this is so random but i can't shake the thought of bucky meeting and being smitten with reader in the 1940's. he'd do the classic wine and dine and take her out dancing, have matching heart shaped lockets with each others' photos in them, and send letters while he was out in the field. and just before he left for the alps, he gave her a plastic ring he won at a carnival, and promised to give her the real thing when he came back home from war.

bucky later finds the lockets, letters, and the ring at a war memorial museum dedicated to war widows. she got her own display because she had the most extensive collection. there are more letters there dated after the day he was determined MIA, and he realizes she never stopped writing because she still believed him to be alive. her last letter was written on her death bed, saying her only regret in life is that she didn't have more time to wait for her soldier to come home.

bucky nearly sobs when he reads the lil information tag that says "y/n barnes, 1917-2004. widow of james buchanan barnes, 1917-1943."

she took his name and considered him her husband even though she never got to say "i do."
