"i promise."

the words leave his lips like a prayer, eyes finding hers, unwavering and sure. the darkness hides so many things, but it doesn't hide the surety in kiho’s voice, doesn't hide the squeeze of his arm that tells her everything will be okay. the look in her eyes is addictive — the way her pupils are blown, how her eyebrows furrow so close to one another that she looks on the verge of crying if he doesn't tell her what she needs to hear. it feeds his curiosity about just how far he could push this: what letters in the mail about what she wore that day would do to her psyche, things inside her apartment left in blatantly incorrect locations, stones to her window, fake text messages to kiho warning himself to stay away from her if he knew what was good for him?

he can feel how her fist has moved to his shirt, grasping it in pure desperation in need of his proximity. this was the same girl that just a few years ago he'd only been able to share the proximity of from pre-sale ticket seats in the front row that she'd never taken notice of him in to transient bows in corporate hallways when the universe was kind enough to allow their schedules to overlap, even for just those few seconds.

but here she was now — defenseless to the fear that was caging her in, susceptible to succumbing to it at even the smallest things that didn't sit right with her. she would need to believe that everything kiho was doing was to protect her from the danger of the scary world that was inevitably out to get her — and he was. because she was the center of his universe, his goddess in all of her purest and most perfect forms — she could do no wrong in his eyes. and he could do no right, so he could rationalize to himself that he was exactly what she needed.

"of course i would," he murmurs, leaning down slightly to whisper it in her ear; she smells like ultraviolet and marbled cream and everything that is good in the world and wishes he could take her somewhere everlasting, somewhere where her career wouldn't matter, a place somewhere that doesn't demand her attention from anywhere else. somewhere he doesn't have to be like this.

her concern for him even when she’s in this state makes him chuckle, the warmth of his breath against the shell of her ear. "you don’t have to worry about me, ahra-yah," they've never discussed actually dropping honorifics before, but seizes the moment of her vulnerability to break that last sheet of ice separating them. "just consider me yours for the taking."

his fated mark is burning now, but feels so good — a sensation he didn’t expect would be felt so strongly, and also one that feels borderline euphoric — kiho wonders momentarily if ahra has felt this before with somebody else. wonders if she's ever bothered to learn his hex code like the way he learned hers half a decade ago.

it almost pulls him out of the moment and go off script, almost forgets the time — until the flash and accompanied sound of a smartphone's camera shutter reminds him of the time. exactly on time.

"hey," kiho barks to him, feigning surprise and immediately turns his back to the stranger, just as they'd discussed everything would play out from that moment forward: he'd start by shielding ahra as a way to protect her from getting any pictures taken; would tell her to go wait behind a few parked cars in the lot while he approached the 'sasaeng' about his photos and demand he delete them, raising his voice just loud enough for ahra to hear, but not assertive enough to cause an actual disturbance in the apartment complex. the ‘sasaeng’ would exchange a few words with kiho that were sent as an encrypted script to him beforehand — and while it was made to seem from afar that kiho was demanding pictures of ahra's apartment be deleted from their phone, kiho would pay him the rest of what he was owed outside his deposit in cash. the 'sasaeng' would then leave, and kiho would come back to ahra again, jaw clenched and hands balled into tight fists. he runs a hand through his hair, turning to look back over his shoulder again until the stranger had clearly left the lot.

"ahra-yah," he says, immediately falling back into step of the protector role he was in before the encounter. kiho looks at her with all of the attention in the world and puts his hands on her shoulders to steady her. he wants her to break. "ahra-yah," he repeats again like he’s supposed to. "hey. deep breath. i'm here. he's gone. i'm not going to let anybody hurt you. he's gone."

a practiced pause.

"ahra-yah?"

like  kiho,  the  resonance  almost  pulls  her  out  of  the  moment,  almost  pulls  her  from  the  obscurity  of  her  own  mind,  from  the  depths  of  paranoia,  intrusive  thoughts  and  the  fears  of  her  own  imagination.

for  a  fleeting  second,  she  welcomes  the  anchor,  embraces  what  the  man  walking  beside  her  has  to  offer,  as  selfish  as  it  seems  in  that  moment.  her  grip  on  his  shirt  tightens,  eyes  glossy,  grateful,  defenseless,  exposed,  heart  fluttering  as  he  says  her  name  with  such  familiarity  that  it  almost  seems  like  there  had  never  been  oceans  between  them  to  begin  with.  the  devil  on  her  shoulder  tells  her  she's  bothering  him,  that  she's  a  burden,  that  she's  pathetic  for  being  nearly  in  tears  over  something  like  this,  pathetic  for  clinging  to  him,  hoping  he  stays  with  her,  all  while  the  angel  easily  gives  into  kiho's  undertow  and  allows  herself  to  drift  away  with  his  reassurances,  his  soft  tone  and  the  way  he  gives  her  his  word.

she  believes  him,  and  her  mind  is  pulled  deep  down  from  the  unease  clawing  at  her  skin,  the  racing  of  her  own  pulse,  the  worry  creasing  itself  in  her  brows  and  the  tension  in  her  body  that  was  wound  so  tight  she  could  hardly  breathe,  wound  so  tight  it  could  snap.

and  snap  it  does,  once  the  moment  ends,  much  like  it  did  seconds  before  —  suddenly,  the  glow  of  the  undersea  turns  cold,  and  the  wave  of  reality  crashes  down  on  her  mercilessly,  stripping  her  bare  until  she's  left  with  nothing,  gasping  for  air  and  trembling  as  she's  hammered  by  unrelenting  surges.

her  body  reacts  before  her  mind  can  catch  up,  and  ahra  can  only  tremble  as  the  scene  unfolds  before  her  watering  eyes.  she  hears  the  familiar  shutter-sound  of  a  camera,  a  man  standing  a  few  feet  from  them,  the  bright,  white  flash  blowing  out  her  pupils  just  before  kiho  turns  to  shelter  her  from  it.  then,  he's  gone,  his  warmth  leaving  her,  the  cold  spring  night  suddenly  chilling  her  to  the  bone,  and  she  watches,  helpless,  shaking,  as  kiho  approaches  the  man,  the  bite  in  his  voice  muffled  into  echoes  that  seem  to  come  from  somewhere  beyond  her  reach.  she's  not  even  sure  how  her  feet  managed  to  carry  her  over  to  the  cars,  everything  feeling  so  far  away  all  at  once,  the  streetlights  bending  and  breaking  as  her  vision  spins,  desperate  to  focus  on  the  exchange  even  when  her  stomach  churns  so  violently  she  thinks  she  might  vomit  right  then  and  there.

the  panic  washes  over  her  in  heavy,  unforgiving  waves,  and  everything  flickers  past  her  at  once  —  the  man's  face,  the  photos  of  her  sitting  inside  her  living  room,  all  shots  of  her  vulnerable,  susceptible,  exposed,  with  nothing  between  her  and  the  man  besides  a  pane  of  glass.  she  thinks  of  him  hiding  away  in  her  utility  closet,  knowing  she  only  goes  in  there  every  so  often,  or  laying  flat  on  his  back  underneath  her  bed,  listening  to  the  mattress  creak  as  she  tosses  and  turns  during  sleep.  it  looks  like  kiho  is  pointing  at  something  then,  and  the  man  moves,  pulling  something  out  of  his  pocket.  ahra's  fear  kicks  into  overdrive  and  she  misses  that  it's  a  cellphone,  nearly  dry  heaving  as  her  mind  races  to  what  might  be  happening,  watching  as  kiho  takes  a  step  back,  completely  missing  the  currency  exchange.  all  she  can  do  is  pant,  thoughts  circling  over  and  over  and  over  again.  what  could  she  do?  how  could  she  help?  what  if  they  fought?  what  if  kiho  got  hurt?  what  if  this  man  had  a  knife?  what  if  he  was  going  to  stab  him?

