I might make a new account and link it
In honor of Jenny Holzer’s birthday, we’ll be highlighting her work with us over the years.
Our first project with the artist was in 1982 for our “Messages to the Public” series in Times Square.
When hipsters, Starbucks, & bike lanes pop up in your hood.
Gentrification
Detroit
How is that inferior to 16 year-olds shooting each other
or selling crack outside the convenience store?
or harassing everyone who walks down the street for being in their “hood”?
Let be veryyyyyyyyy clear, 99.9999% of residents do not sell crack. Let’s talk about how crack and other drugs were brought into these neighborhoods to bring it down. Driving down property rates so that developers could buy properties for cheap & move in people like you at a higher cost . Let’s not mention that the MAJORITY of hipsters moving into these neighborhoods are DRUG USERS. & they harass you for being in their hood? The place where they grew up? The place you’re trying to change? And move them out of? Let me know when they burn crosses on your yard, or put in place laws that keep you out of these neighborhoods.
The first two comments are how racists justify gentrification. They imagine that black people in dilapidated areas are all just drug dealers and gang members so it doesn’t matter if they push people out of their homes and communities. Racists think it’s better to put money into building cupcake and bike shops than to invest money in these communities I see my beautiful Brooklyn overrun by spoiled racist white people who are comfortable being a part of gentrification for these very racist reasons. And it makes me sick to my stomach
Bey and Blue
what’s fucked up is when you read a book and the main heroine is like “I don’t care about boys. I’ve never wanted that sort of life… I don’t want to grow up and fall in love with a man or be married. I don’t think I ever will. And I don’t want to or need to.” and you’re like holy shit this is??? prime… ground… for some sapphic antics–
but then it turns out that really all she needed was A Special Guy in order to fall into blissful Special Heterosexual Love that is Different from Regular Heterosexual Love and it Changes Her Life

Painted wax model of the East Indian Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes khasiana), complete with a cut-away to reveal insect prey. In 1909, the Field began the art of fabricating botanical specimens for exhibits. The practice ended in 1968, but a great deal of those plants are still on display today. This species of pitcher plant is heavily endangered, and having such an accurate model will continue to be invaluable for our understanding of this carnivorous plant in the future.
