Blog: The talk T'Challa had with his father... that most black kids will never get.
So If you are reading this ... THERE WILL BE SPOILERS ... you have been warned.
So when I watched #blackpanter for the third time (and I would go again if I was not broke) I kept going back to the scene when T’Challa goes back to the ancestral plain and he was able to speak to his father T'Chaka about leaving his brother ( N'Jobu ) child, N'Jadaka aka Erik Stevens aka Killmonger. ( I know that is a lot but once you see the movie it will make sense) . He is able to tell his father that he was wrong to leave his nephew because at the end the boy grew up to be a man that would kill and/ or destroy anything to avenge his father's death. It made me think about all the things I wanted to say to my father before his stroke that I would never be able to say now because I would not get the reaction or understanding that I am seeking.
My father was absent for most of my life so there was some resentment. I do want to mention that my father took care of me the only way he knew how which was with money. I think that I only lived with my father for about 5 years of my childhood, but he always made sure I had what I needed or wanted to make up for the fact that he could not physically be there. I think that my dad was scared to be a physically present parent because his father left him at 3, but I don't really know and that is something that I can not ask him because he does not understand nor does he remember at this point. When T’Challa was able to talk to his father about his fears and hopes for his people and how he wanted to be a good King, he was able to lay all of those emotions at his father's feet and to get one last bit of guidance from him.
I did find it interesting that even in death, his father was trying to hide the truth about his brother’s death and the Wakandan - American son that they left behind. So I guess even if my father understood he probably would never let me know everything but at least T’Challa had the chance that I never will. I would say that if you have the opportunity to talk to your parents about things that hurt you or damage you, talk to them, even if it's awkward, even if you think they will not understand. Do it anyway because you never know when the last time is the last time. Living with regrets sucks so, be honest, and get free.
