Benkei had been talking with her mother easily when someone ran through the guild doors. Pausing she glanced to the side seeing her dear friend running for the stairs, “Hoshi-” She attempted greeting the other before she ran past without slowing, disappearing upstairs with a slam of her door.

Concern immediately filled her as she heard the slam, body tensing up. What had happened. Offering an apology to her mother, and promise to pick up the conversation later, before giving a brief bow and running up the stairs after the younger girl.. Slowing her stride she approached the door, turning and shooting a stern glare at guild mates who were coming down the hall, gesturing for them to return downstairs. They did so without a question. Turning to the door she heard the muffled sobbing, resting her hand on the door before giving a gentle knock on the door. “Hoshi… Will you open up sweetheart?”

She heard the soft voice. A voice that made her feel slightly more calm. The one she looked up to, trusted with anything. She tried to stop crying, but she couldn’t. Wiping some tears away, only to have more come down, she attempted to stand.

Turning to immediately grip the doorknob, she stumbled, nearly falling. Her thoughts took her over for a moment. What would it be like if Hiroshi was here? Could she turn around and see him, smiling at her? Hugging her, telling her everything would be ok. That he was better now. That he’d gotten away from that evil guild.

She couldn’t help but look back. And she was met with an empty room. A box caught her eye. Her father had given it to her. A jewelry box. And inside, the only piece in there, was a necklace her brother had given her on her ninth birthday. A silver chain, with a silver hanging heart on the end. It used to make her smile. It used to bring her hope. But as the years went by, it only got sadder. She never did have the courage to put it away, though. 

Turning back to the door, and coming back down to her senses, she realized she was crying even harder now. Taking a deep, shaking breath, she opened the door, and looked up at Benkei. 

“H-H-Hiroshi...he’s...he’s...” She couldn’t. She couldn’t bear to say it. Beginning to sob harder, she fell into the older girl, wrapping her arms tightly around her. As if clinging to her for dear life.

Hoshi ran back to her room immediately, slamming the door. Tears fell from her cheeks, one after the other. Leaning up against it, she stared out into her room. Why did she feel so empty now? Sliding down, she hugged her knees to her chest and dropped her head down, sobbing.

“Hoshi...” She said softly. Taking a breath, she spoke again, with a bit more attempted confidence. “I was...wondering if you knew where I could find a library?”

After what she’d been told, she was in shock. No. No, there was no way her brother could have died, two years ago...she’d seen him, just three years ago! Even if he was in a dark guild. Even if she ran away...in confusion, in fear...like a coward...

They used to be so close. Inseparable. He helped teach her magic, he was there when she had nightmares. Shut out from most of the rest of the world by their parents, they only had each other. 

But he’d left her...she’d been so confused. Scared. What if he’d been taken? But then she saw him there...not against his will. Working with that dark guild...with a smile. 

She was so angry. Furious. But also...terrified. She wanted to find him one day. To help him. To make things the way they were before.

                                          But now...he was gone.

                                              Hiroshi was dead.
