The 5 real themes of good omens that the finale completely botched
I know we only had 1 episode and whole plotlines were scrapped but I was just left feeling so empty after the finale given how powerful and moving and profound the themes of season 1/the book were. So buckle up for a long ride let's talk about it
Theme 1: Human Incarnate
The book and the show established that humanity is unique because it is neither purely good or purely bad. From the book: "Most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally evil, but by people being fundamentally people." This Aziraphale describes as "much better" than either Heaven or Hell
This is one of my favorite sequences in the whole show. And the music is soaring and gorgeous. Adam recalls the things in his life he has come to know and love; his parents, his friends, his dog, his home. He makes it have nice weather all year. Aziraphale could feel that love at the Tadfield Manor. Heaven and Hell tried to create an instrument of destruction. But by putting that inside a human boy, they didn't realize the strength of one boy's love would be strong enough to literally burn the hell out of him. He told Satan himself to shove it and rewrote reality to have the dad he truly loved. The power of humanity's love is stronger than any immortal power could ever be.
This is the idea that would have been so cool for the finale but unfortunately never paid off. As the second coming prepares to destroy Earth again, Aziraphale and Crowley could have teamed up with the power of humanity to reshape heaven and hell for good. Adam and Jesus as the antichrist and christ born to end the world and instead used their humanity to save it. Instead we got the book-of-life arc and humans were literally left to dust
Theme 2: Free Will
Next good omens establishes that angels and demons are just puppets but humans are the ones with real free will because they have the ability to be good or bad. Even with heaven and hell, the humans on Earth always have a choice. In season 2, they agree on this, but Crowley's main grievance is the inequity of it all. Humans have free will but it still isn't fair.
God made angels and demons and humans but the humans never had to follow her 'plan.' Free will and the ability to recognize what is truly right outside the propaganda of good vs evil is what saves the world.
Humans always had free will, even if God was around to kill a bunch of them with floods or take their stuff to win bets or something. Creating a new universe without God wouldn't change that. They would still have free will, just less threats from above/below, I guess. What Crowley's established character really should have wanted here was to fix the inequity inherent in human society. That's what is truly holding them back, not a lack of will. Removing God from the universe doesn't actually solve the root problem here
Theme 3: Our Own Side
This is something Crowley learned very early and spends the whole show trying to teach Aziraphale. That good must be separated from heaven and bad must be separated from hell.
Heaven can do some truly appalling horrors and demons, at least Crowley (and somewhat Beelzebub I guess) have the potential to be kind. 'Their own side' is one where they have the freedom of humanity, to do what is truly right. Aziraphale and Crowley sort of found their way there in the finale, but it was all rushed and Aziraphale never really turned his back on heaven, it sort of just became irrelevant when everything started disappearing. What a beautifully flawed and nice world they could have created together
Theme 4: Love Conquers all
What was it all for? Love. God made Aziraphale and Crowley for each other because she liked to smile at the silliness of their love. The literal only constant in the entire universe. Their love for the world and each other saved it. I think the decision to turn Aziraphale and Crowley's queer love story into a tragedy was the biggest mistake of seasons 2/3. Forcing the soft and romantic comedy of good omens into a queer tragedy was the instant it all crashed and burned. Now everything is tainted leading up to the pain and destruction of it all and the whimsy and lightness is gone. There were moments of it, but it was all leading toward the end. And queer love deserves to not be a tragedy. We have far too much tragic queer love in our society. Yes we got the south downs, but Aziraphale and Crowley never got to experience that freedom. They finally came together just to instantly be destroyed. We deserve happy and fulfilling queer love that is sweet without the bitter parts. Good omens was intended to be a comedy, not a tragedy
And then this was SUCH A COOL IDEA they introduced. Perhaps the first time ever an angel and a demon performed a miracle together. The power of their love could create magic stronger than anything heaven or hell had ever seen. I was so excited to see the wonders they were going to create, they ways in which they could have rebuilt the world better using that love. If they had this kind of power doing a tiny miracle, what could they have accomplished if they really put their minds to it? God herself couldn't have stopped them. And instead, the finale literally revoked Crowley's magic for the entire episode. They sacrifice themselves for a new earth and people that didn’t even exist yet instead of using any of their power to change it. The god awful execution of this theme is probably the biggest letdown of the entire finale imo
Theme 5: Fix It, Don't Replace It
This is so obviously established in seasons 1/2 I cannot believe how badly they missed the mark with this one
Literally shows us the horror of replacing the Earth with all new people. Even children can recognize that just because something is broken, it doesn't mean you throw it away and start all over. They loved the world enough to want to save it. The world is inherently worth saving, flaws and all. If you love something, you don't abandon it. The ENTIRE PLOT of season 1 explores the horrors of humanity and yet humans, Aziraphale and Crowley do everything in their power to save it.
