“What the”, the man exclaimed as a water balloon made contact with his temple, drenching not only him but the comic book he was holding. Eli squinted around trying to locate the owner of the balloon that had just connected with his scull, and it didn’t take long to spy the source. With two other children at his flanks, Andon, Eli’s nine year old nephew stood there a devilish smile playing at his lips. “No, no. no”,Eli said holding his hands out as he noticed the other children were armed. But before he could say another word he was hit with the remainder of colorful latex, an action that sent the boys into a giggle fit but also a run. “Hey you little shits”, he growled. “You know how hard it is to get water around here?!”
“Oh come on. Be nice,” came a voice behind him.
Sydney stepped forward, a cup of coffee in hand that she slowly nursed, hiding her grin behind the lip of the cup. She’d been watching the kids for the last few minutes from afar, happy that they’d found some form of entertainment. It was something that she felt was well needed. Since the world ended, so many things were different. People hardly had time to be people. Kids needed to be kids. Which was why she had smuggled in a near empty package of water balloons the last time she’d gone out to hunt for supplies. Give the kiddos something fun to do, even if just for a small moment.
She approached, stealing another sip of her drink as Rusty came bouncing up behind her, his worn, yellow ball in his mouth. “Mmm. You’re a little wet,” she said with a growing grin. “I’d offer you a napkin or somethin’, but yanno. Some stuff is a little hard to come by nowadays.”
