1/21/2016 This time of year, we have to be careful not to step on rough-skinned newts making pilgrimage to the duck pond. They are very poisonous - tetrodotoxin, same as pufferfish, just turns your nervous system off like a light switch - and it makes them utterly stone cold fearless. They just amble down the middle of the pasture paths, like, “go around me, mammal.” They walk straight through the chicken run in lines and make the peacocks step over them nervously.

The only thing that can eat them and live - sometimes - is garter snakes who are partly immune to tetrodotoxin. Not 100% immune, though, so the garter snake puts the newt’s head in its mouth and tries to guess whether this particular newt is too poisonous for eating. Most of the time it is, so the snake spits out the newt, the newt gives the snake an vaguely annoyed look and continues on its way to the duckpond

Once they get to the duckpond, they have sex for something like 40 hours at a time. Rough skinned newts are kind of awesome.
