She tried to ignore his first words, even if there was much choice for her, loyalty and family came before all others for Kat, and that was part of the problem, the lines were quickly blurring of those she cared for that were getting hurt in this mess. A sigh escaped her, watching him with a quiet smile, this position as clan leader suited him, “I wish I had done anything, it feels like I sat idly by while he destroyed places and people we both care for, in search of something I’m not sure can even be achieved anymore.”

Her grin didn’t fade, there were many things that Katerina had once been frightened of that she no longer allowed bother her, threats of death were just another one on the long list lately. despite the craziness that was going on around them, and the worry that seeped into his being and threatened to swallow him whole, enzo managed to notice the way her nails were digging into her palms at her sides. she wasn’t to blame for any of this. he knew that, he did, and yet, there was that hint of jealousy in him, jealousy of the bond she shared with the man behind everything. he was too angry to see his feelings for what they were, to rationalize this encounter ( when had he been able to be rational where katerina was involved, anyways? with her he was all passion and emotion ) or to even show just how much he had missed her, and how badly it had hurt to see her leave again. ❝ anna. ❞ he said without hesitation, the concern on his features all the more evident now. ❝ i need to take care of this, put the fire out, help the pack but ─ ❞ he paused, biting his bottom lip harshly. ❝ i need to know that she’s okay, kat. ❞

Really she should have expected it, for him to pull away sooner than she wanted, after all her best friend had just set his bar alight and Kat had been stood outside right in time to see the carnage unfold. The moment he spoke Annas name, it was easy for her to put her focus there too, she may not be able to help Enzo anymore but she could keep his one person safe. Kat nodded, palms red with blood as she dug her nails in harder, taking a step back before she caved on her desire to kiss him, to try and make this all alright for him, it was all her fault in the first place, right? “I’ll find her, I’ll call Max and I’ll get her safe. Just--” She paused, eyes flicking between him, the floor and the drops of blood she could see threatening to fall, adding to the mess in front of his bar, “Just stay safe okay? I’ll get some help out here too as soon as I find her.”

Kat might not have been around often, if at all, but if there was one thing the werecat had learnt working behind a bar; it was that you always knew a boss’s preference. Nodding faintly at the following words, she grabbed a clean glass and poured some of the rum into it. “Yeah, I saw the carnage…” Bo trailed off slightly, placing the bottle down in front of the woman. “’Least no one got hurt, I guess.” The brunette added, still unsure of her own stance on the whole thing, but knowing how close Kat was to this…cause. Honestly, she felt more mundane than not these days with everything she didn’t know. If it wasn’t for Blair, she’d still be completely in the dark. Ensuring everyone was out of earshot, Isabeau leaned in closer, more curious about lines in the sand than anything. “So your guy’s pretty serious about this whole thing, huh?” 

There were too many familiar faces in the town, it still bothered her occasionally, after so long of isolation her mind played games on her too often and that was when she ended up here, getting to the bottom of a bottle in her own bar. A frown crossed her features at the mention of the mess in town, sipping from the glass with a tiny shrug, what was there that she could say? Nobody got killed, this time. Kat sighed, shaking her head, there were only a few people she truly loved in this world and they were all at war with one another, leaving her in the middle praying to gods she didn’t believe in anymore. “He’s not my guy.” She mumbled, an almost automatic response at this point but giving another shrug, “Yknow what? I don’t even know anymore, his plans seemed...smart, but now it’s just a mess.”

     seeing the face before him, adrian was taken aback for a moment, the look of surprise flashing on his face for a split second before he fixed his posture and expression. throwing the rock to the side by a single hand, he dusted his palms off by clapping them down a few times, giving a shake of his head. “ that’s what i’m trying to figure. ” he replied, straight to the point. but then again, for how long he was going to ignore her presence, or the effect of it on him, by keeping it that way ? not long, apparently. “ great timing to come back, ‘rina. ”

She felt guilty, of all the things that Kat could have processed, this wasn’t one of them. Seeing him here, caring so much about so many other people and then there was the way he looked at her, something in his eyes she could never figure out. “I didn’t have much choice.” Kat sighed, the nickname tugging at a part of her heart she thought she had lost a long time ago, “You probably think I’m crazy, huh? To be by his side?”

     “ mhm. welcome home, then. or whatever’s left of it, y’know. ” words lacking sincerity in great amounts, the werewolf crossed her arms over the almost seven-month bump, feeling no less dominant or strong against the mermaid. it wasn’t like she would dare to lay a hand on her, anyway, but this was a way of her getting ready in the case of a verbal fight. “ from a gal to another, take it as you may, you shouldn’t have come back. ” she said, unable to help a low growl escaping her lips after the other’s words. “ che cazzo ? my loyalties lay within enzo, the pack and —- max… here. ” she finally said, hissing when she remembered once again who katerina was to him. “ i, for one, don’t run. ”

It was a struggle not to feel completely protective of Anna, especially now she was pregnant, over the years she had come to care for the wolf even if she wasn’t officially Enzos daughter or sister or..whatever it was they were. Knowing that the bump was part Max was strange too, she had spent such a long time literally attached to the Shadowhunter that she knew how much it meant to him, to find love like this. At the mention of loyalty to Enzo, Katerinas eyes closed, there was definite sadness there, and for Max too, someone she had confided in over many drinks. “I know.” She muttered, she knew that running wasn’t an option for Anna and yet she almost wanted to beg her to, find a way to get her out of town. “I’m trying, I wish I could say that he’s evil and twisted and that I’m against all he does but you know as well as anyone how cruel the Clave can be.” Another sigh, and Kat stepped forward, still cautious, “I’m sorry I wasn’t..yknow...better for him.”

( it was three. there was no way he could forget. ) and now, there she was, standing in front of his bar that was currently being torn to flames, and yet, he couldn’t help but want to reach out for her. talk about timing. not only was that his bar burning down, those were also his wolves running around. his pack. so much had changed since she left, but he couldn’t even begin to wrap his mind around all of it, not now. as she rested her forehead against his, he allowed himself to close his eyes for a brief moment, breathing in her scent again after what felt like forever. ❝ i’m okay. ❞ he mumbled quietly, pulling away again. he wanted to say that no, leo would fix it, but he bit his tongue. ❝ but that doesn’t matter. what the fuck was he thinking? ‘sure, i’ll just set the werewolf bar on fire, burn a few dogs, that will get the clave’s attention’. ❞ he angrily mimicked leo’s accent, rolling his eyes in annoyance. ❝ i need to get this under control. i can’t let my people suffer because of the dumbfuck. ❞

The moment that he pulled away from her and broke the spell, Kat wanted to scream, to do what so many expected of her and throw a tantrum, this wasn’t fair, this wasn’t right. Instead she sighed, looking around them as he spoke, she could see the mess that had been made, but she could also hear that nobody had been seriously hurt. It didn’t make it right, the mermaid knew that, but at least there wasn’t another death on her conscience. “I don’t know.” Her admission was quiet, the knot of anger growing, nails digging into palms now that they couldn’t touch him, “You think I have any control over what he does?!” She looked up, spiteful and angry eyes searching his as she bit back the words she wanted to say, it had been bad enough to kill for a spell, this was chaos for the sake of chaos and for the first time in her life, Katerina was starting to doubt one of the only other people to truly know her, “How can I help Enzo, anything, please?”

his clothes were a scorched mess, his ( second favorite, it was important to notice ) leather jacket nearly ruined and hair sticking out of place, but none of those things mattered as he came out of the building, escorting a small group of people towards safety. roaming through the crowd, he was still trying to get everyone out of the burning bar. some were panicking, some were attempting to help him out, and as if it wasn’t enough, there were more downworlders approaching. he was restless, but the moment his eyes landed on her, he froze. lips parting, he was pulled from reality for a second before the gravity of the situation came crashing through again. it would be a lie to say he hadn’t missed her, or that his heart wasn’t pounding in his chest at the mere sight of her, but he didn’t have time to pay attention to his feelings in that moment ─ at least to any feeling other than anger. and oh, he was angry. ❝ your king set fire to my bar. ❞ enzo spoke through gritted teeth, a growl low in his throat.

She hadn’t registered anything else, the flames or the mess, her focus had been so completely set on seeing him again that she hadn’t checked that he was even okay before she spoke. Taking steps forward, she could sense his anger, her own bubbling low in her stomach somewhere next to the constant fire she felt when around him, but it didn’t matter as she got closer. Her fingers ran through his hair, taming it some as her other hand ran across his shoulder, nose wrinkling in annoyance that his jacket was so damaged in places she doubted it could be fixed with a simple patch like other snags. Kat almost laughed at his words, but it came as a tiny smile, her forehead resting against his as her mind calmed, he was still here, “Fuck my king, I’ll fix it myself if I have to.” She mumbled, her snark biting back at his growl despite the other feelings it brought, “you’re okay.”

Having picked up the late shift at Sepulchre’s, it was well into the night when one of her bosses walked through it’s doors. Bo paid her little mind for the most part, a conscious effort given the clear look of being lost in thought, though the Friday night rush kept her more than occupied. Still, as the bar began to lull, she felt – obligated, to at least check in, even if the empty glass the woman be nursing for at least a good hour or so was an obvious indication her mind was somewhere else. “You okay, boss? Want another drink or something?”

It felt like forever since she had set foot in her own place, at least on the public side of it, she had crashed out in her own bed in the apartment above the bar for a couple of nights but mostly Kat had tried to stay out of trouble. With everything that had happened, returning home and the attacks Leo had orchestrated, she needed a drink, and the only place she knew that her bad habit of finishing a tequila bottle off wouldn’t be judged was her own bar. She hadn’t even seen the other walk up before her voice snapped her out the daze, giving a tiny nod before looking at the glass and nodding with a little more conviction, “Just bring the bottle, rum, third shelf-yeah.” A smile grazed her lips as she saw Bo reach for it before she had finished, glad that at least she didn’t have to talk too much even to explain where her favorite bottle was, “I’m fine, just a lot going on, yknow?”

