so, i tried drawing night furies based on using big cats as my reference

this is a very rough sketch that i managed (that somehow took me three hours)

i will add more commentary later, but here are some of the things i’ve learned

- jaguars and panthers are very fluid, and it’s easy to exaggerate their shapes and motion

- toothless (and httyd dragons in general) are heavily stylised, so i think using this method requires a lot of understanding of night fury anatomy, BUT using big cats as references helps to understand how the limbs connect and how they move, and it’s pretty difficult to find references i think

i don’t think this is my best work :// his forelegs are awkwardly positioned and it was doing my head in. his torso could also be longer and slimmer, maybe more exaggerated, but that could also be a style preference? i might try again tomorrow with more sleep and see if i learn anything new. i also think big cats are great for referencing night fury patterns as well? also mackerel!

My little pieces of inspiration have arrived! (Well, last week, to be precise).

I'm so unbelievably happy :> My own little Veigar and Lulu, finally on my desk. I'm hoping they'll whisper dark, whimsical secrets to me and inspire new stories, lol.

Although, judging by his expression, I'm not sure Veigar is whispering. I think he's one incantation away from turning my keyboard into a portal to the Shadow Isles. A valid reaction to my writing, some might say.

And Lulu... well, let's just say there was a tiny, immediate heist. My little daughter claimed her almost instantly. I might need to have a serious talk about how these are for "admiring," not for games...

It's a physical reminder of a big project I finished, my long VeiLu fic. Do I get pangs of embarrassment over it now? Maybe. Yeah. The writer's curse. But I'm physically restraining myself from deleting it. I poured too much heart (and sweat over the English translation) into it. It's a part of my journey :)