the  exchange  comes  to  an  end,  the  man  retreating,  but  the  street  has  lost  it's  clarity,  swallowed  by  the  rush  of  blood  in  her  ears  and  the  violent  rhythm  of  her  pulse.  she  hears  kiho  say  her  name,  but  it  reaches  her  slowly,  warped  and  distant,  as  though  filtered  through  water  and  static.  it's  only  the  second  time  he  calls  out  to  her,  his  warmth  returning  as  he  puts  his  hands  on  her  shoulders,  does  she  break  the  surface  again,  chest  constricting  so  tight  that  the  only  thing  she  can  manage  out  is  a  choked  sob.

"k—kiho-yah,"  her  voice  breaks,  overcome  with  emotion,  overcome  with  the  reality  of  what's  happening  to  her,  overcome  by  the  idea  she  could  have  been  all  alone  tonight  and  could  have  had  to  face  this  man  in  the  shadows  with  nothing  and  no  one  to  protect  her.  she  grapples  with  the  fear  that  she  could  have  been  cornered  and  harassed  for  photos,  blackmailed,  injured,  taken  advantage  of  right  outside  the  apartment  and  discarded  like  trash  without  so  much  as  a  second  thought.  her  imagination  conjures  up  the  vision  of  being  bound  and  gagged  and  shoved  in  a  van,  clothes  ripped  to  shreds,  bruises  littering  her  skin,  never  to  be  seen  or  heard  from  again.

"kiho-yah,"  she  says  his  name  again,  heart  cracking,  the  last  bit  of  her  soul  in  this  moment  breaking  as  her  mind  plagues  her  with  unspeakable  images,  and  she  looks  up  at  him  as  tears  start  to  slide  down  her  cheeks.  the  devil  screams  at  her  that  this  is  all  her  fault,  that  she  deserves  this,  that  she's  caused  this,  and  now  she's  dragged  him  into  this  too.  her  heart  throbs,  painfully,  wedging  itself  between  her  ribs,  and  she's  overcome  with  the  guilt  of  kiho  being  in  danger  now  too  because  of  her.

"i—i'm...  you're..  he..  you.."  she  can't  make  the  words  out,  so  she  moves  forward  instead,  throwing  her  trembling  arms  around  him  and  pressing  her  face  to  his  chest,  desperate  to  feel  anchored  when  it  feels  like  she's  being  swept  away.  "p—please  don't  leave  me,"  is  all  she  can  manage  out  as  she  clings  to  him,  crying,  shivering,  pleading,  giving  into  all  of  her  most  nightmarish  fears  and  breaking  herself  open  right  in  front  of  him.  "please  don't  go."

the  life  of  an  idol  was  not  for  the  fainthearted,  and  though  she  had  no  prior  experience,  ahra  wasn't  naïve  to  the  fact  that  a  trainee  period  would  be  grueling.  she  knew  her  dreams  wouldn't  be  achieved  simply  because  she  wanted  them,  but  because  it  would  take  hard  work,  dedication,  and  most  of  all,  diligence.  still,  it  didn't  make  it  any  easier  —  it  didn't  make  things  less  demanding,  and  she  had  come  to  realize  that  the  next  few  months  (  or  perhaps,  years,  if  she  didn't  do  well  enough  )  would  bring  about  her  worst  fears,  push  her  beyond  her  limits  and  would  try  to  break  her  in  every  way  one  could  fathom.

she  knew  all  this,  prepared  herself  for  this,  convinced  herself  this  was  meant  for  her,  that  this  was  her  fate,  that  her  songs  would  reach  people,  that  she  could  do  this,  that  she  was  DESTINED  to  do  this,  but  was  she  just  lying  to  herself?

