As of this Saturday (Dec. 21) I will be off of social media til February 1st. Partly because I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and having a difficult season, and partly because I’ll be away visiting family, and want to keep myself from being distracted by my phone.

Embarassing Story Time

So... I’m not Ukrainian. But I grew up thinking I was.

You see, my family (both immediate and extended) celebrated Ukrainian Christmas. We had huge gatherings with Ukrainian food, not just during Christmas, but during other times of the year as well.

When I first went to University, I met some “fellow” Ukrainian people, and I was so excited. They seemed confused, as my last name didn’t seem Ukrainian, but I assured them I was, and they believed me, and assumed it must be on my mothers side (my moms maiden name isn’t Ukrainian either). I was invited to a Christmas gathering one of them had, and they asked me to prepare a speech about my Ukrainian heritage and what it meant to grow up in Canada with it! “Totally” I said. “I just need to ask my mom a bit about our heritage”

So I called and asked my mom. “What? What do you mean ‘Ukrainian heritage’?” And I was like... “We’re Ukrainian”

“Why do you think we’re Ukrainian?”

I start feeling panicked “Um, because of celebrating Ukrainian Christmas? And all the Ukrainian food?”

My mom starts laughing. “Oh no, Sam. We’re German. We only celebrate Ukrainian Christmas because it’s after Boxing Day, and it’s cheaper to buy presents then”

I was 21 when I learned this