It absolutely blows my mind how directly this scene contradicts the entire message of the finale. Job didn't want new children, he quite liked the old ones. Aziraphale and Crowley didn't want the antichrist's new Earth, they quite liked the old one. We didn't want new human versions of Aziraphale and Crowley, we QUITE LIKED THE OLD ONES. Where the hell did that mentality go when they told God to create an entirely new universe????????????? Season 1 said the world is flawed but it deserves saving exactly as it is. Season 1 said an angel and a demon go off to the ritz together, exactly as they are. The finale said the world is too broken, we have to make it disappear and start over. The finale said Aziraphale and Crowley have too many issues/traumas to be happy, we have to destroy them and start over. That's why as cute as Asa and Anthony's love is, we quite liked them exactly as they were, angel/demon trauma + history and all. They deserved saving too.
Good omens has always been so special to me for how much it pokes fun at but also celebrates the messiness and wonder of humanity and love. The 6-to-1 episodes was a major setback but somehow the finale still managed to drop basically every one of its most endearing and powerful messages. What is the "real world" the finale is trying to make us value? One without a god to screw things up sometimes?? The best parts of humanity always shined through not even despite, but BECAUSE of the heavenly challenges they overcame. It's very clear good omens as a whole was always meant to be a one-season/one-book story. There was so much potential and missed opportunities and I wish we could have had the finale we were all dreaming of. I will always love the world of good omens season 1/the book, so that is the world I'll keep in my heart. And all the nightingales therein
So like.... we all agree he was Lucifer this whole time... right??
Also did anyone else feel like the hand kiss was a cop out??? Like yes- technically it ended on them getting theyre happy ending in one universe but... the only time they ever got to kiss like LITERALLY THE ONLY TIME IN THEYRE WHOLE EXISTANCE was out of heart break and desperation???? No goodbye kiss??? Only the "I forgive you" kiss??? REALLY????
my favorite phenomenon on tiktok is when all the comments will line up and start doing the same bit
Littles interacting with your partner is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand ya get cute interactions like her calling your partner "dad" and watchin him get her ice cream. Then on the other hand he'll be watching tiktok and next thing you know shes askin about some weird ass thing on his fyp...
Go ahead, make your OC the sibling/child/friend/whatever of an important canon character. Ship your OC with a canon character. Its fandom, its posts on social media/fanfic/fan art. Go for it, have fun, make up your own headcanons.
We're all just here to have fun.
10:00pm has no business being only half an hour after 9:30pm
And they say brunettes with dimples can’t stabilize the reactor core 😏
Uh Oh
I got a bad feeling about this
You and me both Rainbow Dash
i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
I. Love this.
Love it.
Oh my god
yes.
This is it, I found it, the funniest post on this entire godsforsaken website
I will never get over how brilliant this comic is. The artist could have just drawn a single image in response, but instead we have this masterpiece. The world doesn’t deserve @iguanamouth.
@musicaldaydreams
This has to make the @hellsite-hall-of-fame
By the void was that a twist 😆
Gay representation in this show:
A gay kid who spends the entire run of the show struggling with his gay identity and loving his best friend until the penultimate episode where he gets over it after being tortured psychologically. There's a hint he will eventually find happiness far from Hawkins, but even that is just a story his best friend is telling, so even that is up in the air.
A lesbian who has a hallway crush on someone she doesn't know, pines for a girl she thinks she can't have, gets together with her off screen, has one kissing scene with her, has a massive fight where she's accused of doing drugs before a literal monster attack proves her right, then they're never shown together again after a testy walkie talkie conversation, and she makes plans to move to Philadelphia with her three friends.
Dynamite job, Duffers.
Of all the things I expected to see today it was not the Bevin discourse to resurge in a discord server... I guess even Ben10 fans of this era of internet must go through that stage at some point
Reddit sucks, you can't even make a analysis about queerbaiting in a show without being told to touch grass and that your making queer people look bad while being thrown into a pit of toxic shipping wars you have no interest being in...