ahra  presses  the  back  of  her  palm  to  her  forehead,  trying  to  control  her  breathing,  and  looks  towards  the  other  girls  in  the  room.  all  of  them  seem  so  unbothered  by  the  intensity  of  the  choreography,  sitting  like  they  had  come  off  of  a  magazine  shoot,  dewy,  fresh,  looking  well-rested  despite  none  of  them  having  slept  properly  in  weeks.  something  tightens  in  ahra's  chest,  a  stone  sinking  into  her  ribcage  as  doubt  clouds  her  mind  —  could  she  really  do  this?  was  this  really  what  was  meant  for  her?  there  was  no  denying  the  talent  she  had  for  composing,  but  could  she  really  make  it  in  this  industry  like  she  had  tried  to  persuade  herself  she  could?

she's  halfway  through  another  spiral  before  a  water  bottle  suddenly  enters  her  line  of  sight  and  she  blinks,  eyes  snapping  up  to  see  a  familiar  face  leaning  over  her.

"ayla-ssi,"  she  says  in  greeting,  voice  a  little  hoarse  from  their  recent  routine,  a  small,  but  exhausted  smile  stretching  itself  across  her  features.  ahra  stands  up  straight,  reaching  out  to  take  the  water  bottle,  her  grin  blooming  into  something  akin  to  pure  gratitude.  "thank  you,"  she  says,  unscrewing  the  cap  to  take  a  sip.  it  feels  like  heaven  in  a  bottle,  and  she  looks  towards  her  savior  like  an  angel  had  handed  her  wings.  "i  hope  the  air  conditioner  gets  fixed  soon,"  she  adds  on  after  another  gulp,  eyes  bright,  hopeful,  a  stark  contrast  to  the  emotions  swirling  inside  her  ribcage.  "it  feels  like  we're  in  a  sauna."

this moment is built on a multitude of milliseconds — milliseconds spread out over the course of hundreds of days, thousands of hours, spanning, now, over half a decade. the world has spun on its axis enough to keep kiho just as lovesick today as he was back then; her beauty never fleeting from the second he'd been introduced to her on a whim in a poorly lit hallway by some staff member that just so happened to remember they were both new to 9lives and would never know the magnitude of what that introduction had done to shift the trajectory of kiho's future forever. it re-wired him instantaneously. turned him into a man who believed in god, but not the same god everyone else knew — his god was the woman before him, all neon purple silhouette and pearly shimmered cheeks introduced to him as ahn ahra.

he would never get her out of his head. he would chant her name like a hymn in church, desperate for her divinity to show itself in her purest form. and maybe, just after all, his prayers were answered. and maybe, too, he could become a god with her. or even better — he would become like god to her.

the six years between them had been built on the profound and meticulously manufactured bond created of kiho's own accord. because earlier times of only passive bows to each other in the hallway that evolved into something much greater — a night like tonight, when ahra is searching for that level of divine protection in his eyes and it's making his chest swell seeing her so nervous, reading every syllable her body language spells out to him after years of becoming fluent in just that — ahra herself — it enthralls him.

kiho doesn't falter. he's learned this: how to look at her with gentle eyes. she's so malleable in the way she never shatters when he looks for too long. she's the perfect height, perfect everything for him. he drowns himself in how she looks up to him like he holds all the answers to the universe and drapes an arm around her shoulders to pull her close.

it's the first time he's ever gotten to touch her like this.

"you're okay," it's not a lie, but it's certainly fabricated. he is protecting her, because that's how the story he's paid for will play out in the next few minutes: the shadowed figure that's been positioned to be 'caught' by the two of them taking photos of her apartment from the parking lot; the 'confrontation' kiho will have when he all but pays the man hired to do that exact job; the 'consoling' he'll give her after the man leaves and kiho tells her that he made sure he handled it and that it won't happen again. but it will, and it's nothing she needs to know or worry about.

he is the monster under her bed. the boogie man that doesn't hide in the shadows but stands tall in the early summer light. a mask so finely crafted that now it's permanently molded to his face, to his words, to his every calculated move that involves her. the gentle hand that'd rested on her shoulder finds its way to curl around her arm and pulls her in tighter, and his fated mark starts to feel hot around his pinky finger. something about the stinging feeling exhilarates him — the old kiho would've killed this man.

he smiles, then, one of those smiles that the rest of the world never gets to see, because it's reserved for her only. not because she's trying to lighten the mood, but because he's the only one in on the joke and she's even prettier when she's unnerved.

