I wholeheartedly agree with most everything in this post, except for the notion that Papyrus doesn’t return Sans’s love, and I would like to add my own comments here. Yes, although Papyrus doesn’t show much awareness to the human of the things Sans does for him, he does return Sans’s love, and his care and concern for his brother is always obvious. All of Papyrus’s scolding and worrying IS the manifestation of his love, in contrast to the passive favors and admiration that Sans’s love manifests as; this is right in line with Papyrus’s more motivated and almost high-strung personality. Big examples (spoilers):

* Calling Papyrus in the room in Waterfall with the prank telescope when Sans isn’t there yields: “HUH? SANS ISN’T PLAYING WITH HIS TELESCOPE? WOWIE!!! MAYBE HE WENT TO WORK!!! WOW!!! AM I ALLOWED TO BE PROUD???”

* Calling Papyrus by the door to the ruins yields: “ HMMMM… THE STRANGE DOOR IN THE WOODS. ACTUALLY, MY BROTHER SPENDS A LOT OF TIME HERE. WHAT’S HE DOING…? I’VE GOT TO KEEP HIM ON THE STRAIGHT AND NARROW!!!”

* In the neutral ending in which Papyrus becomes ruler of the underground, he says in the phone call:
