âI am the man in this situation even when you try to cut me down to size. My toes are manly.â Christian shot back. An air of normalcy wafted through the tight space of her room. The constant beeping of the machines had fallen on deaf ears in exchange to take in every raspy word that she uttered. Christian had been left in this void for weeks with nothing but silence to keep him company. His hand curled around hers, tightening itâs grasp to reminder that he was never going to leave. âI know and it makes you the toughest and purest of us all but we have to follow codes to prevent things like this. We could have lost you and all of those people at the same time. Where would we be then?â Christian knew the haste in his motions to pull her into his arms would fair out two ways: a snarky comment or a stray hit to his side. He didnât care. Maggie needed comfort and he needed her.Â
âIâll tell you everything I know.âÂ
âi just woke up, i donât want your damn toes to be the focus of the first conversation i have,â maggie tries to joke, but really -- toes are not exactly the thing she wants to focus on right now. in fact, her mind is already racing through the memories of that day that she still has access to. most if itâs a blur, she can remember tommy merlyn helping that man and firestorm flying in, but beyond that? itâs foggy, and thereâs nothing worse than having incomplete memories. all she has to go on right now are the words of others, and currently the only person within talking distance isnât exactly being open about those particular events. âprotocols and classroom theories go out of the window the second civilians are put in grave danger, you know this. iâve seen you throw yourself in the middle of things far too many times to count, and thatâs exactly what i did.â at least, thatâs what she thinks she did. she always puts civilians and their safety above her own. thereâs no shadow of a doubt that she almost got killed in the hopes that it would prevent the death of an innocent. being a fragile human has not and does not ever change that fact for maggie sawyer. âyouâd be in the same place you were before i even came onto the scene, christian,â she then states, immediately reverting back to downplaying her importance in anyoneâs existence. âthereâs --â her attempt of a new sentence is muffled by his shoulder as sheâs scooped into his arms and, for once, she doesnât stop him. âi hope you remember this,â she mutters into the fabric of his shirt. âitâs not gonna happen again.â after a pause, maggie uses what little strength she has to pull back from the hug so that she can see his face again. âjust tell me the truth, okay? even if -- even if itâs bad. am i still able to be a cop?â