"i'll check every corner for you," he says with the utmost reassurance. he pauses, his expression shifting into something quietly intense. it isn't a predatory look, but one of absolute, exhausting devotion — the look of a man who believes he is the only thing keeping the world from tearing her apart. "but i don't like the idea of you being alone tonight. not with those thoughts in your head. i could stay," his voice drops to an intimate murmur then, playing into her fears that the world, everybody, could very well be listening. "i don't need to sleep. i need to do some editing on some of the stuff i've been working on anyway," he pulls out his phone to check the time as the two begin approaching the spot he'd instructed his hire to be — exactly 8:27, he made sure.

he pretends to make it about her. "could order us some delivery so that way you can stay in and get comfortable."

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃  𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐅𝐓𝐒  𝐓𝐎  𝐍𝐎𝐂𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄  𝐁𝐋𝐔𝐄,  like  the  ocean  just  after  sunset,  where  the  last  few  traces  of  gold  sink  beneath  the  surface,  turning  into  something  deeper,  something  heavier.  his  arm  wraps  around  her  frame,  pulling  her  in,  and  ahra  feels  herself  get  swept  up  in  the  current.  she  feels  herself  gasp  for  air  as  she  breaks  the  surface  one  last  time,  racing  thoughts  that  had  been  clawing  towards  the  light  suddenly  settling,  finding  herself  submerged,  surrounded,  like  her  body  was  suddenly  anchored  and  drifting  towards  the  ocean  floor.  there's  a  humming  underneath  her  skin,  centering  at  her  pinky  where  the  flesh  pulses  as  she  sinks  deeper  down.  it's  warm,  it's  glowing,  like  sunlight  filtering  through  water,  and  she  feels  her  breath  catch,  a  weightless  sensation  settling  her  stomach,  but  it's  gone  before  she  has  a  chance  to  name  it.

she  wishes,  selfishly,  hurriedly,  in  the  seconds  he  pulls  her  even  closer,  tucks  her  against  his  side  —  his  body  bathed  in  golden  light,  all  things  tall,  solid,  and  unwavering  —  that  the  sensation  would  linger  against  her  skin,  swallow  her  whole  and  pull  her  down  to  the  depths,  where  it  would  leave  no  room  for  insecurity,  for  dread,  for  the  apprehension  pricking  at  her  skin  at  the  thought  of  a  camera  shutter  sounding  as  she  stood  in  her  bedroom.

"you  promise?"  the  words  leave  her  lips  in  a  quiver,  eyes  searching  his,  vulnerable,  like  she's  aching  to  be  reassured,  aching  to  feel  safe  when  it  feels  like  she's  the  furthest  thing  from  it.  he  looks  at  her  with  low,  steady  heat,  like  he's  certain  that  nothing  will  happen  while  he's  with  her,  and  she  feels  fragile,  like  glass,  perhaps  from  the  first-time  resonance,  perhaps  from  being  touch-starved,  perhaps  from  feeling  like  she  has  no  choice  but  to  be  strong  when  all  she  wanted  to  do  was  hide  underneath  the  covers.  but  you  can't  hide  there,  can  you?  the  devil  chimes  in,  reminding  her  the  startling  truth  of  the  situation.  the  realization  has  the  carefully  curated  façade  cracking,  softly,  slowly,  spurred  on  by  the  warmth  of  his  smile  and  the  reassuring  words  leaving  his  lips.

