What is the DexXL Project?

DexXL is short for what you’d call a “Living Origin Form Dex.” Let's break that down on behalf of the uninitiated:

Living: Every pokémon individually

Origin: must be caught from the earliest game you can find them in with a **personal OT (aka no trading)

Form: and every shape a pokémon can take must be accounted for. (eg. Alcremie has 64 possible forms. luckily, most mons have 0 - 1 additional forms)

Dex: Pokédex, index, whatever.

**It's a little more nuanced on occasion. Exceptions will be mentioned as they arise.

Every pokémon on this blog—including natures, personalities, and occasional anecdotes—all come from the actual pokémon in my collection!

I'm drawing my DexXL for three reasons:

the nature + personality combo is a built-in character creation opportunity, and as a writer I can't help myself.

all these Pokémon are just sitting here, I might as well do something with them.

decided to learn a new skill out of spite (certified Al Art hater).

General Stats: 1025 Pokémon; 96 Megas; 32 GMAX; 356 "other" forms (regionals, gender difs, misc. form differences) Total: 1509 Pokémon (fun fact: around 13% of all forms accounted for are Alcremie!) (Technically there's 355 "other" forms, but I've included an additional Shiny Spinda with a matching pattern as a bonus) Obtained: 1025/1025!!! (1507/1509 with forms)

Updated as needed!! I will likely never hit completion, as the chances of obtaining a LEGIT Dada Zarude or Pokéball Vivillon are slim to none. We'll see what happens. . .

#0420: Cherubi

Happy Pi Day tomorrow!! To celebrate. . . meet Pi!! Named because her design. . . well. . . you get the picture.

Fun fact: reciting digits of pi is my party trick. I can do around 100 from memory!!

Pi is Gentle and has “good endurance.” She looks like she has zero thoughts in her head—just a DVD logo bouncing along in there—but if you were to read her mind, instead of the sound of TV static, you might hear an incomprehensible string of numbers instead. . . perhaps that’s where all her endurance goes to, as she really only moves around to lounge around in patches of sun.

I love the doodle of Pi on a little walk lol. Would love to animate it one day. Originally doodled in pen on paper during a work meeting!

made this about a month in advance and didn’t think about posting it on pi day till I’d already finished it lol, hence the mini hiatus while I made some stuff to actually post.

#0928: Smoliv

Ok he’s ugly but his name is Giagiono! This is what I get for drawing an olive without a ref lmao.

Giaggi is Gentle and “thoroughly cunning,” which means he’s got a squishy outside, but much like a real olive, he’s got a mean little pit inside him that comes out at the WORST times. He’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse, you know?

#0753: Fomantis

Mable!! Named because her little collar of leaves reminded me of Mable from Gravity Falls and her turtlenecks, and I caught her while I still thought about the show regularly (2017). She is Naive and “impetuous and silly,” which fits perfect for her namesake. I did not plan that at all!!

(you know what else I didn't plan??? drawing Mable, now, today (the 10th) just as the GF finale reaches its TENTH ANNIVERSARY, almost to the day!! the show ended on the 15th. :o not about to ruin my posting schedule over it tho. also MAN I’m old.)

I LOVE THE LITTLE DOODLE AHHHHH SHE LOOKS SO CUTE :DDD no ref for the angle, but I feel it is a very Mable-esque pose. also I hate drawing the head nub lol

will have to draw her again at some point, but from behind, bc I just learned Fomantis has a lil nubby tail and I think that’s adorable lol and more folks should know.

#0856: Hatenna

This is Helga! She is Lonely and “capable of taking hits.” I think she’d like to travel on her own, using her magic fairy powers for good. Like a traveling cryptid!! She a cute lil witch.

#0293: Whismur

Meet Whims!! She is Timid and "takes plenty of siestas." When you're as anxious as Whims is, it's important to know when to take a break and chill for a minute.

I'm actually partial to Whismur and its line. I had an Exploud I used a lot in Gen 3 (you'll see him later) and I also became emotionally attached to Loudred in PMD. As for Whims, I just genuinely think she's a cutie (and in desperate need of some xanex lmao).

I'm clearly becoming a big fan of the scuffed little drawing that isn't the sugimori style lol. I like how expressive I can make it.

#0092: Gastly

K this is a guy with a name so nonsensical, I cannot even fathom what I was thinking in retrospect: Embrudjac the Gastly!! He is Impish, “alert to sounds,” and would MUCH rather haunt a house and scare some folks than battle anyone.

maybe its because I drew soft serve yesterday and he looked amazing, maybe it’s because I used weird brushes, but much like his namesake, Embrudjac looks kind of weird. Lowing opacity, however, helped a lot. I enjoyed changing background color on this one.

If nothing else, at least he’s not called Rick Gastly.