     “ no shit, sherlock. ” anna retorted, a short snort following afterwards. a hand then moved to wrap around her bump protectively – she had grown to be extra careful around the mermaid since a, there was word that she was close to leonard wallace and b, well, basically enzo. especially after the recent events. carefully eyeing the other, anna tilted her head to the side, wolf-like gestures still within her despite her lack of abilities because of the pregnancy. “ the thing is —- you’re here. ” she said finally. “ why ? ”

She wanted to smile, to say something about how happy she was for Anna, and Kat was happy for her really, but she knew this wasn’t some cute coffee catch up, there was a lot of history between them and even now the siren regretted her choices she knew that Anna wouldn’t forgive her so easily. The words felt like venom, digging at her skin before she could think of a suitable answer, though she was sure it wasn’t all that much of a secret where her alliance was held, “This is my home too, Anna. Not-” She looked up, eyes darkening with something, sadness maybe, “not here obviously, but this town is the closest to home I’ve ever got. Why are you here? You shouldn’t be here, niño lobo”

     coordinating the evacuation of the east wing of hotel dumort, adrian was out on the street, watching clueless mundanes walk by. they seemed to be unaffected by the whole thing, as if there was something separating them from theirs. but he had little time to pay mind to that when he saw the block of stone starting to slip from up there and withing the next second he was right next to the person who could have been the unsuspecting target of the accident, holding the rock up above their hands. “ careful. ”

She had tried to stay hidden, keep out of Adrians business, he had far more important things to do than worry about his little mermaid from the tank and yet she had to check in, make sure that he really was thriving as much as she had heard. The darkness was easy to hide in, or she had thought so, not expecting her steps forward to be interrupted by falling debris, “My savior.” Her words came out dry, a little more sarcastic than she had meant to but then how many times had she called him that despite knowing he could have done more than just kept her company all those years, “Is everyone safe?”

This was definitely one of her worst ideas since returning to town, but then most would say that visiting Leo before all others was the real bad idea and in the split moment when Kat looked up from the ground as she stood in front of the Hunters Moon, she might have actually agreed. Stunned for a moment, she just stared, watching as anyone nearby started to panic, but faces blurred into one after another until she saw the one that haunted her dreams. “Enzo...” Her breath caught in her throat, like it always would when she returned to him, eyes searching for injuries and then back to his with worry.

     “ ah, ” leo clicked his tongue, grin spreading across his lips. “ you know well that i happen to love this place too much to let it down to ruins … at least, not yet. ” the smirk on his face taking a darker tone for a second, he then straightened his posture, feeling better with her by his side now. he knew it was better for her to leave as he took over the institute and until the dust settled, but he had never been a fan of her departure. “ no open brawls – but yes to open bars, would it please you now ? ” offering an arm regardless, the demon-blooded shadowhunter tucked his other hand into his jacket pocket. “ i’ve got some surprises for you at the institute. ”

She enjoyed the way his eyes darkened, his smirk turned venomous even for a second and if Kat wasn’t so blinded by her loyalty to him after what he had done for her then perhaps it would have scared her, instead it only made the woman grin in hope for what their evening might bring. The subject of her being away would never be easy, she had left for many reasons, she had been too weak to fight, too scared to let love slip away again and yet she still managed to find a way to throw it all away and leave those she cared for most behind to fight among themselves. “Open bars always please me, you know that.”  Her smile grew as he mentioned surprises, raising a brow, “Haven’t you surprised the world enough for one century?” Teasing, Kat slid her arm through his and took a moment to admire how the power looked on him, rose tinted glasses or not, she would always think of Leo as a King.

     for a moment she dithers and then slides into a seat at the bar, taking the offered drink. hell, she needed it. raising it to her lips, she swallows down a mouthful of the bitter liquid. “why did you leave ??” the wolf raises a brow. whether kat will actually tell her remains to be seen but she has to ask. did the siren not agree with leo’s choices ?? or was it more for her own safety ?? 

If she was important to Leo, then Kat heard her out, that was how it always had been between them, even if the end result wasn’t always great. “There were some...difficult things to sort out.” She didn’t really dare mention Enzo, was he her ex? Her now? Kat didn’t know so how did she expect another to, especially a wolf. “You want the truth?” She could see the other already raising her brow again in wait, “I wasn’t strong enough to fight by his side, I would have been a weak link, and I know that no matter how mad at him you are, you don’t want him dead any more than I do.”

     with the dead risen, anna had been on edge, barely leaving home on such occasions like this when it was necessary. so when she turned a corner and immediately collided against someone, she hissed loudly, an arm instinctively being wrapped around her baby bump as she cursed. “ watch where you– ” cutting herself off as soon as she saw who it was, a surprised look appeared on her face. “ hey … ”

She hadn’t been careful enough, returning to town hadn’t been by any accident but Kat had already run into too many people who knew that she was exactly what was needed to get to Leo, and that made it dangerous to be out. The Siren couldn’t always help herself though, the draw of a walk out in the fresh air, a chance to see what the town had become in her absence, and it wasn’t until the familiar voice broke the spell of the evening that Kat even realised she had walked further than expected, right toward the Hunters Moon. “Shit..” She mumbled, eyes flicking to the obvious bump and back up to Annas eyes, “You’re here...”