the  trembling  arms  that  had  been  wrapped  around  herself  fall  to  her  sides,  her  one  fist  curving,  tethering  itself  in  the  material  of  his  shirt  like  he  was  the  anchor  keeping  her  steady  amongst  the  waves  of  fear  washing  over  her  —  her  mind  flits  to  the  idea  of  kiho  not  staying  with  her,  and  where  she  stands  alone  in  her  hallway,  listening  for  someone  else's  breathing,  looking  over  her  shoulder  every  time  she  walked  into  a  room.  she  could  lie,  could  insist  that  she  would  be  fine  on  her  own,  but  her  heart  lodges  itself  in  her  throat  at  the  idea  of  someone  looming  over  her  while  she  slept,  someone  crawling  into  bed  with  her  when  she  was  sleeping,  tucking  themselves  in  beside  her  frame  like  kiho  was  now,  camera  pressed  close  enough  to  her  face  that  they  would  be  able  to  capture  the  essence  of  her  most  vulnerable  moments.

"you'd  really  do  that?"  she  asks  gently,  mirroring  the  softness  of  his  voice,  the  notion  that  he's  whispering  making  her  eyes  flicker  around  them  for  the  briefest  of  seconds  before  returning  to  his  own.  "it  sounds  really  nice,"  she  admits,  soft,  sincere,  leaning  into  him  like  his  presence  is  the  only  thing  keeping  the  demons  at  bay.  "i  would  hate  for  you  to  not  sleep  though.  you've  been  working  so  hard,  you  need  some  rest  too,"  her  heart  flutters  again,  pinky  finger  pulsating  as  she  is  enveloped  by  kiho's  warmth,  the  angel  on  her  shoulder  reminding  her  he  is  safe,  he  is  secure,  and  he  is  the  person  with  whom  she  can  entrust  her  fragility  with.  something in her ribcage sings at the idea, something warm and hopeful, like she's understood in a way she doesn't need to explain. kiho has always had a way of making her feel like her guard can soften without consequence. "maybe  we  can  take  turns  being  on  watch?"  she tries to return to the light, because his  smile  is  contagious,  and  ahra  can't  help  but  return  it,  feeling  flightless,  feeling  like  she's  turning  towards  the  sun,  completely  unaware  of  the  dark  figure  lurking  in  the  shadows  just  up  ahead.

𝐓𝐇𝐄  𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃  𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃  𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌  𝐈𝐒  𝐃𝐈𝐌  𝐀𝐍𝐃  𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐄𝐃,  soft,  misty,  with  fresh  dewdrops  from  recent  spring  storms  clinging  to  the  hanging  dogwood  and  the  faint  hum  of  neon  store  signs  and  warm  streetlights  filling  the  night  air.  it's  late  enough  that  no  one  else  is  around,  but  the  city  still  feels  alive,  just  quieter,  more  peaceful,  which  is  both  comforting  and  unsettling.  there's  part  of  her  that  relishes  in  this  time  of  night  —  like  when  the  city  sleeps,  she  can  finally  breathe,  can  finally  be  ahn  ahra  and  not  just  𝘈𝘌𝘙𝘈  —  but  the  other  part  of  her  chides  her  for  being  so  selfish,  for  being  so  indolent,  for  wanting  to  rest  when  there  was  so  much  still  to  do.  something  heavy  settles  in  her  chest,  like  guilt  for  not  recording  until  dawn  breaks,  like  she  should  be  working  twice  as  hard  in  the  wake  of  her  solo  debut,  but  there's  something  else  there  too,  something  sharper  than  just  the  fear  of  failure.

tonight,  the  devil  that  whispers  in  her  ear  feels  a  little  more  weighted  on  on  her  shoulder,  but  it  is  a  bit  quieter  than  usual,  much  like  it  always  is  whenever  ahra  is  with  park  kiho.