#0557: Dwebble

This is Soft-Serve!! Despite the name, he’s rock solid with an Adamant nature and “mischievous” personality. Given those traits, he might try and trick you into taking a munch outta his hard shell. . . which it looks like poor Walker just found out the hard way. Be wary!!

I unironically love Dwebble. I wish it wasnt such a bad pokemon in terms of usage because in terms of design, he’s the perfect little guy. Definitely one of my fave bugs, if not my #1 fave. I did him justice for sure and actually had fun lol. Tbh one of the best spreads I’ve done yet, if you’re generous enough to call this a spread.

#0702: Dedenne

Cheez-it!! He is Bashful and "likes to take siestas." He is a big fan of snack time!! This isn't actually my first pikaclone to be named Cheez-it–I had a raichu named the same during my first nuzlocke. I believe this little guy came first, however. While Cheez-it the Dedenne shares his name with others, he is unique because he just so happens to be about the size of a single-serving bag of his namesake (Cheez is 8in tall, bag of Cheez-its are 7.5in according to google). A coincidence, I swear.

#0173: Cleffa

First shiny!! Meet Eek, because when I found her I said "Eek!!" She is Hardy and "alert to sounds. . ." maybe things like the SHINY sound, perhaps?

She looks less like star and more like egg. I'm going more for speed right now so I can deal with content. I'll add shading later if I feel like it because she looks kinda naked without shadows lol

#0446: Munchlax

Meet Walker!! Named because I caught him in Quiet Cave on the PokéWalker last year. Walker is a Naughty lad and is "proud of his power." Given all the trouble it took, walking millions of steps (LITERALLY) over nearly 8 months in order to get him, I'd say both he and I are pretty proud of how strong we are.

I decided on this route (literally) because it's novel, sick as hell, and adheres to the spirit of the DexXL project–even though he technically violates the Origin clause. However, Quiet Cave is "located" in Sinnoh on Serebii, so if ya squint. . . he's totally fine dw about it.

I kind of accidentally journaled the entire adventure I went on to obtain Walker. When my art improves, I hope to turn it into another side blog–hopefully a comic–detailing some of what happened.

Fun fact: I used a book I got back in elementary school to draw the pose!! One of those scholastic book fair books. Here's the page below, I followed the instructions lol he looks ok.

#0136: Flareon

Meet Asucas! No idea where the name came from, and as far as I am aware, it means nothing. Since he comes from my playthrough of Pokémon Azul, however, my guess is I tried to spell “Azúcar” and just somehow botched it royally without fixing it. Asucas is Hardy and “takes plenty of siestas.”

I tried doing all the eeveelutions to release on Eevee day, and it just didn’t work. Out of all the ones I tried, however, Asucas looks the best. I LOVE how nice he’s sitting!! He looks like a cute plushie. He’s not a perfect loaf here, but I imagine he likes to “loaf around” wherever he goes and act like a (VERY HOT) personal heater.

Other notes:

This is the ONLY TIME SO FAR I’ve managed to make something look fluffy!!! Couldn’t tell ya why.

Flareon is probably my second fave eeveelution because of a nuzlocke I did with a Flareon named Bo. despite it being awful and also dying right before the finish line (ugh), I came to love it. I’m glad I could do the design justice.

#0133: Eevee

This is Heevee and Shevee!! I was pretty proud of those names ngl.

Both are bashful, but Sheevee is "capable of taking hits," Heevee is "likes to thrash about." Sheevee is like a fluffy shield for Heevee, who is more like a sword. Then, at the right moment, Sheevee will use her GMAX and unleash terror while Heevee supports. They LOVE double battles.

I changed Sheevee's design from something traditional to make her more floofy, reflecting her GMAX form. Never done something with this bone structure before and it was a good first try

#0151: Mew

Meet Maya!! She waves at u. Maya one of the few ‘mons where I had a character in mind, and THEN I caught her much later because of this challenge. That's part of why the art is so stylized at this time–this will not probably be the norm going forward lmao.

Maya likes to wreak havoc wherever she goes. Certified goofball with a minimal sense of self-preservation. She got the scars on her ear during the incident that drove her from her home. This event did NOT teach her to be cautious. Not shown is the Pichu form she takes when being a menace in public (the one thing the does to try and keep her self a little safe). trying not to make these so long by removing artist's notes and putting technical stuff under the cut instead:

I’ve thought of Maya as “Impish” and “Impetuous and Silly” since the beginning, but the Mew I ended up catching for my dex is “Relaxed” and “takes plenty of siestas.” Since Maya as a character has existed longer than the Maya in HOME, I’m willing to let it slide lol. Besides, I see a world where being a trickster and being relaxed can go hand-in-hand.

That's about all that needs to be known about Maya right now. I'm not confident enough to physically write–let alone publicly share–the self-indulgent AU I've been mentally drafting since I was like. . . maybe 8? maybe 12? lmao it's been so long I can hardly remember. Maya lives in THAT story, but for right now I leave the AU writing to the brave folks.
