is your Mr. Darcy??
Everyone knows of the unending love that many, many women have for Pride & Prejudice — and most especially for Mr. Darcy.
He is a man that, while bit rude or arrogant in the beginning, shows himself to be unashamedly loyal, honest, kind, willing to admit fault, and most importantly loves and provides for Elizabeth — not to win her love, but because he loves her. Mr. Darcy walking through the foggy, cold fields in the early morning, barely dressed, focused solely on getting to Elizabeth to see if there is any chance she could love him (and yet, making sure she knows he will not pressure her if her feelings haven’t changed) is 😚🤌🏻 🤎😭 It’s unmatched. His faults are because he’s human, not “toxic,” and in my opinion, he is one of the greatest depictions of masculinity in the romance genre. (There’s so much more that could be said about his character, but we can save that for later.)
I truly believe that if men want to understand the female mind and what we desire or find attractive, understanding why Mr. Darcy is so loved is a brilliant place to start.
What I want (nay, need) to know, gentlemen, is who is your Mr. Darcy? If Pride & Prejudice is the female “Roman Empire,” what is your Pride & Prejudice?
There are so many gaps in women’s understanding of the male brain. I think in todays culture, when men express what they desire or find attractive or unattractive, many women don’t believe it. They write it off as just one mans preferences or even impossible because of their own view. But there has to be a piece of literature or film or something that resonates with as many men as P&P does with women. Something we could look at to try and understand what men so long for when it comes to romantic love.
Part of me is scared someone’s going to write “porn” and I want to stop you right there. If porn is where you find your feminine ideal, you’re in the wrong place. Genuine, mature, mentally healthy answers only, please. 🙏🏻