"thank  you  for  walking  me  home,"  she  says  softly,  like  speaking  too  loud  might  break  the  calm,  might  invite  unwanted  attention  their  way.  ahra  instinctively  looks  over  her  shoulder,  and  it  dawns  on  her  that  the  sting  that  accompanied  the  weight  of  her  usual  guilt  was  something  close  to  unease.  nervousness.  or  rather,  fear,  if  she's  being  honest.  there's  no  one  there,  no  one  watching  them  head  towards  her  apartment,  but  she  steps  closer  to  kiho  anyway,  like  the  closer  she  is  to  him  the  less  real  her  current  situation  feels.  the  less  terrifying  the  reality  of  this  all  would  be.  after  all,  she's  safe  with  him.  she  knows  she  is,  because  kiho  has  proved  time  and  time  again  to  be  her  person,  her  stability,  her  consistency,  to  be  the  one  who  person  she  could  trust,  the  one  person  who  always  looked  out  for  her  in  a  world  that  often  tried  to  swallow  her  whole.

tonight  proved  that  as  much,  given  he  had  insisted  to  walk  her  home  after  she  was  done  with  her  recording  session,  something  that  made  the  heart  inside  her  ribcage  flutter.

"i'm  really  glad  you're  here,"  she  continues,  the  words  are  sincere,  genuine,  and  her  eyes  drift  from  the  emptiness  behind  them  to  where  he  walks  in  step  alongside  her.  he  is  the  only  person  she  feels  she  can  be  honest  with,  vulnerable  with,  and  her  fears  come  out  before  she  has  a  chance  to  stop  them.  "this  whole  thing  kind  of  has  me  on  edge,"  she  laughs,  perhaps  out  of  habit,  perhaps  as  a  way  of  making  it  seem  like  being  stalked  isn't  such  a  big  deal,  perhaps  trying  to  minimize  the  discomfort  clinging  to  her  skin,  but  it's  strained,  like  she  doesn't  even  believe  herself.  "it  feels  like  i  can't  really  trust  anyone,  you  know?"  she  thinks  back  to  the  lobby  where  one  of  the  new  staff  had  offered  to  give  her  a  ride  home  because  he  didn't  want  her  heading  home  alone  tonight.  it  seemed  innocent  enough  at  the  time,  but  something  about  their  words  just  didn't  feel  right.  she  had  smiled  all  the  same,  was  sweet  like  she  always  was,  thanking  them  for  their  concern  and  assuring  them  she  would  be  fine,  but  she  just  couldn't  shake  the  feeling  that  something  about  tonight  was  off.

"do  you  mind  checking  for  monsters  under  the  bed  before  you  go?"  she  tries  to  lighten  the  mood,  tries  not  to  picture  all  the  frightening  scenarios  swirling  around  in  her  mind  —  someone  rummaging  through  her  drawers,  touching  her  things,  pressing  her  clothes  to  their  nose  and  inhaling  her  scent.  she  swallows,  a  shudder  running  through  her  as  she  tries  to  chase  away  the  picture  of  the  new  staff  member  hiding  in  her  room,  flat  on  his  stomach  underneath  her  bed,  camera  in  hand,  sunken  eyes  focused  on  her  every  movement.  something  churns  in  her  stomach  at  the  idea  of  him  watching  her,  snapping  those  photos  as  she  spent  time  at  home,  washing  her  face,  changing  her  clothes,  sitting  at  her  vanity  to  apply  her  skincare,  doing  everything  she  did  when  she  thought  no  one  was  watching.

bile  rises  in  the  back  of  her  throat  and  ahra  inhales,  a  little  shakily,  wrapping  her  arms  around  herself  as  a  means  of  protecting  herself  as  the  two  of  them  wait  at  a  crosswalk  for  the  light  to  change.  how  could  she  let  something  like  this  happen?  how  could  she  have  been  so  carless  that  she  let  someone  close  enough  to  touch  without  noticing?  she  instinctively  takes  another  step  closer  to  kiho,  head  tilting  up  to  look  at  him,  eyes  a  little  glassy,  heart  lodging  itself  in  her  throat.  she  watches  his  features  glow  underneath  the  streetlights,  warmth  reflecting  off  of  his  cheekbones,  his  frame  towering  over  her  own,  like  a  guiding  light  in  the  darkness.  she  feels  so  exposed,  so  vulnerable,  so  terrified,  but  she  knows  she  can  feel  this  way  with  him, knows this is a safe space.

hello  𝘈𝘌𝘙𝘈,  thank  you  for  taking  the  time  to  chat  with  us  at  genius  korea!  can  you  start  us  off  with  a  quick  introduction?