I just wanted to talk about queerbaiting man :/
Yknow what I'm not letting that analysis be wasted on Reddit. Here's my rant on the Byler queerbaiting and how it also caused Robin and Vicky to get thrown into the queerbaiting pot.
This season has had a lot of issues with tell dont show and it really affected both Robin and Will's arcs. Here's what we were shown in V1, V2 and S4:
• Robin is head over heels for Vicky and is terrified of being rejected, she thinks she lost her chance when she see's Vicky with her ex only for them to have a meet-cute while volunteering. Robin and Vicky are very clearly established to be over the moon with each other in V1 but they are having one issue and thats Robin trying to keep the crawls a secret and try and keep Vicky safe by not introducing her to the craziness of the upside down. They have a really sweet conversation once Vicky has her run in with the demodogs where Robin comforts and protects her, finally coming clean about the crawls and promising to keep her promise of a date.
• Will is crushing hard on Mike and pushing his feelings in conversations with him onto El because he cares more about his pseudo sister and best friends happiness over his own and hasn't come to terms with how he feels yet. Once meeting Robin and gaining her as a queer rolemodel he slowly starts thinking he could maybe gain the confidence to come out to Mike and confess, hoping for a chance to maybe date him. He gains his powers through self expectance and via the love and support he has from those he loves most (Joyce, Nathan, and Mike) and him and Mike are just as close as they were in S2 again.
Will's arc gets completely flipped once he first fights Vecna, Mike is no longer acting like a mature version of his S2 self in regards to his and Will's friendship and Will has been shown his worst fear about being gay so he outs himself, with no build up refers to Mike as "his Tammy" and in general has a touching but odd coming out scene. (I like the idea that Mike grabbed literally everyone due to thinking that Will was going to be talking about Vecna and the plan when Will meant everyone as in the main party itself and his brother) Everyone accepts him and we go into the final episode thinking things couldnt possibly be worse then that!
Suddenly Robin is dismissing Vicky's panic attacks while Max is being more supportive to her despite not knowing Vicky at all, Will and Mike are still barely talking and only have one small conversation about Mike feeling bad about not realizing Will was gay, being there for him and being supportive so he didn't have to come out the way he did apparently forgetting that even in S1 when Will was believed to be dead Mike literally beat up Will's bully for calling him slurs at the schools mini memorial.
In a interview we were told Mike realized during Will's speech that he was Will's crush. This was not conveyed during any moment in the episode or in the finale. Will not mentioning it directly with Mike leaves the painting subplot of S4 unresolved, we don't even get a moment between Will and Johnathan where their talk in S4 gets recontextualized now that Will's confirmed that he's gay (Johnathan had been the first to ever realize that Will was in love with Mike and that the painting speech was Will admitting that without directly saying it) and I don't think they even got a scene at all together after the coming out scene.
The real nail on the coffin was during the epilogue, Robin suddenly is referring to Vicky as her "overbearing significant other" (not even as her girlfriend) and they don't even get a scene together at all in the finale outside of the one walkie talkie scene. This was never how Robin was characterized in any part of the show since she was introduced, all she was left as in the epilogue was the girl who was "the overly emotional one" during the reunion at the station. Will didn't even get closure on his arc outside of Mike telling him he'll find acceptance wherever he ends up and pictures him finding a new love interest at a gay bar?? People had guessed we'd be seeing either a Korasami type of ending or even a Voltron ending (token gay guy ends up with a sudden end credits boyfriend as a "See! We did the bare minimum!" moment) but it was worse! We basically got the Voltron treatment with a splash of Destiel thrown in for good measure except Will didnt get banished to super hell he got sent to a California gay bar.
Outside of the show all we got was the Duffers throwing crumbs at their queer audience and telling them to "look at the subtext" and how "Will's an unreliable narrator" - Will cannot be a unreliable narrator if we NEVER see the other characters POV. They used interviews, music and visual subtext to leave just enough to get people to ship Byler and make so much content around it to generate hype, introduced a second queer character who gets the girl and uses said relationship to make parallels between Mike and Will in various ways, don't even get me started on the closet stuff with Mike (I saw that record for Mike you aren't slick with the bait Duffers). The coming out scene could have been wonderful if they had stuck the landing with actually giving a ending to Will's story and not butchering Robin's character. But no, we had to be double queerbaited in the span of two episodes.
Reddit sucks, you can't even make a analysis about queerbaiting in a show without being told to touch grass and that your making queer people look bad while being thrown into a pit of toxic shipping wars you have no interest being in...
I just wanted to talk about queerbaiting man :/
