About a year and half ago I wrote a song about an incredible story, the story of a girl who always lived on the outside, looking in. Figuratively and literally. The juxtaposition of her loneliness and independence. Her longing and her stillness. Her curiosity and fear, all tangled up. Her persisting gentleness… and the world’s betrayal of it. I wrote this one alone in the middle of the night and then Aaron Dessner and I meticulously worked on a sound that we felt would be authentic to the moment in time when this story takes place. I made a wish that one day you would hear it. ‘Carolina’ is out now 🥺

Happiness x Out of The Woods parallel

I’m kinda freaking out about this. So happiness™️ is about a relationship where both people loved each other but they couldn’t make it work and Taylor is singing about how they’ll find happiness eventually but it sucks atm. OOTW™️ is about a super rocky relationship in which nothing was clear and everything was shaky and she couldn’t see what was coming next. Like in happiness™️, this relationship is intense and wonderful but they just can’t find the common ground that will give them stability.

In the first line of happiness, she says “honey when I’m above the trees, I see this for what it is” ABOVE THE TREES MEAING “WHEN IM OUT OF THE WOODS”! when she’s out of the woods, she can finally see that relationship for what it actually is. It’s literally like the acceptance stage of ootw, it’s the clean™️ of out of the woods. She can finally see past her furry and see clearly that the relationship didn’t break Bc someone was bad, it broke because they weren’t stable together. Just like what ootw was about... her mind 👁👄👁