✦  —  "connected  to  your  heart  .  .  .  hi,  it's  𝘈𝘌𝘙𝘈,  your  virtual  lover!  ♡"

congratulations  on  the  release  of  VIRTUAL  LOVER.  in  what  ways  do  you  think  this  EP  encapsulates  the  kind  of  artist  you  are  and  hope  to  be?

✦  —  "i  think  VIRTUAL  LOVER  is  the  most  honest  version  of  me.  for  a  long  time,  it  felt  like  i  was  stuck  somewhere  in  between  —  like  i  wasn't  the  person  i  used  to  be  anymore,  but  i  hadn't  fully  become  the  person  i  wanted  to  be  yet.  this  EP  kind  of  lives  in  that  feeling,  where  there's  loneliness,  confusion  and  a  lot  of  quiet  moments..  but  at  the  same  time,  there's  also  a  lot  of  curiosity,  softness  and  hope.  i  wanted  to  show  that  even  when  things  feel  uncertain  or  incomplete  that  there's  still  something  beautiful  in  that  process  of  becoming."

you  were  heavily  involved  in  producing  this  EP.  what  was  the  most  challenging  part  of  that  process?

✦  —  "being  honest  with  myself.  i  think  it's  easy  to  hide  behind  something  that  sounds  'good'  or  what  someone  might  expect,  but  when  you're  producing  your  own  music,  you  can't  really  do  that.  there  were  a  lot  of  moments  where  i  had  to  ask  myself,  'is  this  really  how  i  feel  or  is  this  just  what  sounds  nice?"  and  sometimes  it  was  hard  to  find  the  right  contrast  in  between  that."

fans  still  remember  your  work  with  BIRDS  OF  PARADISE  very  fondly.  how  do  you  feel  about  that  chapter  now?

✦  —  "i'm  really  grateful  for  it.  i  wouldn't  be  where  i  am  today  without  birds  of  paradise.  that  was  where  i  learned  how  to  express  myself  and  where  i  was  able  to  find  my  voice  for  the  first  time.  i'm  so  grateful  for  all  the  experiences  i've  had  from  being  with  the  girls  and  i'm  so  grateful  to  all  of  our  fans  for  supporting  me  during  this  debut."

the  final  track,  COSMIC  GIRL,  feels  almost  hopeful  compared  to  the  rest  of  the  EP.  was  that  intentional?

✦  —  "yes!  i  didn't  want  the  album  to  stay  in  one  place  emotionally,  so  that  track  is  sort  of  like…  how  i  felt  stepping  outside  of  everything  for  a  moment.  it  kind  of  feels  like  when  you're  looking  at  life  from  really  far  away  and  realizing  that  even  if  it  feels  like  you're  orbiting,  you  still  made  it  somewhere.  just  because  you're  in  one  place  doesn't  always  mean  you're  stuck."

what  do  you  hope  listeners  take  away  from  this  EP?

✦  —  "mostly  that  it's  okay  to  not  have  everything  figured  out.  that  even  in  that  weird  and  uncomfortable  in-between,  you're  still  moving  forward.  i  also  wanted  them  to  remember  that  even  when  you  feel  alone,  you're  still  connected  to  those  who  care  about  you  through  screens,  signals  and  things  that  aren't  always  fully  tangible."

as  we  wrap  up  this  interview,  do  you  have  anything  that  you'd  like  to  say  to  your  fans?
