It's so heartbreaking looking back at the first two episodes and how much of Steven's life was built around his mother-- living in her flat, the postcards, the daily voice-mails, the "laters gators".

Marc wants so badly to love his mother and be loved by her, but is only able to as Steven. Because Steven doesn't remember all the terrible stuff (and doesn't know she's dead). The "laters gators" phrase perfectly shows how Steven's relationship with his mother is a reconstruction of what that was like before his brother's death. But back then the phrase came with a reply-- "in a while crocodile". And we've yet to see anyone actually complete the exchange with Steven. Steven is so open and honest and vulnerable (in all the ways Marc can't be) and he's desperately looking for love but ultimately he's still completely isolated when the series starts.
